Ok, so I've been in a big documentary kick the last 2-3 months. I tend to put a movie on while I work so I figure I might as well learn something as well. I've watched a ton and I need more; so I thought I'd share a bunch I've watched and you guys could do the same. Here's a few of the ones I've watched recently, I'll start with movie related one as it seems fitting: This Film is Not Yet Rated This Film Is Not Yet Rated asks whether Hollywood movies and independent films are rated equally for comparable content; whether sexual content in gay-themed movies are given harsher ratings penalties than their heterosexual counterparts; whether it makes sense that extreme violence is given an R rating while sexuality is banished to the cutting room floor; whether Hollywood studios receive detailed directions as to how to change an NC-17 film into an R while independent film producers are left guessing; and finally, whether keeping the raters and the rating process secret leave the MPAA entirely unaccountable for its decisions. I'd highly recommend it. Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship and Videotape About the moral panic in england at low budget horror films. Taking in the explosion of home video, the erosion of civil liberties, the introduction of draconian censorship measures, hysterical press campaigns and the birth of many careers born in blood and videotape, it also reflects on the influence this peculiar era still exerts on us today. The Corporation probably the BEST documentary on how america got to the shitty place it is now. The Yes Men A group of prankster activists take on some of the biggest companies around. CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY I know a lot of people don't like Michael Moore but, I think this is a very good film and does a good job at outlining the Ills of how america's corporation have taken the power they have. I won't post any more Moore, but if you like this go check out Roger & Me and Bowling for Columbine. The first about the fall of the auto industry focusing on the town of Flint Michigan; the second is on the columbine shootings. Gunner Palace The film was an account of the complex realities of the situation in Iraq during 2003–2004 amidst the Iraqi insurgency not seen on the nightly news. Told first-hand by American troops stationed in the middle of Baghdad, Gunner Palace presents a portrait of a dangerous and chaotic war. Jesus Camp about a charismatic Christian summer camp, where children spend their summers learning and practicing their prophetic gifts and being taught that they can "take back America for Christ."[1] According to the distributor, it "doesn't come with any prepackaged point of view" and tries to be "an honest and impartial depiction of one faction of the evangelical Christian community". Many people have found it to be terrifying and are angered by the indoctrination and "lies" being told to children. People openly admit to "trying to catch em while they're young" and another says her methods were inspired by radicalism Muslim training camps. I've watched a lot more, but that should be a good starter. Also, Sorry if my selection is liberal biased I can tend to be a bit that way myself.
When it comes to Michael Moore, I just can't stand his movies. He focuses on showing how much the government is shit IN EACH OF HIS FILMS
When it comes to Michael Moore, I just can't stand his movies. To the one's I posted about; Capitalism a love story, that's kind of the point and purpose, to show the flaws in government that took us where we are. I don't see that issue in Roger & Me at all (his first film), nor in Bowling for Columbine.
Anything by Louis Theroux, the guy really gets a lot of gripping stuff. The one about West Bank was immensely interesting and obviously, he's done a few on Westboro.

(if they haven't already).
To add, Bowling for Columbine is a very good movie. I'd recommend anyone to watch it. (if they haven't already).
Good movie indeed, only that he actually talks about columbine there for about two minutes. The rest of the movie is only about gun control
Good movie indeed, only that he actually talks about columbine there for about two minutes. The rest of the movie is only about gun control
Somehow I think that's some sort of sweet irony. Technically the movie is about how to prevent stuff like Columbine to happen.
Good movie indeed, only that he actually talks about columbine there for about two minutes. The rest of the movie is only about gun control
Honestly I think that movie shows what we should have talked about afterword as you said: Gun Control. What did we talk about? doom and marilyn manson. I think the film is entirely appropriate.
Crumb is a very good portrait of the Father of Underground Comics, Robert Crumb. You don't really have to be a fan of comic books to watch this movie. This is a very good look at the relationship between the art and the artist.
Banking and Money: Money Masters - It gives an entire history of the banking system and money and it talks about the reoccurring issues. Money As Debt II - Many of the visuals are poor, but it gives great insight into how banks operate and much of the financial system. The American Dream - If you need something more engaging try this. There are a few questionable parts. Drugs: Super High Me - Watch the trailer. It is more entertaining than it is informational. Phychology: Stanford Prison Experiment - An test with unexpected results. Deals with the concept of anonymity and power.

Adam Curtis is a great documentary-maker, and I recommend "All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace", of which only the first bit of the first episode is available on youtube sadly: (watch this if you need any more reason to hate Ayn Rand)

All History channels shows like that from the 90's were awesome.

Truly one of the greatest documentaries of our time.
May i suggest Loius Theroux, he does an amazing documentary on Westboro Baptist Church:
Here's a good website to watch them at. Hopefully it hasn't been mentioned yet. If so, throw clocks at my ass. http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/

At a fucking soldiers funeral? Now I am not the biggest fan of the Iraq war, but I damn respect the soldiers there and that is not what they deserve in the slightest. They have basically brainwashed their children and condemned them to a life of hate. It's people like these that give such a bad name for religion in this day. If I ever saw these people in real life I would flip my shit. [editline]22nd November 2011[/editline] Reporter does a very good job though.
Anyone interested in learning about heavy metal music should watch "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" and "Global Metal"
