US Surgeon General- Teens Vaping is a Public Health Crisis
The U.S. surgeon general is calling e-cigarettes an emerging public health threat to the nation's youth.
In a report being released Thursday, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy acknowledged a need for more research into the health effects of "vaping," but said e-cigarettes aren't harmless and too many teens are using them.
"My concern is e-cigarettes have the potential to create a whole new generation of kids who are addicted to nicotine," Murthy told The Associated Press. "If that leads to the use of other tobacco-related products, then we are going to be moving backward instead of forward."
Battery-powered e-cigarettes turn liquid nicotine into an inhalable vapor without the harmful tar generated by regular cigarettes. Vaping was first pushed as safer for current smokers. There's no scientific consensus on the risks or advantages of vaping, including how it affects the likelihood of someone either picking up regular tobacco products or kicking the habit.
Federal figures show that last year, 16 percent of high school students reported at least some use of e-cigarettes — even some who say they've never smoked a conventional cigarette. While not all contain nicotine, Murthy's report says e-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco-related product among youth.
Nicotine is bad for a developing brain no matter how it's exposed, Murthy said.
"Your kids are not an experiment," he says in a public service announcement being released with the report.
Dr. Murthy will also be having a webcast today with a report e-cig use at what I believe to be 9:30 EDT.

fuck off, it's the same shit they've done the last hundred times. "think of the kids" they will get their hands on this shit no matter what.
So basically they're just assuming all e-cigs contain nicotine so anything related to them should be regulated
Call me paranoid but this seems like something the tobacco companies would push for

I don't think how they access and get these products is the issue. It is the how e-cigs are advertised and the perception behind them.

That don't make sense to me because a lot of tobacco companies have their own line of e-cigs.

Yes, but they want a slice of the massive number of ultimately unregulated vape shops that popped up more often than starbucks over the last 3 years.
Hell, my parents wanted to open one for a while. Its a huge market and its growing extremely fast.

Nicotine ecigs are basically non-existent here unless you make them yourself so I wasn't aware of that
It just makes sense to me that tobacco companies would try and market an alternative to their product as more dangerous than it is :v:
You can get juices with little to no nicotine
I mean yeah some juices have nicotine in them and yes it's easy to just ask for one with nicotine in it but they have nicotine free juices out there as stated. But calling it a crisis is a bit overboard imo. I mean yeah nicotine is bad but I'm sure there are a lot worse things these teens could be doing that have a worse impact than breathing in flavored water vapor
Question: Why on earth would you vape with a nicotine-free solution? I didn't know this was a thing.
EDIT:
Is it like teens buying energy drinks as a pretend-beer?
If theres no nicotene, what do you get out of vaping?
Taste? :v:
Second hand shit from this causes my asthma to get set off. People are idiots with these in public. The less people smoking them the better.

Taste, looking cool, oral fixation.
Are we seriously brushing off criticism of e-Cigs as some sort of conspiracy by big tobacco?
As in, a doctor that was literally nominated by POTUS and confirmed by the senate is somehow influenced by tobacco companies despite quoted saying that "e-cigs might revert us back to cigarette dependency", i.e clearly insinuating that tobacco addiction is bad, and that any step towards it is harmful and that we should consider the legitimacy and the rising widespread use of e-cigarettes as a potentially harmful precedent that could very well set us back in time.
People will consume it regardless and id 100% rather they were consuming it via ecigs over cigarettes. The idea you can eradicate something like this has shown over and over to be a complete failure, causing more harm than it prevents.
Taste, looking cool, oral fixation.
You really, really don't. There was a three-month period when it just came out where it was sort of exotic and neat looking, but now vaping is just a big ol' neon sign saying "This guy is a massive fucking twat!"

Almost everyone I know who vapes either doesn't use nicotine or they use the lowest amount sold. It's just a fashion thing at this point, and I know a lot of people are really into building their own and modding it.
If theres no nicotene, what do you get out of vaping?
Taste, oral fixation (I always fidget and bite pens when I'm bored / anxious) and just fun, I bought a cheap one and just fucked around with the clouds for hours, it's basically a hobby for some people who love customising and modding them

On the topic though, I'm all for the regulation of anything containing nicotine, restrict that to over 18s for sure
Just don't lump absolutely every vaping thing under it just because you can use nicotine in it, a lot of the reports lately seem to be really pushing the message that that's all they're used for
I'll admit as an ex-smoker vaping is fun, feels good, can taste good sometimes, but you look like a giant twat when doing it.
It doesn't help that vapes now come in the size of your fist, as in to say, "look at how big of a jackass I am!". The bigger your vape is the bigger a jackass people think you are.
long story short, It's a great way to ween you off the cigarettes, but if you were never a smoker in the first place, then you just come off as a pretentious fool.
The idea isn't to eradicate it, but rather call into question its completely unproven "harmless" effects and its staggering use among teenagers, as well as adults.
This isn't a call to "think of the children" by some outlandish ultra-religious group, but rather the Surgeon General, who is expressing his views about it gaining serious traction among young people. I'd rather not have people smoking e-cigs OR cigarettes. Especially believing that it's completely harmless while the very fundamentals of health is that any smoke inhaled into the lungs in bad for you no matter how "less bad" it is compared to more harmful substances.
My bad, I misunderstood you. Though what also must be addressed is the potentially unintended side effect of things like this, that is crippling the ecig industry. All the misinformation surrounding ecigs coupled with headlines like this, tobacco industry funded research and the general unwillingness of the public to properly read into such things means that real cigarettes remain unhurt by this new market. In my eyes, knowing that it is impossible to eradicate such a thing, ecigs becoming the main method of nicotine consumption would be a great success.

why eat normal gum when you can eat nicotine gum

don't you think this is taking it a little too far
why do we continually need the state to take the place of shitty parents? why not just let these kids make poor decisions and deal with the consequences?
why do we continually need the state to take the place of shitty parents? why not just let these kids make poor decisions and deal with the consequences?
Better to prevent it than it making us pay $$$$ for potential health issues.
why do we continually need the state to take the place of shitty parents? why not just let these kids make poor decisions and deal with the consequences?
Because "these kids" will grow up with severe health problems and that will put even further unnecessary stress on medical infrastructure. Fact is, it's something that can be avoided by passing on the knowledge of "don't be a stupid twat or you'll regret your actions later in life"
don't you think this is taking it a little too far
I'd say it's a fair assessment :v:

ah the problem with socialized medicine, sad!

so you see someone enjoying themselves, maybe vaping, you instantly get your panties in a bunch and begin to seethe with rage?
so you see someone enjoying themselves, maybe vaping, you instantly get your panties in a bunch and begin to seethe with rage?
I think the seething with rage is only because of the bunched up panties. Loosen that up and the attitude should stabilize.
Joking aside, that's not a realistic reaction. The realistic reaction is you look at them, see them huffing onto their oversize smoke machine like a badass chemical plant exhaust system, think to your self, "look at this twat" and then you go on about your day.
Thats generally the reaction. Seething with intense putrid hateful anger isn't necessarily in the same realm as forming an immediate opinion based on your perception of social behavior.
If there's no nicotine in it, then what the hell is the problem? Isn't it just harmless vapor at that point or is there some other harmful chemical in it or is breathing in so much vapor a hazard in itself?
