The original was created in 1985, written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson. It was produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson, and performed by the Supergroup USA for Africa, which featured many prominent artists of the time. The song was written to advocate awareness about the African famine, and helped to shift political focus to the problems in the region.

We are the World 25 for Haiti was produced by Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and Haitian-born Wyclef Jean. It was created in response to the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti, that completely devastated the country and killed thousands of people. It was sung by Supergroup Artists for Haiti, including many singers that are popular today.
In your view, do you have an opinion of which is better in terms of how it sounds and is carried out? Both portray important messages of course, but there's been a big debate over "which is better" (better is an ambiguous term, but you know what I mean). I created a poll to answer this.
EDIT: I am a huge MJ fan, as well as a big fan of many of the 1985 version's artists, and I like the original exponentially more than the newer one.
The original has one of the greatest voices that ever lived. The new adds these drum sounds I just hate, they edited Michael's performance in a weird way... It just feels too much hip hop-y for me. So yeah, I have to go with the original.
Jamie Fucks
Too much auto tune in the newer one. 80's one had like.. actual singers 'n stuff. 'Nuff said.
there is simply more talent in the original
a lot more
Saw Kenny Rogers and thought it was the same dude as this:

But in my view on the videos the first was definatly better, I think putting Micheal Jackson in the second one wasn't a good thing to do, nor was it to show clips of the third world. I think what make the original so cool is that they look like they're all together the whole time where as 2nd they were filmed in different places all the time. It just was a bit overdone and they should of done it like the first.
1985 allaway! Any of you scrubs heard the live version?
New version is too breathy and has all that dumb wavey sustained voice. I mean, 3:14 is just a joke. What the heck is that supposed to be? a turkey?
The people in the original are still well known today. I don't think you'll be able to say that about the new group in 25 years time.
Excellent representation of what the music industry has turned into. Comparing the two is like night and day. This is my theory, the new We are the World was only used as an attempt to suck some money out of the Haiti situation and for some artists to get some recognition in the process.
Seeing all that Haiti footage and looking back at how badly that was handled by the Red Cross makes this version even more disgusting to me.
The only 4 people I recognize in the second one is Snoop dog, Justin Bieber, Brian Wilson, and Al Jardine. Only two I like is Al and Brian. The original, though, has a number of individuals who are still famous today.

I could name every singer in the first video. Didn't know most of them in the second.
Pink is a surprisingly good singer, though.
The only reason I know who Josh Groban is is because of this
