Brian Jacques' Redwall series of books were translated into 29 languages and sold 20m globally.
He first wrote the series, set in an abbey populated by animals, for children at the Royal Wavertree School for the Blind in Liverpool.
The Liverpool-born writer's weekly show, Jakestown, ran on BBC Radio Merseyside for more than 20 years.
He died after a heart attack at the weekend and leaves a wife and two grown up sons.
Literary talent
Mr Jacques grew up near to the docks in Liverpool and when he left school at 15, travelled the world as a merchant seaman.
In the sixties, with his two brothers, he formed a folk group called The Liverpool Fishermen.
He wrote 21 novels in the Redwall series, which were also turned into a TV series and an opera.
Some critics compared them to JRR Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings and Watership Down by Richard Adams.
Even as a child he showed literary talent.
He was caned by a teacher who could not believe that a 10-year-old could write so well when he penned a short story about a bird who cleaned a crocodile's teeth.

who?
Author of Redwall, read the fucking OP.
I loved his books.
Oh man my friend is gonna be pissed.
I only read the first 2 when they came out, but they were pretty good.
That's sad :frown: I remember reading like every book in the series when I was younger.
A great writer, had a lot of influence on me. I read the Redwall series voraciously as a child. I wish him the best in his passing over to the beyond, whatever it may be.
These books where the best when i was growing up. I read every single one of them within a week of getting it. RIP.
Aww, that's sad. I read a few of his books and they were enjoyable.
Fuck :(

I read the OP dickhole, i was saying that because I had never heard of him

That's a pretty bullshit reason. The article told you who he was and yet you still asked.
I read Mossflower when I was in middle school and was immediately hooked. Ended up buying the entire series. Rest in Peace Mr. Jacques
That is so fucking sad.

This is SO fucking sad. :frown: He was one of my favorite authors, too.
Aww that's too bad.
Though I enjoyed whichever moderator posted that thread about how the books were racist. Made me giggle.
tbh i only liked his books that branches off the main story of redwall... but he was a great writer...
This makes me very sad to hear. Salamandastron was one of my favorite books as a kid. :smith:
Though, looking back, I can't believe those were children's books. I remember a lot of war and murder. :v:
Loved the books as a kid.
Sad to see this. :(

HEADS ARE GONNA ROLL FOR THIS!!!
That's sad. I read a few of his books when I was young. I actually cried reading the one below, which was rather unusual.
Salamandastron.

I read the one below because I thought the cover looked cool.

Hope he can be happy wherever he may be now.
I am that is. My sword shall wield for me
I owe this man so much and have been worked up over this since I got home. He inspired me to delve into writing and the arts, and in the process, found myself some of the best friends in the Redwall fandom.
Truly an inspiration; didn't let that teacher caning him at age 10 put a damper on that gift of his and wrote out of love.
RIP, Jacques. <3 You were a treasure.
I loved Redwall! Rest in peace, Jacques.
Oh man, in Salamandastron when the badger king died... I must have read all of his books two or three times. I've still got them all lined up on my bookshelf.
He better reincarnate as a goddamn mouse or I will fuck someone's shit up.
Loved this series. Rest in peace Brian.
