So a few days ago i bought a 2nd hand 8800GTS to replace the 4850 i sold for cash a few month's back. (I dont PC game much and i just wanted to be able to play HD). Over the last few days, ive been playing games with my new card. 5 mins into a game, there is always a slight smell of burning. I just assume that the card is getting hot and its not a problem. (I monitor the temp and it sticks around 71). Skip forward now. I buy L4D2 today and max out the settings happily on 1920x1080. I have it overclocked a bit just for some more juice. I have headphones in, suddenly, the PC just cuts out. Im like wtf. Then, i smell it, worse than ever, and slightly smokey. I open the case, smoke pours out. I think, oh shit, new card fucked. But nope, i smell around, it is the PSU. It is baking hot too. The obvious reason why? It is a no name brand PSU. BE CAREFUL people, i was lucky to avoid a fire. Im PSU-less so i don't know if any of my components even still work. DONT use a brandless PSU, i always thought it would never happen to me but now im in a smoke filled room with a dead PC and no money to replace it. TL;DR: Computer went boom boom due to shatty PSU. So, who knows any reputable PSU brands?
ok and what do you want us to do about it
I have it overclocked a bit just for some more juice.
uhuh, you overclock, something that generates extra heat, and it is the PSU's fault.
Point is?
Thanks for the heads up chief.
Point is, anyone who has a no name PSU should be careful not to strain it for risk of fire/damage. Even though it is already known, just venting because im pissed for my 'loss'.
Your username is a lie...
Kind of deserve it for overclocking.
Funny is so funny he isnt funny.

The power supply just couldn't take the strain of the card any more and crapped out.
yeah it's not the new card you just installed second hand, it's the PSU that has lasted who knows how long. ...... something dosn't add up there
yeah it's not the new card you just installed second hand, it's the PSU that has lasted who knows how long. ...... something dosn't add up there
Im confused. I have a crappy, no name 450w PSU. I add in an energy sucking graphics card that put's too much strain on the PSU. PSU dies. What is complicated about that? Anyway, to make this topic useful. What are good reputable brands for PSU's apart from Corsair?
Just use your time machine, dipshit.
The best course of action would be to put some salmon on your CPU heatsink
You smelled burning and didn't suspect something could be wrong with your computer?
I just assumed the card smelled when it got hot. It wasn't that much of a smell, so i just assumed being the idiot i am.

So the thing that the lights plug into Baked and produced that electronic burning smell and the first thing I did the second I smelled it was hit the power switch on my surge protector for my PC. Luckily it was just the lights so no harm done. I've only had one PSU burn out... and it didn't explode or bake.. PC ran just fine, Cut it off, went to bed, got on the PC the next day, PC wouldn't power up, simple.

Phone, Ipod, Laptop, other family members computer, friend, school, library, etc, etc, etc...Just because your computer takes a shit doesn't mean there is absolutely no possible way to get on the internet.

I can't believe you thought it was normal to have a burning smell coming from your computer. You sure the PSU isn't just a piece of crap OEM that's like 250 watts? What brand it is shouldn't matter so long as it can put through enough power. Even the crappiest graphics cards out there normally require at least a 300 watt PSU. If you're going with a PSU that came directly from Dell, HP, or another company, it's going to be 350 watts tops (though normally it's 250 - 300). You can't run much of anything on a PSU that weak. Just get something basic like this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3255390&CatId=1077 Or if you need more raw power for a good price, get this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3255392&CatId=1079 I've been an idiot a few times and installed too much on an OEM PSU before. You usually smell burning because you're drawing more power through the PSU than it was designed to handle. Though if you really overdo it, it can explode rather quickly. It just depends on the quality of the PSU whether or not it will explode or just go out. If the caps are from Taiwan or something, they're gonna go out with a bang.
I had the same thing happen just no smoke it just died....
I changed my previous computer to the one I have right now when its PSU literally exploded with a big bang and flash and smoke and all. It was weird.
So, who knows any reputable PSU brands?
Corsair is a good brand Coolermaster is another good one. Also when you buy a psu, make sure to read the specifications to makesure the efficiency is atleast 80%. And next time you smell something burning, open up the case after you shut down your pc, and smell where the smell comes from.
that's not funny
It was a "A Brand Power" power supply. Rated 450w, but probably put out 250w. Yes i am an idiot, i assumed the smell was just the graphics card getting hot. I opened up the PSU, nothing visible is wrong, although Im not going to bother using it again. But the smell was definitely in there PSU when i opened it. It mayy be also that it had 20A on the 12v, is that a bit low for an 8800?
