Missouri defensive lineman Michael Sam hopes to be the NFL's first openly gay player.
In multiple interviews published Sunday night, Sam — a USA TODAY All-America pick last season and potential mid-round NFL draft pick in May — revealed he is gay.
"I just want to make sure I could tell my story the way I want to tell it," Sam told the New York Times. "I just want to own my truth."
Well there goes his handeggball career.

What does this have to do with the article?
What does this have to do with the article?
Umm Being gay puts him at a disadvantage to being picked.
Teams don't care what you do as long as you can throw/catch/run/defend the ball. I doubt it will change anything.

It's pretty obvious, some people can be prejudiced towards gay people, especially in the U.S.

Oh man I wish that was true, haha.

As bad as it is, I'm sure there are plenty of team owners who do care about something like this.
They let Michael Vick continue playing after he served jail time for dog fighting.
Aaron Hernandez was a murderer and he played until he was thrown in jail for life.

Professional football is full of legitimately bad people that are given multimillion dollar salaries because they win for their team. If Michael Sam is a good player no one will care if he is gay. Mark my words.
There goes his draft. He'll be lucky to get picked up in a late round or as a undrafted free agent. It's a shame, but that's just the way it is.
well now we know what team he plays for

Can people stop with this stupid "handegg" shit? It doesn't add any sort of credibility to what you're saying because its just a mocking term playing on naming conventions to try to somehow be edgy about how you don't care for sports or how you think its stupid.
The term is Football (for most Americans), and if you aren't, then its American Football

I'm guessing that being gay is seen as a worse sin than dogfighting to the NFL's main advertising demographic
Keep in mind that professional sports aren't about sports as much as they are about advertising
Jesus christ you guys are pessimistic. Toxx: If he goes undrafted or gets drafted in the 7th round, ban me until the next draft.

I wish there was an international term for American Football that wasn't such a mouthful compared to other sports names
AFootball? USAball?
I got nothing

Gridiron.
Umm Being gay puts him at a disadvantage to being picked.
depends on the team
seattle and san francisco probably won't give a shit, but i don't give him good odds on being picked by the Titans
depends on the team

I think even if he did get gaybashed all over in tennessee it still would be a massive improvement for him
but anyway, it's been known for years that there have been gay NFL players in locker rooms, just not openly. so the only people this would affect would be the owners and management.

your sexual orientation is far worse to the eyes of GM's and executives in the nfl then any of these things. there's a reason he's the first to ever come out. besides there are loads of murderers in the nfl that currently play and have played. one even has a very successful broadcasting career now as well
I think this INCREASES his chances to be drafted. Not in the first round of course. But if teams might have passed on him before, in the middle rounds, now they won't. The league will make sure some team picks him.
Whether or not he makes the team, that is if he's still on the roster when the season starts, is another question.
edit: This gets him an edge is what I'm saying. The league wants to be seen as progressive, even if it's not, and he has given them a chance to be 'tolerant' by simply drafting him.

And as a gay guy he is especially good with handling balls. Huehue.
I read the title as 'NFL prospect Microsoft Sam announces he is Gay.'

The heismen trophy winner raped a girl and Florida dropped the charges because 1. the girl filed it too late and 2. they wanted to keep their heismen prospect.

He's an all american player in the top college division. Hes pretty fucking good :v:

Tell that to Tim Tebow

compared to most people, of course, obviously, just saying that all NFL players are pretty fucking good but only a handful become household names who would be a substantial loss for the team.
Ray Lewis killed someone too, he's a super bowl winner now though.
It definitely gives him an edge, leveraging his sexuality. If no one picks him then he can just say "it's because I'm gay!", not because he might not be good enough (not that I know how good or bad a player he is) and raise a big stink about it. I think it's a very smart move but I don't know if it will be feasible for long as the US seems to be trending towards tolerance of homosexuality more and more these days despite whatever the headlines say.
