The submarine with three people on board, including Tsunemi Kubodera from the museum, followed the enormous mollusc to a depth of 2,950ft (900 metres) as it swam into the ocean abyss. The creature was about three metres long, but "estimated to be as long as eight metres if its two long arms had not been chopped off", Mr Kubodera said.

NHK showed footage of the silver-colored creature, which had huge black eyes, as it swam against the current, holding a bait squid in its arms. For Kubodera it was the culmination of a lengthy quest for the beast. "It was shining and so beautiful," Kubodera told AFP. "I was so thrilled when I saw it first hand, but I was confident we would because we rigorously researched the areas we might find it, based on past data." He said it was the first video footage of a live giant squid in its natural habitat -- the depths of the sea where there is little oxygen and the weight of the water above exerts enormous pressure. Kubodera, a squid specialist, also filmed what he says was the first live video footage of a giant squid in 2006, but only from his boat after it was hooked and brought up to the surface. "Researchers around the world have tried to film giant squid in their natural habitats, but all attempts were in vain before," Kubodera said. "With this footage we hope to discover more about the life of the species," he said, adding that he planned to publish his findings soon.

Discovery Channel’s Monster Squid: The Giant Is Real, premieres on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 10/9c as the season finale of Curiosity.
http://news.discovery.com/earth/giant-squid-filmed-in-pacific-depths-130107.html http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/9784780/26ft-giant-squid-footage-captured.html
If it's like other squids, and one of it's arm is a penis, is it the largest penis in the entire animal kingdom?
Now they need to find a Colossal Squid
If it's like other squids, and one of it's arm is a penis, is it the largest penis in the entire animal kingdom?
let's hope so
On the right picture it looks like it's wearing some kind of iron armor.
Now they need to find a Colossal Squid
that's probably on the japanese guy's bucket list i'm waiting for OvB's input on this
Dammit where's the video
not out yet, Discovery's going to air it in the near future i think
Dammit where's the video
-damnit
And the pic looks CGIish
added the video release info to the OP
And the pic looks CGIish
i know right, real life looks just like Cryengine 6 i don't think a squid enthusiast and a professional biologist would fake something like this
Big squids are creepy as all hell
Big squids are creepy as all hell
But they are fucking delicious as well. Imagine having it as calamari. Or grilled.
The creature that sparked the imagination of people years ago. Fascinating..
The creature that sparked the imagination of people years ago. Fascinating..
you mean like decades ago, if not hundreds of years ago
If it's like other squids, and one of it's arm is a penis, is it the largest penis in the entire animal kingdom?
Blue Whales man.
Big squids are creepy as all hell
They are quite interesting. Cephalopoda are my favourite kind of animal, for a good reason. An octopus can squeeze itself through any opening as long as it's hard beak can pass through it. The Humboldt squid is my favourite squid, again, for a good reason. It can grow up to 1,5 meters, excluding the tentacles. The suckers have teeth and they move in shoals of up to 1200 other Humboldts. They can be aggressive while feeding and could probably kill a man, considering it can tear a tuna in pieces, but they also have curious and intelligent behaviour. They're the only Cephalopoda that hunt together and they can communicate by changing their colour. Cephalopoda are amazing animals and if they had a better way of communicating, they would be the humans of the ocean. They use tools and some have shown extremely intelligent behaviour. A certain octopus in a zoo had caused a short circuit on multiple occasions by climbing out of it's tank and shooting water at a lamp. Also, the giant squid is estimated to reach a maximum size of 13 meters, but it's still not the biggest squid. The biggest squid is the colossal squid, which beats it by a meter. It's main body is wider, stouter and heavier than the giant squid and it doesn't just have the suckers lined with teeth, it also has sharp hooks. This particular specimen was 10 meters.
That squid in OP looks like it's from a videogame from the late 90s
First thing I thought of when I saw those pictures was the Reapers from Mass Effect
The Japanese will capture it, kill it,[sp]feature it in porn,[/sp] and eat it. Not in that order I hope.
Kinda hungry now.
ever since i saw that giant isopod, i've had this little man at the back of my brain telling me that there's some absolutely humongous squid species lurking down there in the depths, something monstrous that we have never seen before i just like the thought
When do we discover the Kraken?
I've got a feeling that these squid will become the new 'testing' subjects involving harpoons.
When do we discover the Kraken?
It will discover us.
Now they need to find a Colossal Squid
I would like that.
I've got a feeling that these squid will become the new 'testing' subjects involving harpoons.
you'd probably need something like a depth charge to kill these
Whoa. I knew these guys would get it eventually. The pictures in 06 'were just a tease. Must have been crazy on that sub.
If it's like other squids, and one of it's arm is a penis, is it the largest penis in the entire animal kingdom?
why do you care about a squids penis
It will discover us.
Oh fuck
