Yahoo reveals it was hit by worst hack ever in 2013; 1 billion accounts affected
More than 1 billion Yahoo user accounts — including phone numbers, birthdates, and security questions — may have been stolen by hackers during an attack that took place in August 2013, the company revealed on Wednesday.
The announcement of what could represent the largest hack of all time is a separate incident than the one Yahoo disclosed back in September. In that hack, Yahoo said that at least 500 million user accounts were compromised.
"The company has not been able to identify the intrusion associated with this theft," Yahoo said on Wednesday about the new incident.
News of the breach sent Yahoo shares sliding about 2.5% in after-hours trading on Wednesday.
The revelation of the hack could have implications for the $4.8 billion sale of Yahoo to Verizon, which has yet to close. Yahoo disclosed the previous hack to Verizon only after agreeing to the deal, and Verizon has since said that it considers the hack a material event that could affect the terms and price of the acquisition.
"As we’ve said all along, we will evaluate the situation as Yahoo continues its investigation," Verizon told CNBC on Wednesday, regarding the latest hack.
It's not deja vu

It should be illegal to withhold disclosure on hacks like this, regardless of circumstances. Just own the fuck up and let people secure their details before it's too late.

So you keep it a secret for three years? :ok:
Tell me why I continue to use Yahoo.
give compensation for hiding this behind my back
twice.
i feel like i hear this every year
stop using yahoo
Bah, Transfer from Yahoo to gmail is going to be a pain.
Also, I already changed my password several times after this so called attack anyways. So Yahoo is just dumb about it all.
Sadly i have my yahoo linked to very old accounts and such so i can't really ditch it, they really need to encrypt their shit better how does gmail even do it.....
Looks like I'll have to resume migrating to Gmail-only.
I really wish I could get a list of all the accounts that I'll lose access to by shutting down the Yahoo address I've used since fucking 2003.

you can actually connect your yahoo to your gmail so all your yahoo emails get sent to gmail and any email you reply to that comes from yahoo gets sent from your yahoo acct
problem is yahoo has a massive shitfit when you do that and demands you to turn it off for security reasons every time you open yahoo mail site unless you say "no i understand the risks"

That's pretty fucking ironic.
:snip:
Thanks a lot Marissa Mayer, fucking hack.
I've changed my password at least 4 times in the past half year, I'm good right?
Tell me why I continue to use Yahoo.
I dunno, nobody else does.
[editline]a[/editline]
Except for if they're using tumblr
shit I don't even know my yahoo passwords, how can I look it up
shit I don't even know my yahoo passwords, how can I look it up
I'm sure its floating around the internet somewhere. :v:
Tell me why I continue to use Yahoo.
Because like me some important websites don't let you change your email. Which forces you to still use them.
i think the most surprising fact about this is that yahoo has one billion accounts
Hahaha, I already deleted my yahoo account months ago you fuckheads
yahoo needs to actually die out.

I'm legit amazed some FP users still use yahoo too as their main

I remember getting an email about someone logging into my account in o13
thankfully I never used ymail for anything and never would have
I am so glad I stopped using Yahoo a long time ago.
The worst thing about this situation, in my opinion, is the fact that this breach wasn't revealed till now, which means that many of us had our private information stolen without even knowing it.
I have an old yahoo email with some private info in it. :(
Just going to take this opportunity to shill:
1: https://haveibeenpwned.com/ - Great service for figuring out when to change your passwords, and they can optionally email you if they find more.
2: https://privacy.com/ - Just went from invite-only to open for use, this makes buying things online actually safe. Seriously you have no excuse not to use this.
You know I knew Yahoo was complete ass but this really takes the cake, why even wait 3 years? I feel like that just makes things worse, but then again they didn't have much of a problem waiting 2 so I don't know what I expected
august 2013 came before months ago
Yahoo mail has been pretty trash for a lot longer than that.
Seriously you have no excuse not to use this.
It's only available in the US - is that a good enough excuse?
Yahoo mail has been pretty trash for a lot longer than that.
They deleted my primary account without notifying me after it received a huge burst of spam.
That was like in 2006 or something, since then I've cared less about them
[editline]15th December 2016[/editline]
Their coolest thing was their yahoo messenger, this was back in the day when web clients for things like that had to be flash based, and how it IIRC let you send SMSes too.
but they went and ruined that as well so

Sadly yes :(
I've been using Protonmail; it is very private and secure.

It was developed by CERN and MIT scientists!
You can read more about their security here:
