stupid judge and there stupid laws - google should make there own planet and we could all live there happily
I dont see what the big deal is. The FBI is conducting an investigation. Unless you use your Google account to fund terrorism or bomb-making, you have absolutely nothing to be scared or paranoid of.

Listen my forefathers died for my right to fund terrorism and make bombs online, no acronym can take that away from me.

Just because you don't have anything illegal on your email doesn't mean you don't have anything embarrassing or private that you don't want anybody to see.
I don't think the FBI is going to go posting the contents of your email to the public.

The government isnt looking for your affair letters.
If you're paranoid about google saving all your search data, try ixquick.com. Most private search engine in the world.

Trouble is, once the definition of something like 'terrorism' wanders far enough, you'll find yourself using doublethink whenever you compose an email.

This, uh, seems pretty narrow to me.

Does modesty also provide you immunity to normal investigations?

Agreed.
Its not like the FBI randomly picks emails and sends out letters to request access. They had to have some reason to suspect something was/is going on.
Its a bit like house warrents if you ask me, and people dont complain about those.
If the police/FBI wants to search a house, they have to call a judge and have a good reason to search it. Then its up to the judge to decide if the reason is good enough or not.

Uhh the problem is that this is unconstitutional, and it allows the FBI to take information without a warrant.
Amendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Agreed.

Except it's more like the FBI getting the right to put up cameras in your house that they watch forever. It's not like it's just going to be a one-time look-see into your email.
I missed the part in the four sentence HuffPo article where the FBI was just asking for access to every single account do they could just read emails at random looking for crimes.

FBI should be able to shove a camera up your ass to look for weapons of mass destruction, unless you have anything illegal in there you have nothing to fear.
Will this fuck over candian user's as well.?
Uhh, this isn't anywhere near the first time this has happened.

This happens all the time.

This is what a National Security Letter is, unless something has dramatically changed, the FBI still can't access your emails.

Maybe not necessarily NSLs, but government agencies request user data from Google all the time
guilty until proven innocent
Uh that's kind of not a relevant statement to make, they are looking through emails to actually adhere to the opposite of your adage there. They are using this as a form of evidence gathering so they can make a case against the person, this is no different than regular court proceedings such as warrants to search a home, this is just a different way of getting information.
According to Google's own stats, government agencies have submitted over 16,000 requests for user data, or about 30,500 user accounts, in 2012 alone.

I assure you no one gives a shit what you email about unless you are supporting terrorism. What use do you think they'd even have with reading random people's emails? Lol...paranoia transcending logic.
Even in the article, there is no specific mention of the FBI looking through your emails, the most they can do is get your name, address, and length of using Google's services with NSLs
If the population has to be transparent about their privacy, then the government itself should be transparent too.

"COP."
Do you happen to work for the FBI?
This is on par with a search warrant to look around your house. It isn't gonna happen unless there's a reason to suspect you, and you aren't guilty of anything unless it's what they were searching for when they entered.
The UK government are attempting (and failing!) to pass a bill that would allow the police to monitor internet activity without a warrant - that's far worse.

Damn someone already made that analogy
