Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce says "the world has gone mad" after his own government approved the highly contentious Shenhua Watermark coal mine in his NSW electorate, despite his vehement protests.
Environment Minister Greg Hunt on Wednesday conditionally approved the $1.2 billion project, putting him at odds with his Nationals colleague who has previously decried the proposal by the Chinese government-owned firm as "an absurdity".
"I've never supported the Shenhua mine. I think it is ridiculous that you would have a major mine in the midst of Australia's best agricultural land," Mr Joyce said in a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Wednesday.
"I've done everything in my power to try and stop the mine … I think the world has gone mad when apparently you cannot build a house at Moore Creek because of White Box grassy woodlands but you can build a super mine in the middle of the Breeza plains."
Mr Joyce has staked his political capital on promises to defend the interests of family farms against threats from mining companies, and has opposed overseas government-backed companies owning farmland.
State and federal Greens MPs accused Mr Joyce of failing to protect his constituents from the mammoth Shenhua proposal.
NSW Greens MP and mining spokesman Jeremy Buckingham said on Twitter that Mr Joyce was "fucking useless'.
First Banarby gets forced to boycott Q&A because Abbott has a personal vendetta against the ABC, now Abbott steps on him like this. This isn't good for National-Liberal relations
Sometimes it's easy to forget that the Liberals and Nationals are separate parties, and why people shouldn't refer to their coalition as the LNP except in Queensland.
Pretty ballsy move to be shitting on the deputy leader of the Nationals like that.
Doesn't sound smart to damage an area you depend on for agriculture to me. I'm not saying Aussies would starve from it, and I hope they wouldn't but I don't imagine it helping.

Its even worse considering its not an Australian owned company, it basically shits in the face of everything that the government is constantly going on about.
aus politics is a clusterfuck right now

Yeah this is pretty much bullshit. Maybe I'd be less pissed about foreign mining companies if Australia got some sort of compensation for all the resources they dig up. Like a tax for mining or something.
Yeah he's bullshitting.
This mine was on the cards for almost a decade, how is it even surprising? Labor was giving prospecting permits for the area, the liberals just hopped on board thinking it was a good idea.
It's positive for economy as a whole but the real losers in it are the locals, and Barnaby Joyce's reputation.

Yes let's throw away one of the integral parts of Australia's economy with a tax. Mining already does siphon a lot back into Australia, trashing the already diminishing comptetitiveness of the industry with a tax for that bit extra is ridiculous.

Yeah no mining only constitutes a whopping 4% of Australia's economy, and economists have said that if the entire mining industry just closed overnight, 94% of our GDP would remain intact while our emission s would drop 40%.
Also, you know the mining industry actually pays less tax than your average citizen, right?
Of every dollar the mining industry makes, 80 cents goes straight overseas into the pockets of foreign billionaires, while only 6 cents get paid as tax.
For comparison, personal income tax starts at 19c per dollar for the $18,201-$37,000 bracket and goes all the way up to 45c per dollar for the $180,000+ bracket.
Least it's not an ugly wind farm
Abbott fucking LOVES his coal mines, doesn't he? Half the time I hear about strayan politics it's about fucking mining
Out of all the value minerals I'm sure the continent of Australia has ( and I know for a fact it has, it being a continetn ) why coal? Maybe that's only me.

Except in WA, mining is out largest source of income. But that's probably because we get shit all in GST.
It'll be second to GST this year now that iron ore rate have dropped.
Either way, we should stop mining coal completely. I feel sorry for Qld with their CSG too.

Yes we do have other valuable commodities such as iron and I'm pretty sure uranium, but it's not as if there is coal, iron and uranium all under that single area of agricultural land and the highest bidder happened to be a coal mining company.
