Menasha parents upset over school’s transgender accommodation
"MENASHA – Menasha School district officials are hearing from some upset parents.
A transgender senior at Menasha High School, who school leaders say identifies as a female, has been allowed to put on a band uniform in the same area as female band students. The uniforms go over regular street clothes.
School officials wouldn’t go on camera, but the superintendent told me on the phone the district constantly makes accommodations for students without informing parents. Instead, only those who would be impacted are notified.
Schools officials refer to the transgender student as a she. They say the district made the accommodation because it takes the needs of all students into account and does not discriminate."
Good on the school. The parents getting upset over progress can shove it.
Well, if they were naked or something, I'd understand them, but this is really a place where acceptance is key. If they're just putting uniforms over their regular clothes, I don't see the problem.
Oh hey I once attended a Menasha school as a teenager. Never thought I'd see something from my neck of the woods.

... what's a Menasha High School? I mean, is it just a normal high school or is it, like, a group of high schools?

It's a normal high school. I attended one of Menasha's middle's schools. That was before I moved though. I did however try to attend Menasha high school but was denied because I wasn't in the district even though I had the right to choose my school.
Good on the school.
I like their response too. It's basically like "Wait... this is a problem?"
The parents are being too over-sensitive and quite discriminatory, the transgender kid is just there to learn, let her do it by presenting however she feels comfortable. She probably doesn't care about seeing other girls getting changed or any weird misconceptions people have about transgender individuals, she probably only cares that she's actually in a space which represents the gender she is.
Good on the school for standing their ground.
My guess is that parents are complaining about there being a boy in the girl's changing room without the context
I'm shocked there is a school for once that doesn't treat their students like idiots.

It's a city.
I bet the cocksuckers are going to try to pull their kids from school too, like the bastards did when they allowed blacks to go to school. The mindset of these people is more than enough to set the solar system ablaze.
Holy shit are they really bitching about putting on a band uniform near someone they consider to be the other gender?
At my school we put our uniforms on like 5 feet or less from eachother on a regular basis, most of the time having a conversation in the process.

You wouldn't believe how fast "protective" parents will try to crucify someone for a perceived injustice to their daughters, a guy I knew almost got expelled for like sexual harassment because like he was flirting with a girl she laughed, later told her mother then suddenly it snowballed into 15 mothers calling for him to be expelled
Thankfully the teacher that was there put a stop to it, but ya this whole notion that high schoolers are sexualy innocent and shouldn't be exposed to anything vaguely sexual or taught anything about sexuality is a very bad approach.
Also the knee jerk reaction to girls seeing penises is mildly halarious, if unfortunate
wow, Wisconsin parents getting riled up about absolutely nothing... what else is new.
I understand this since they're just putting clothes on over street clothes, but I'm not convinced that transgender people should change in the opposite changing room as their birth gender.

Why not? Changing rooms aren't distinguished by 'penis' and 'vagina', they're distinguished by 'men' and 'women'. Honestly, I think the whole idea is pretty ridiculous anyway, as anybody with half a brain can deal with looking at naked people without getting aroused (how do you think gay people manage?), but being surrounded by people who are biologically similar to you but a different gender is quite uncomfortable.

Personally I think unisex changing rooms would ultimately be a much better solution than just allowing transgender people to go in whichever room they want.
And no, I think it's about the penises and the vaginas for most people.
The superintendent says the student uses a unisex bathroom and does not use the girls locker room.
THE GIRL ISNT EVEN IN THE SAME GODDAMN ROOM WHAT IS THE PROBLEM HERE

Good in theory, but teenagers are still very hormonal and weird at that age, the best approach is just on a case by case basis following guidlines that don't discriminate, there has never been a case where people abuse the system, the fear about it being abused is completely missplaced

even if it is about that trans people aren't exactly waving around their biological parts. and atleast in a highschool changing room i can't see a reason you'd be taking off your underwear, so why not let trans students change where they want?

In your opinion where should transgender men and women who haven't had the operation/s yet go? for example a transwoman who has breasts, and is a woman in pretty much every way apart from genitalia should she be forced to use male changing rooms?

I'm not saying we should make all changing rooms unisex right now, I'm just saying that somewhere down the line it might end up being the solution. Or not.

Showering though? And why wouldn't you be taking off your underwear in high school?

I'd say it's best to have unisex changing rooms, because the main reason for gendered changing rooms and toilets is based on a cisnormative and heteronormative idea that attacks would only be between opposing members of the binary sexes. I think DFABs could probably deal with seeing urinals in their bathrooms, and I think DMABs can handle the odd sanitary pad wrapper on the floor- it's hardly any worse than piss being everywhere.
I'm aware that I'm using some words which are still fairly controversial, but if I didn't then this post would probably be twice as long.

As an additional question, in which bathroom should intersex people go? Whilst some do decide to align themselves with a single gender, some are technically neither biologically male nor female. Should they go in the 'penis' or 'vagina' room?
