The rock popped into existence in front of the six-wheeled rover Opportunity a few days ago, entirely out of the blue. The "jelly doughnut-sized" rock, nicknamed "Pinnacle Island", is now resting in front of the rover, and scientists are trying to decide what to do. "Mars keeps throwing new stuff at us!" said Mars Exploration Rover lead scientist Steve Squyres.
Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/01/17/mars-mysterious-rock_n_4617458.html?utm_hp_ref=uk-tech&ir=UK+Tech another: http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/17/5318740/mystery-rock-suddenly-appears-near-mars-rover-puzzling-scientists It begins, I want to believe
It's a glitch in the simulation. We were never meant to see Mars, they hadn't finished coding it yet.
the LODs just needed time
I was going to say that a powerful wind blew it there but all the other pebbles in the two pictures remain unchanged :tinfoil:
Clearly it is some sort of Martian scouting device.
Well, Mars has wind.
martian children throwing rocks, barely missing curiosity
martian pet rock obv
I, for one, welcome our new pebble overlords.
twist, the rock IS a martian
Could it actually be happening?

"Player Martian has spawned: pebble."
"jelly doughnut-sized"
I'm glad NASA's description is so indepth, from the picture I couldn't tell if it was jelly or chocolate covered doughnut sized
Could it actually be happening?
Yes there are aliens on mars and they decided the best course for communication was subtly placing a rock in a way that could easily be dismissed and then continued hiding and avoiding all other contact.
obviously it's challenging the Opportunity
Well, Mars has wind.
That's what I'm thinking, maybe it was just the wind that moved the rock, coincidentally, in front of the rover. Or it was....aliens :tinfoil: (probably just the wind though)
Martian used create rock! It's super effective! Rover is confused!

Then again, some also didnt, and if the wind could move the mystery rock, it should've moved whatever smaller pebbles were there as well, and alot of them didn't move. Could be terrain, though. Hard to tell.

it's interesting to me that there's an impression or indent in the same spot as the rock in the 'before' picture i'm betting it's just wind, but it'd be cool if it was some sort of cloaked rock using martian technology or something
its a rock crab i used to kill these guys north of Rellekka
Oh God! Tim Allen is the rock on Mars? How did he get there? RIP Tool Time!
I always imagined that if Tim Allen got crushed by something super large that he'd make the Tim Allen grunt from Home Improvement followed by canned laughter
