Chance the Rapper is reportedly turning down some very generous record label offers after he achieved a historic win at the 2017 Grammy Awards. The New York Post reports that the Chicago MC has turned down offers worth up to $10 million, after he beat Drake and Kanye West to win the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. An insider allegedly told the Post: "Every label is still trying to get him. He's making too much on his own... He was turning down $5 million advances before, and now it's like $10 million."
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/chance-the-rapper-record-deal-tour-dates-tickets-grammy-awards-best-rap-album-a7586991.html
I can respect that. Labels can be a help, but with his sound and personality, independence is what works best for him.
This may bite him back as companies could very likely try to tarnish his image and reputation. I hope he gives them the run for their money.
They'll try anyway.
As long as they keep sitting on their piles of money while he's the one fighting against violence, raising money for Chicago's schools and homeless, hosting free concerts for everyone to enjoy, running open mike nights to give teens a space and a chance to express themselves and work on their creative skills, sharing his art with the world for free, etc, I doubt it would ever work.
If one more label tries to stop me
Its not like he's totally independent, he's got a partnership with Apple iirc.
Dude won a grammy, he doesn't need them
Its not like he's totally independent, he's got a partnership with Apple iirc.
I mean I'm sure he has partnerships for distribution and such, but largely he doesn't want anyone to be able to interfere with his artistic integrity, which I can respect a lot.
I have the weirdest feelings about Chance. He opened for a Gambino concert I went to a few years ago in a sort of "introducing this new guy" and his set was really terrible. Cue me looking him up a fe years later and discovering that he's putting out awesome stuff and now I am super confused
keep at it lil chano

It may have been you just got unlucky with seeing him for the first time, or maybe he was still new to the game, I dunno how long ago it was.

You get better by working hard and even the greats go through that. Hell, over the last 8 months I've turned from a shitty Yung summie wannabe into a decent enough meechy Darko style rapper, and the effort shows
Its not like he's totally independent, he's got a partnership with Apple iirc.
distributors and labels are different things [editline]19th February 2017[/editline]
This may bite him back as companies could very likely try to tarnish his image and reputation. Crazy to see Kanye still on top when most other rappers of the 90's are off the billboard.

I don't listen to rap but I should hear what his music is about.
He's definitely taking a chance (the rapper)
Holy fuck he sounds like a really swell guy. I don't listen to rap but I should hear what his music is about.
his music is full of soulful gospel sounds and his latest album is meant to appeal to people who aren't huge rap fans (not that that's a bad thing of course) nice to see so much love for chano on facepunch tho
He's my second favorite current artist after Kdot, and definitely in my top 5 favorite of all time.
