It's Harder To Get A Job At McDonald's Than It Is To Get Into Harvard

[release]To much fanfare, McDonald's recently held a gigantic national job fair.
They had advertised for 50,000 jobs, and ended up hiring 62K.
But what's remarkable is how many people applied: According to CBS2Chicago, there were, wait for it... 1 million applicants, which means that your odds of getting a job were just 6.2%.
Meanwhile, Harvard's acceptance rate is about 7%.
Obviously, there's a lot of self-selection going on with Harvard applicants, but then, there are a lot of unemployed Americans who didn't apply to McDonald's, so there's self-selection there too.[/release]

Well I got one, so I could probably get in to Harvard if I tried.
....I'm not getting a job this summer...am I?:smith:
Its not that fucking hard, go apply at a McDonalds, keep going back every week and reminding them with a new application until you're hired. I got hired on the fourth week. This was years ago, so lets assume its the same.

Nice fucking opinion piece.
I once tried applying full time at McDonalds in my ... more shameful times. It was after highschool, I wanted a year off just doing what ever I wanted. Then I realized things don't work out that easy. Since I actually look a lot older than I really am, though I was 18 I looked more like 23-25. The Manager had a smirk on her face like "lol mid-20's aged loser". Shit was embarassing, but then again the manager was a lady in her 40's. So you know, she can go screw herself.
We didn't hire anybody at our store for Hiring Day.
where i work we had 1 full time job going and about 86 people applied for it.
its mental.
"I don't understand statistics!"
This is pretty much the case anywhere with jobs that allow a low education. I have a feeling I won't be getting a job this summer :smith:
I remember when my mother quit as a lunch lady at a elementary school; around 500 people applied for that position.

Get a better education?

I applied for a job with a horrible education, my application form was horrible, and I got the job, just apply for everything you see.

Um, but it's not the same though, is it.

You know what happens when you assume...
Fuck summer jobs, I am not washing the dishes of old people for another 3 weeks ever again in my life.
Now, if you have something that doesn't suck and is IT-related, we can talk.
Interesting.. I got a job at mcdonalds when I was 16 in like 2 minutes. I basically walked in, had a fast interview and got hired. That was in 2006 though before the US economic recession so I guess I can understand.
Oh by the way don't ever work there. I quit after like 2 weeks. Working at mcdonalds is shit
You know what happens when you assume...
No, it still works. They hire you in frustration, my little brother did it a month ago. He gave them like 17 resumes.
This was years ago, so lets assume its the same.
That's where you faltered. Back when I was in middle-school, this was definitely the case, yes. You just kept reapplying until they noticed. However, the past year or two has been more like what I'm about to describe.
I applied to literally thirty different stores in this area after high school, roughly a year ago. I went to about eight of them on a weekly basis to re-apply, and one of them daily. I gave up after a solid month of this.
To give you a clue of how bad it is/was here: A Chic-fil-a had a "Employee Wanted" sign being put up. I was coming back from the gym, so I decided to go home, get dressed and gather my resume. By the time I got there, only an hour later, they had already hired someone and didn't need anybody else.
So in short, no, lets not assume its the same.
I got hired during that job fair. Does that mean I'm luckier than Harvard acceptees?
I got hired during that job fair. Does that mean I'm luckier than Harvard acceptees?
Not lucky, just the right credentials obviously
I don't think that statistic makes sense. It would be harder getting a McDonald's job in Detroit, Michigan than it would be getting McDonald's job in a small city, Texas.
The Harvard's acceptance rate is so high because nobody even bothers to try.
I'm really glad I don't work at McDonald's anymore.
Job situation is fucked everywhere. I work part time, but have for the past month or so been doing close to full time hours. But now they've cut all overtime, there's no overtime for anyone, which fucks me over a bit as I'm meant to be moving out soon but I'm probably not going to be able to afford it now.
All the while though, the company boasts how much more money they made this year over the one before.
Statistics do not work this way.
who would wanna work at mcdonalds anyway
Personally I assumed McDonalds was an easy to gain temporary job.

You fucking it happened fucking years ago you fucking swearing fuck that doesn't even fucking count and it took you fucking weeks of fucking nagging.
who would wanna work at mcdonalds anyway
No one. But when it's the only job that will take you, then there's really no choice.
who would wanna work at mcdonalds anyway
Who would wanna study at harvard?

When jobs are sparse, any job is better than no job.
