From 2000 to 2013, ozone levels climbed 4 percent in the key mid-northern latitudes at about 30 miles up, said NASA scientist Paul A. Newman. He co-chaired the every-four-years ozone assessment by 300 scientists, released at the United Nations.
This makes me so happy! Woo! We're in for a better future![sp]Unless of course a war will happen[/sp]
Never thought I'd ever hear of humanity uniting and accomplishing something
Never thought I'd ever hear of humanity uniting and accomplishing something
We've had a lot of environmental successes. California Great White Shark and Blue Whale to name two.

This shows all the nations can get together and fix things when we know we've fucked up. That's good news for the future
fuck yeah, great news
I'm just curious if we really had any affect on it or not. Who knows if this isn't just some natural thing the planets doing.
It will be fine, until someone says it's just temporary, and a sign of a huge cataclysmic meltdown.
It will be fine, until someone says it's just temporary, and a sign of a huge cataclysmic meltdown.
So just another day at the office then? Alrighty!
I'm just curious if we really had any affect on it or not. Who knows if this isn't just some natural thing the planets doing.
Only time will tell, but considering we've cut down our production of CFCs and curtailed alot of emissions in the past decade/two we've probably given the ozone layer alot of time to recover.
Earth's protective ozone layer is beginning to recover, largely because of the phase-out since the 1980s of certain chemicals used in refrigerants and aerosol cans And in another worrisome trend, the chemicals that replaced CFCs contribute to global warming and are on the rise, said MIT atmospheric scientist Susan Solomon. At the moment, they don't make much of a dent, but they are expected to increase dramatically by 2050 and make "a big contribution" to global warming.
Well at least the Ozone's better off, but we're still getting fucked by global warming.
this is the first good news about the environment i have ever seen
Maybe it's natural occurance, I don't believe a small gain is the work of man. If anything people could use this to refute human influenced climate change, we still need to do a hell of a lot more to see improvement which is influenced by humans.

Edit: Rating :v: doesn't really answer the question.

Once we stopped our rapid destruction of it, it heals. We didn't heal it. We just stopped cutting at it so much.
Was it natural recovery or human helped recovery?
A bit of both, it's in the article. Mostly natural, as ozone is created in storms, but greenhouse gases help as well.
Recovery was natural, however it wouldn't have happened if we didn't decide to "stop it". It's still an accomplishment.
I only hope that certain political authorities don't view this as Mission Accomplished, and claim that we don't have to continue working to improve our relationship with the environment.
Never thought I'd ever hear of humanity uniting and accomplishing something
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Protocol The two treaties phasing out CFC production were the first treaties ratified by literally all members of the United Nations. Ever.

I'm pretty sure there was a news article just like this one about 2 years ago.
There is hope.
Well at least the Ozone's better off, but we're still getting fucked by global warming.
They're saying the global warming is what's fixing the ozone layer. It's creating a new layer of ozone to plug the holes in the existing one.
I'm just curious if we really had any affect on it or not. Who knows if this isn't just some natural thing the planets doing.
Undoubtedly, yes. It's very basic chemistry to show that chlorofluorocarbons attack ozone and effectively 'removes' it from the atmosphere. When we figured this out we stopped using them in most parts of the world and the ozone layer, as a result, started to regenerate. As long as there is plant life on this planet, and as long as something doesn't come along which out-competes them in the production of ozone destroying molecules versus their production of oxygen, the ozone layer will be kept in check.
Its a start.
I'm sure my boss will be thrilled to know that the ozone is recovering so he can vent all the refrigerant he wants now. :downs: Seriously, he's that dumb. He thinks the EPA is just a government strong-arm to take all his money and make life harder for him.
this is the first good news about the environment i have ever seen
It's because people doesn't seem to report on them much. This year China managed to actually drop their carbon emission with 5% instead of increasing it. Just look at this pic some Chinese guy on Reddit posted on particle pollution in Shanghai, at its worst it reached 600 PM, now they're seeing days with just 25 PM. [t]http://i.imgur.com/qKXz0wV.jpg[/t] imo quite big news
Well at least the Ozone's better off, but we're still getting fucked by global warming.
Ironically, ozone is a greenhouse gas :v: but its tiny contribution to warming is offset by the huge benefit of absorbing all that DNA-destroying UV
