US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has named fiscal conservative Paul Ryan as his running mate in November's election.
Mr Ryan, 42, is a congressman for his home state of Wisconsin.
Ohio Senator Rob Portman and former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty had also been tipped to run with Mr Romney as vice-presidential candidate.
The BBC's North America Editor Mark Mardell says the decision is a bold and ideological choice.
Recent opinion polls suggest a close race between Mr Romney and President Barack Obama in November's poll, with Mr Obama tending to have a slight lead in most surveys.
Analysts say Mr Romney will be hoping to regain momentum in the campaign after a series of pro-Obama campaign advertisements attacking his record.
Mr Ryan is best-known for a controversial alternative budget which he produced to counter President Obama's plans in 2011 and 2012, known as the Path to Prosperity.
It proposed reducing taxes, pensions and food aid, and changing government-funded healthcare. Mr Ryan insisted the proposals would not harm lower-income groups, saying they would create jobs and reduce inefficiency.
Mr Ryan chairs the Budget committee in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, and is seen as likely to add electoral firepower on what are expected to be the key election issues - jobs, the economy and the budget deficit.
Analysts say that as a staunch conservative, he could counteract some scepticism about Mr Romney's political past as governor of the traditionally liberal state of Massachusetts.
In a little over two weeks' time, Mr Romney will be formally confirmed as candidate at the Republican Party convention in Tampa, Florida.
His bitter rival in the primaries, Rick Santorum, will be a speaker at the convention, it was announced earlier in the week.
Just when you thought this election could not be any more of a joke.
Yay! The conservative extremists have come to save us from the evil centrist president!

Romney isn't really even conservative though. He is for big government everywhere that isn't helping poor people.

This week.
Yeah shit who knows. With the growing progressive trend in this country he might flip back over halfway through his presidency (hypothetical: don't let this happen America) and start proposing sweeping changes to public health and education.
In between starting wars with Iran, Russia, and China of course.
I think a bowl of fruit would've been a better vp than Ryan.
Anyone remember Paul Ryan's bill to cut Planned Parenthood and other social programs?
Thanks for providing the national comedy tour of yours mr romney.
This really is probably one of the better choices Romney could have made. Ryan is popular among the GOP both in and outside of Washington, and will definitely help him on the campaign trail I think. Once in the whitehouse, the guy would be completely useless beyond destroying the budget though. In the end, Romney probably won't win, but I don't think this will hurt him as much as you guys think.

Until he opens his mouth.
I wish Colbert was still running.
Gonna be honest, both Obama and Mitt suck. Sad to say it's like we reached the bottom of the chip bag and its way past its exp. date.

And yet our current president (as far as I know) helped draft a bill requiring all citizens to purchase government-mandated health insurance.

Romney (like McCain) is behind in the polls and needs something to please his base who see him as a moderate.
Enter Paul Ryan, a conservative "superhero" thanks to that horrible budget of his. At the start this could rev up the base and give Romney a nice temp boost at the polls. However, like Palin as people start digging into his budget and his past it could ultimately backfire.
Nevertheless, like Palin we still don't know for sure how this will play out so the election could go any way at this point.

Romney did the same thing when he was govenor of Massachusetts.
I wish Romney would just stop.
Just.. please. Get the fuck out of here.

Why do people make every little thing a black and white issue. Is it the perfect solution with no problems whatsoever? No, nothing ever is. Did it help a lot of people get coverage when they otherwise couldn't? Yes.
Quit acting like so many other people and pretending everything has to be 100% good or bad. It's annoying, and shows that you don't actually think about things deeply enough to measure the merits or demerits.

A few hundred thousand times, this.

picking your poison since the first votes were placed
Oh look two white people running for the GOP again.
Aaaand Obama wins by doing absolutely nothing.

Honestly it was his plan all along. He joked that all he would have to do for his advertisements is run clips of republican verbatim.

The ACA doesn't really fix any of the core problems of our system, but puts a bandaid on it.
Then people are saying the bill is a fucking godsend. It's really incredible how people in the USA are so starved for healthcare reform that something as meaningless as the ACA can be viewed as reform.

Which plays back into my point that people treat everything as a 100% good or bad thing.
