PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Curiosity rover will mark one year on Mars next week and has already achieved its main science goal of revealing ancient Mars could have supported life. The mobile laboratory also is guiding designs for future planetary missions.
"Successes of our Curiosity -- that dramatic touchdown a year ago and the science findings since then -- advance us toward further exploration, including sending humans to an asteroid and Mars," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. "Wheel tracks now, will lead to boot prints later."
After inspiring millions of people worldwide with its successful landing in a crater on the Red Planet on Aug. 5, 2012, PDT (Aug. 6, 2012, EDT), Curiosity has provided more than 190 gigabits of data; returned more than 36,700 full images and 35,000 thumbnail images; fired more than 75,000 laser shots to investigate the composition of targets; collected and analyzed sample material from two rocks; and driven more than one mile (1.6 kilometers).
Here's to many more years of Science and Exploration!
Holy shit, already?
Christ.
Nice to see we're still crushin' it.
It's only just over halfway through a martian year :v:
I remember that day. There was a thread made for the event I believe.
One year already?! Damn it seems like just a couple months ago!
I remember filling my screens with the mission simulator that I think was fed with realtime data from curiosity during its descent, and the livestream of mission control. Was pretty awesome watching that thing actually land.
I also was watching the descent imager video yesterday.
It's one year tomorrow not today
Whoops close enough.
watching the livestream from nasa while also watching the curiosity landing simulator was pretty fun
As said in the video, thing like this bring out the best in us
I can't believe we've been at war with the Martians for a year..

My friendlies :(
I didn't know we had a rover on mars

NASA actually has been to the red planet numerous times with mobile rovers, Curiosity is actually the fourth of its kind. First with Sojourner back in 1997, then spirit and opportunity, now curiosity. However, sojourner was tiny, so was spirit and so is the currently operating opportunity. Curiosity is unique though due to its wider mission profile, and its size being akin to that of a small car.
i remember watching this
it felt like a month ago
i need to re-evaluate how i spend my time
Wow, time flies. I too, was watching the live feed and simulation, it was pretty damn awesome how it all came together.

Yeah, I can't believe it's been a year. I still remember how happy everyone in mission control was when the mission launched successfully. That was awesome to watch.

Sorry
That's my reaction to rocks too.
i think its almost been a year since the freefall from space also
Curiosity actually played Happy Birthday to itself on mars using some of it's testing instruments
