Someone prod garry to change how join dates are formatted
Ah Kurzgesagt, one of the few things that really make me cheer for humanity while having existential dread or wonder in one of their other videos.
Good video, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it's amazing how far humanity has come. Though I should stop watching these videos, because my anxiety punches me in the gut every time. :v:
Fucking fascinating as usual, love Kurzgesagt
But the earth is only 6000 years old.

yeah i don't get this video??
The sentiment is fine (and I don't think they're actually suggesting we switch out the Gregorian calendar), but I think they kinda fail to justify why that starting point is less arbitrary than any other - if we find a "new", older stone structure, should we reframe our calendar again? And why not start off with writing or the discovery of fire, arguably more significant leaps than going from building small stone structures to a larger one?
I certainly agree that human history is often cut off a bit short (which just shows why writing is so important), and as an atheist I don't have any real need to center my timeline around Jesus, but putting down a new date to not discount part of (pre-)history will simply neglect an even older part of (pre-)history.

this freaked me out more than it should have

The fire example is completely ridiculous, because A) Fire wasn't discovered, we just figured out how to control it and B) it happened so long ago that modern humans didn't even exist yet. Writing didn't come until the time of the Sumerians which was long after the first permanent structures, and while it is a more realistic starting point, it's based on one city's development. Some civilizations like the ancient Chinese weren't far behind in that respect, but others only adopted writing systems a few centuries ago.

Imagine being able to go back thousands of years to live in the steppes of Mongolia. Look at how fucking peaceful that looks. You've got your little village, where you know most everyone. Happy little family, just eking out a living. None of this modern-day bullshit stress, just subsisting off of the land and leading a good life.
I'm purposefully ignoring all the raiding, slaving and raping that happened at those times. I prefer not to imagine that in my daydreams.
I just always think of all the crazy shit that might have happened back then when there was no written history. Imagine the thousands of events that went down that we will never know about. I mean not just events but like, everything about it. Like leaders, their stories, their culture, their rituals... all that stuff. It makes me feel a bit sad.

I would be bored out of my mind within minutes.

Why do you think everyone was raiding, slaving, and raping in the first place?

You can't escape time, no matter how far you go.
:snip:
Humans, fuck yeah.
now I'm being retroactively blown away by the fact that we managed to land on the fucking moon 47 years ago
Oh another thing, when he said "humans are the first species to completely take over the planet" I never really thought about it, but wow it's pretty amazing to think that we started in the millions and then spread out over billions across the whole Earth, carving it and building our own massive structures on it and making society. It's just insane...

We're just a glorified ant colony tbh, except without a Queen shitting out millions of human babies

I should've been more precise - when humans started to control fire, obviously. And why are (semi-)permanent structures so important compared writing; something that allows humans to communicate their thoughts to people thousands of years into the future? And this timeline is also based on one structure, so what's the difference?
I'm not saying it's the stupidest thing ever, but I still find it rather arbitrary. The advent of agriculture could also be seen as the real kicker because it allowed cities and thus civilization to really take root. Or any other number of things.

No because youd have to work 5 hours for one meal
why not add 13.772 billion to 2016, its the most objective estimate we can come up with, incorporates all human history and history leading up to human history. how can we downplay the hard work the universe spent in perfecting us? /s

Honestly, if you'd live in that kind of place without having had any previous contact with modern stuff, you wouldn't be bored out of your mind. You can only miss things you experienced or had, after all...

then why do i crave a partner who actually loves me
then why do i crave a partner who actually loves me
because at one point you did have someone who loved you: yourself
it's nice idea, but i suggest +20k ;) just as buffer in case older stuff is found ;)
Patching every software to support such a calendar change would a pure programmer's nightmare, wouldn't it?
No because youd have to work 5 hours for one meal
Aren't pre-agriculture primitive humans like that actually considered to have a lot of free time?
because at one point you did have someone who loved you: yourself
haha oh boy that couldn't be further from the truth and im not even memeing
