GDI and NOD flags from C&C are also great
Funnily enough, the flags and names for my sci-fi universe were what I've been slaving over the most because they're the first thing people will see and thus I need to communicate most clearly what kind of nations they are.
Though I was a bit more, I guess flashy?
Shame that he didn't go into United Earth Federation, Cybran Nation, and Aeon Illuminate. I feel that aside from UEF most generic name (but hey, it certainly works), Cybran and Aeon do a wonderful job describing the factions.
Meanwhile, the logos are... they are well stylized and easily recognizable. But they don't really have meaning that has been defined.
Also, not mentioning the logo of Terran Empire is a crime. It works on quite a few levels.
Sounds like he just spouted a lot of vague opinions with loose research, although I didn't bother watching more than 10 minutes.

Oh yeah, the flag and emblem designs in Expanse are fucking terrible.
I mean the hell is this?

Okay well the Space Nations thing from Final Wars gets a pass because it was alien skullduggery and intrigue to basically turn the world into a giant cattle farm with us on the menu.
Also Final Wars is bad so using it as an example for a specific thing is eh
Great video, but I kind of disagree with him on adding "Human" or "Humanity" to a hypothetical government name. I personally think it's a perfect way to emphasize unity over separatism like adding "Nations".
The superior symbol

"empires/monarchies are archaic and are bad guys"
he prefaces the video by saying that in science fiction anything is possible but then lays down some strict boundaries for what is and is not ok
He states that using the word "Earth" is bad because it would leave out a large portion of the empire, but immediately follows up with "Terran" as a good alternative that 'isn't tied to a specific place, nation, or planetary body'... Okay.

I think he meant that that's pretty much how they're always portrayed. When was the last time you saw a good empire in a science fiction setting?

Lots of science fiction settings name planets things like Terra Nova. If every planet you could land on had a "Terra X" name it would work.

Terran is typically used in science fiction as a reference to the race of people from Earth, IE Terra. The idea is that even if you're a human who was born on mars, your race came from Terra. So, Terran.

I like MCRN's but the OPA logo seemed stupid from the outset. I guess the MCRN logo doesn't make a lot of sense when you break it down (the symbol representing Mars is only inside the C for Congressional because it fits, not because it has some deeper meaning), but it looks pretty cool on their ships.

Terran has the implication that all of humanity comes from it, but Earth is, well, more Earth-centric.
Hypothetically if you were a colony in the edge of space, being part of a "Terran" Federation would simply means that the nations composing the federation originate from earth.
An "Earth" Federation would imply that the nations are actually still based on Earth and wouldn't represent the colony as well.
Simply put, in a space-faring future we'd all be "Terran", but we wouldn't all be "Terrestrial".

The Kondalians were a hereditary monarchy in "Skylark of Space", 1928 and were the allies of the main cast.
Honestly, if you truly want to avoid generic sounding names you should instead look to the faction and see how they relate and how they could make their names sound.
Just look at the United States of America, or even Great Britian, Germany. There are other older names that could still work, such as as the 5 Successor states in Battletech all being 'House Marik', 'House Davion'.
Just name it Bob.
