[release] Workers in the City of London will soon find their journeys punctuated by recycling bins that will display the latest news from the world of finance. The Renew bins, which have been in the pipeline for several years, will deliver content via screens found on both its sides. It is hoped that the units will reach out to the half a million City workers who commute to and from the Square Mile every day. Over the course of their 21-year contracts they will cost Renew £500,000 each. The company is backed by private investment from City workers and entrepreneurs. 'Those supplying content so far include the London stock exchange and The Economist. It would be nice to have a sponsor, like Barclays with the Boris bikes, but it's not critical. 'It's taken at least five years to get to this point and we're delighted to finally get them out on the streets.' Various contributors: Content will be provided by The Economist and the London Stock Exhchange among other outlets And the British-born project is already spreading around the globe with New York, Tokyo and Singapore's financial districts potentially taking on the concept. Mr Hepburn explained: 'The city of New York has agreed to have a test pod in Lower Manhattan outside their stock exchange, so you could say that's in the evaluation phase. We're also in talks with Tokyo transport and Singapore too for similar set ups.' He added: 'Another point is, we've been told that during rush hour it's sometimes difficult to get internet at stations like Waterloo because of the huge volume of smart phones in use. Renew transmits between 6am and 23.59pm each market day and includes breaking financial and corporate news, general news headlines and weather updates interspersed with information about sport, fashion, travel, the arts and entertainment. The company's editorial team follows events and breaking news as and when it happens, generating information relevant to the City's professionals. Information published on the screens is set to be scheduled according to the location and time of day. And, in the event of a major transport disruption or a civil emergency, instant messaging capabilities will deliver updates direct from the emergency services across the entire Renew network, ensuring maximum public awareness. Pods will be placed in Cannon Street, Fenchurch Street, Moorgate and many other locations across the City. Great idea in my opinion but I can just see assholes attempting to break the screens and fucking soccer moms complaining about all the wifi giving them cancer
And then someone vandalizes them
Costing £30,000 to build and install
It's not worth it if it costs £30,000. That's just way too expensive for something like that.
It's not worth it if it costs £30,000. That's just way to expensive for something like that.
Don't worry, they'll only be around for the Olympics and then when all the tourists are gone they'll vanish
Great idea in my opinion but I can just see assholes attempting to break the screens and fucking soccer moms complaining about all the wifi giving them cancer
Nonsense they don't give you cancer. Only Hepatitis.
Way to style up junk with unnecessary bling-bling.
and then they puke in it
We all know people are going to steal them
But what is the bloody point?
What a waste of energy, this is awful
"Oi! Pick up that bloody rubbish and drop it in me, you gob!"
"Oi! Pick up that bloody rubbish and drop it in me, you gob!"
If it kept saying that it'd be worth £30,000.
I can't WAIT to draw a dick on one of those!
London bins. "Delays on the following Underground Lines: All of them. Constantly."
Looks like something from a futuristic movie. Needs a hover-car parked next to it.
Don't worry, they'll only be around for the Olympics and then when all the tourists are gone they'll vanish
Like Vancouvers Olympic Line?
It's not worth it if it costs £30,000. That's just way to expensive for something like that.
It's backed by private investors, you have no place to bitch about it being a 'waste of money' because it's not coming from the council, or the government, you won't be taxed extra from this, it's coming from guys who have loads of money. I think this idea is pretty fucking cool, especially with the ability for it to transmit information in the event of emergencies. Also, it's fucking cool simply for the futuristic aspect of it - this is just one step in making our cities around us more interactive and simply awesome looking like they are in sci-fis.
Looks like something from a futuristic movie. Needs a hover-car parked next to it.
I am actually pretty sure these things were in Deus Ex.
Fucking Chavs might break them. THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.
Someone finds out how to get into the LCD to project images Next minute you'll have porn going off :v:
Someone finds out how to get into the LCD to project images Next minute you'll have porn going off :v:
I'll pay to see someone put goatse as an image just to see the reactions.

So this is where the Olympic budget is going. No wonder it's so overbudget.
soccer moms
can I just ask, what the hell is a 'soccer mom' i'm assuming its a woman whose son plays soccer, but im sure there's more to it
[release]
Hahah, I can't believe they actually think any of the lines will have "Good Service" during the Olympics.
"Oi! Pick up that bloody rubbish and drop it in me, you gob!"
PICK UP THAT CAN
can I just ask, what the hell is a 'soccer mom' i'm assuming its a woman whose son plays soccer, but im sure there's more to it
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=soccer+mom Basically the personification of "no fun allowed."
Great idea in my opinion but I can just see assholes attempting to break the screens and fucking soccer moms complaining about all the wifi giving them cancer
Its okay, its the UK. The only issue will be someone attempting to break the screens, which shouldn't be an issue I'd hope. There similar digital advertising screens and they seem to have toughened glass in front of the screen to prevent damage.
Rubbish.
