• A Bedazzled Drone Replica Asks Us To Ponder Deadly Strikes At Home
    28 replies, posted
An 18-foot rhinestone-covered Predator drone replica, in all its glittering glory, was unveiled today as part of a new art exhibit at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. "Home Drone" wants to push its audience to think about the consequences of deadly drone strikes -- not in far-flung regions of the world, but at home, in places like Massachusetts. Heather Layton, the artist, hopes to foster a greater cultural understanding between the U.S. and Pakistan. Maybe the US should start bedazzling all their drones like this. A bit of morale for the people being bombed. "JAMAL GET OUT OF THERE" "but it's so pretty!"
But I dont want to :(
Why is it covered in rhimestones, though?
Why is it covered in rhimestones, though?
Because art
Why is it covered in rhimestones, though?
Why isn't everything covered in rhimestones?
Should have had a rhinestone bomb coming out of it, optional rhinestone cowboy not included
Why isn't everything covered in rhimestones?
In the future, everything is rhimestone.
Why are you calling them rhimestones?
I don't understand how rhinestones are meant to convey, "Think of it being here!" It doesn't target any form of empathy aside from being shiny. I mean fuck, why not show overall destruction, or have someone from Pakistan(paramedics?) talk about the second tap policy and how it kills innocent emergency workers. So many things can be done to prove the point they are trying to make, but being ~artsy~ won't totally convey it.
That's a terrible replica, looks like it came out of some preschool art class.
Should have been made out of shrapnel, really.
They should've taken a rifle, and shaped/coloured the fittings to make it look like a Predator, then had it pointed towards a dummy dressed like a foreign emergency worker.
I thought the "home-drones" were basically planes with cameras?
I thought the "home-drones" were basically planes with cameras?
More like RC helicopters.
We don't need art to ponder it, within the next few years we'll be pondering it every time we walk outside and see Predators with panoramic cameras recording everyone, everywhere, all the time.

The technology will proliferate and get much cheaper within the next five to ten years. They will become cheap enough to operate that it will be feasible and affordable to simply keep a constant rotating watch of drones over the larger cities, followed by the smaller cities. Storage will keep getting cheaper, too, so everything they record will be archived in case anyone wants to retroactively look up what people were doing on a given day. This isn't some crazy bullshit coming from Infowars, anyone could see this is clearly coming down the road as fast as the legal framework can be drafted and approved. It's not a Democrat or Republican thing; the ONLY thing both sides agree on anymore is feeding our civil liberties through the shredder. By the time I'm 40 we'll have high altitude drones on constant patrol recording panoramic gigapixel footage of everything, and smaller drones keeping watching on protests, hunting speeders, or using FLIR to look for grow operations. Literally nobody is doing anything to stop it, and every law enforcement interest from the FBI and DEA to your local police department is clamoring for drones of their own. All of this is horrible enough WITHOUT a shady legal justification for using them to shoot missiles at people. I do wonder, if the LAPD had access to the same equipment as the military, would they have bothered setting fire to Dorner's cabin? Or would they simply push a button and shoot a Hellfire at it?
In the future, everything is rhimestone.
Chrome rhinestones

Dorner didn't even die in LA much less anywhere near it. Or are your geography skills leading you to believe that Big Bear=LA. If you truly believe that's the case then so is some of Mexico seeing how it actually takes less time to get there from LA then to there. Also you're insane if you don't believe domestic drones will help things. Police forces are severely understaffed in some areas and are too stretched out in others. If someone were to give Alaska a bunch of drones for example, it would REALLY help people out. But no, you believe they're all going to be equipped with ultra thermal imaging heatseeking anti-personnel constitution killers instead.

I get the feeling that whoever took those pictures doesn't know which direction the real thing flies. Like, "Oh yeah, a propeller, that must be the front. Because, I mean, biplanes had their shit like that, right?"
Jamal? Are these drone strikes taking place in Compton?
Jamal is an Egyptian name as far as I know.
I don't understand how rhinestones are meant to convey, "Think of it being here!" fabulous

Guess what, as long as it occurs out in public, they have every right to use them to patrol the streets. There is nothing wrong with it. Cops already keep an eye on protests already, along with speed cameras for speeders, and they already use helicopters with FLIR. If it frees up cops to keep patrolling the streets why shouldn't we be doing this?
