Vatican condemns attack on Rome church during protest.
Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said he "condemned the violence and the fact that a church was desecrated by some protesters who broke in and destroyed some images." He referred to the clashes in Rome as "horrific."The 18th-century church of Santi Marcellino and Pietro is near St John Lateran Square where much of Saturday's violence occurred. "When I came down, I saw the entrance door had been smashed in," the church's parish priest, Father Giuseppe Ciucci, was quoted by Italian media as saying.
"The Virgin Mary's statue which was at the entrance had been taken away and I saw it had been thrown into the street and smashed," he said. "I went into the sacristy and I saw the door there was also destroyed. The large crucifix at the entrance had been vandalised," he added.
Hundreds of protesters torched cars, smashed banks and hurled rocks at police during the clashes. Tens of thousands of people had been protesting against government cutbacks and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
No it's not, the italian government deserves everything it's getting
Wow, these Occupy events need to get their shit together. More and more people are showing up who protest for the sake of simply doing it and vandalize for the kicks/thievery.
Needless to say it's tearing down the movement's reputation...

I don't think the protest in Rome is going to hurt the protests in the US, UK and Canada.

What the Occupy protesters need is an official set of demands. It's all starting to sound like 'Capitalism is bad' but there are no real alternatives put forward. If they want more regulation on banks, that's already happening, I'm all for peaceful protest but you can't consider something a movement if there is no goal. Right now it's just a bunch of angry people complaining in masses. No one can disagree that the economy is fucked up and I hope something comes out of this, but I hope a purpose is founded before the opportunity is fizzled out by people who assume these guys are doing nothing but damage.

Italians have a right to be really fucking angry
What the fuck world.

I thought everyone had pretty much settled on the problem being the income disparity?
That's what the whole "I'm the 99%" thing means.
Burning cars and vandalizing stores is stupid as fuck, but I'm all for the destruction of churches and christian symbols.
Religion is a plague, one of the worst diseases in human history.

The problem is identified, the solution isn't.

Exactly. But while the actual protesters are trying to figure that out, there are vandals going around just smashing stuff for fun apparently.

Agreed, now lets go kill all those Christians ruining our 'perfect society'.
Fuck freedoms etc etc.

Always ironic when an Atheist states their belief in the nature of a religious fanatic, meanwhile dismissing other religions because of their religious fanatics.

In Italy it's a different story, they SHOULD be rioting.

Intolerant people like you are the real plague of society.

Rioting never gets any where and only hurts the innocent.
The problem is identified, the solution isn't.
It's up to the people to say what they want, and the government to figure out how to make it happen.

The outcome still doesn't justify the destruction of peoples property.
Im just going to leave this here:

For some reason, I have a huge issue with church vandalism.
Anywho. The #Occupy peeps HAD a proposed list of demands back in... 09.
I heard around here somewhere they had another list for 2011, but it included shit like "raise the minimum wage to $20" and other generally batshit insane demands.
The problem is for the most part known...but at this point the movement has grown enough and is so disorganized that the whole point of the thing is heavily diluted by misinterpretations, assholes, and people who want free money from the government.

Are you sure? Both the Stonewall and 92' L.A. Riots set the stage for huge civil rights advancements. I'm usually not big on "the end justifies the means", especially for something like the L.A. Riots where there was loss of life, but trading destruction of property for the liberation of a social group is well worth it in my book.

Seriously, people complain about how much destruction religion has caused and you think doing the same thing is going to solve anything? That's retarded.

Wow, go to hell dude.
A) this was a catholic church.
B) What the hell, dude.
C) ...WHAT THE HELL.
D) those people in the church are there because it makes them happy, it gives them direction. Wanting and supporting the destruction of happiness simply because YOU don't like THEIR happiness is fucked up.

Destroying a church because you disagree with the religion is pretty stupid, I agree with you there, but why does it get special consideration for being a Catholic one

I would completely disagree, especially if someone lost their life. What good are those rights to the person who is now dead? But if they aren't going to do it peacefully they should at least have the intelligence to target those who are harming them, not just attacking everything, including innocents.

He spoke of the destruction of Christian symbols specifically. i was just looking for more things to hit him with.
Riots should stay in the streets. Burning cars and destroying government property is bad enough. No need to intrude into people's lifes too.
If they want to destroy stuff they should invade government buildings.

I'd rather just go with not destroying stuff in the first place...

You're just as bad as the religious fanatics.
Advocating the destruction of an institution so that your own ideal ones would be set up.
Grow a brain.
Rioting and violent protesting can sometimes force change (like the Poll Tax Riots that led to the resignation of Margaret Thatcher) but in the vast majority of cases it does more harm to a cause than good. In the end it means nobody will have to address the subject of the protest at all because it gets lost in all the excitement of burning cars and smashed up buildings.
After it's all over and everyone has been arrested it just means that all the politicians have left to do is say "well this whole thing was nothing but a load of trouble makers getting up to no good, we will not allow this to happen again!"

Also, Facepunch Atheists have come a long way. I remember a time when a video like this would have been seen as a major victory in the fight against Christianity. It's nice to see people condemning people who say dumb shit.
