Terminator Genisys director Alan Taylor agrees that 'marketing gave it all away'
t’s a given that the time-hopping plot of Terminator Genisys will involve some twists and turns. But we were surprised and disappointed to see the marketing so eagerly reveal what should’ve been a massive spoiler for the story. Turns out, director Alan Taylor was none too pleased about that choice either.
In a new interview, Taylor admits he fought against the big reveal, even if he kind of understands why the studio did it. Read the Terminator Genisys spoiler comments after the jump.
Okay, ready?
[sp]In the trailers and posters for Terminator: Genisys, it’s made clear that John Connor (Jason Clarke) becomes some kind of Terminator. Considering the character’s job has always been to lead the resistance against the machines, this is the kind of game-changer that should’ve taken audiences totally by surprise. [/sp]
Indeed, Taylor told Uproxx, that was his intention:
[sp]I certainly directed those scenes with the intention that no one would know. One of my favorite moments – and I think Jason Clarke did a great job with it – is when he walks into the hospital in 2017 and everything from there until the turn, you’re supposed to think, Oh man, this is great.
Unfortunately, the studio ruined that plan by putting the John Connor shock front and center (literally) in the marketing. Taylor readily admitted he was unhappy with that choice. “I had a few heads ups and a few unpleasant conversations where I squawked about this or that,” he said, laughing. Nor was he a fan of those EW covers, saying he was “surprised” by their dour tone.
However, because he is a professional, Taylor acknowledged that the marketing team had challenges of their own:
I know there was kind of a challenging calculus going on in the heads of those who market this thing to decide that this was the right thing to do. I think they felt like they had to send a strong message to a very wary audience that there was something new, that this was going to new territory. They were concerned that people were misperceiving this as kind of a reboot, and none of us wanted to reboot two perfect movies by James Cameron. I think they felt they had to do something game-changing in how the film was being perceived. [/sp]
A good example when studios shouldn't decide to overhype your movie by putting all the important plot points in one 2 minute trailer.

The movie is going to be fucking garbage. The actor list is a joke, everything they showed was uninteresting and dull. They spoiled the plot and the action scenes looked like dog shit. Fuck them for completely ruining the franchise.
john connor's a fucking robot lmao
I will see this movie, but it does look poopy.
Honestly would have liked it better if it were a sort of reboot instead of what they've done to it now.
I don't know that I'd criticize it in this case.
Scenario #1: They keep the twists out of the trailer. The audience that sees the movie the first weekend is smaller, since the trailers show less interesting bits. Does that audience get blown away so much by the twists that they recommend the movie to people, thereby leading to larger box office returns? I don't see that happening with this movie.
Scenario #2: They put everything they can in the trailer. This guarantees the biggest possible opening weekend at the cost of losing the impact the twists might have had. This approach makes the most sense to me because I think this is a movie that anyone who's interested in seeing this movie is going to see it that first weekend. After that it's going to drop 60% or more every weekend till it's out of theaters. I don't think this was ever going to be a Jurassic World type of movie where it just keeps pulling in the audience week after week.
Wait, you mean the movie isn't a 2 minute short?
Seriously, they should fire that marketing team. "It'll let people know that this is more than a reboot and that they'll see something they haven't seen before!" Oh, like Sarah working with a Terminator from the start wouldn't do that? That's like having the trailer for the sixth Harry Potter showing... that scene. (Is there really anyone who doesn't know yet?) "It's not just another Harry Potter movie, things happen in it!" No shit surprising things happen in a movie, that's the point! YOu aren't supposed to know everything that happens beforehand!
Then again, Hangover got two sequels...
Still, when I eventually become dictator of the world, I'm going to make a law stating that movie trailers are forbidden from showing any footage after the halfway mark of the film.

Mad Max: Fury Road did this and it was very good.
The trailer came on for this whilst watching Mad Max and they literally give away 2 major plot twists and pretty much the entire story line in the trailer..
I mean, honestly, what the fuck is the point in watching the film then? It's like if the trailer for Shutter Island contained the plot twist, nobody would go and see it. Whoever was in charge of marketing and the creation of the trailer is a complete and utter moron
I went to a screening and the fact that it was spoiled was the least of its problems. This made Terminator Salvation look like Judgement Day.
Mad Max: Fury Road did this and it was very good.
Fury Road wasn't really a reboot though. I mean, in a sense it is, cause it's reviving an old series, but I don't think it negates any of the older movies.

Arnolds good though

also, I really liked the trailer, it has some pretty good acting in it too

I don't know what you're all so pissy about, this is a great trailer
They showed how the T-3000 gets ripped apart by the magnetic field of a time machine in the trailer.
That movie could've been at the very least a fun movie to watch and mock with friends. But they threw out everything. It's the poster child for trailers showing too much.

One of the first scenes is Max's classic Interceptor getting thrashed. It made a very conscious break from the film canon or whatever you want to call it.
What really boggles the mind is that they'd been marketing it for ages without spoiling the John Connor subplot. Then suddenly, on the last trailer, they just spoiled ALL OF IT. Why? Why did they even think they NEEDED to spoil as much plot as possible? Their excuse for doing it is bullshit because it's a fucking terminator movie with Arnold in it. Just tell us that and then shut the fuck up.
but of course I can't be too mad here because apparently the movie is shit so whatever lol
I wonder if there's some bizarre marketing reason for giving away the entire plot. Something stupid like " the lowest common denominator wants to know everything" or something like that.
Fury Road wasn't really a reboot though. I mean, in a sense it is, cause it's reviving an old series, but I don't think it negates any of the older movies.
It takes place in the previous continuity, but it revises things a bit and makes them a bit more muddled. I mean, the continuity was already a little weird just going from Mad Max to Mad Max 2. The first one was dystopian, shit was falling apart, application of the law was more dramatic and volatile, but society still existed. I mean they had functional towns and lawyers and courts and ice cream parlors. But in Mad Max 2 the world has been blown to shit and reduced to an apocalyptic wasteland. And that's only introduced as part of the opening title, and there is no indication that this is coming whatsoever even at the end of the first one.
Also yeah, this movie I was iffy on but kinda interested in when they first started showing it. But then when they started revealing literally every plot detail in the story, I quickly lost interest.
One of the first scenes is Max's classic Interceptor getting thrashed. It made a very conscious break from the film canon or whatever you want to call it.
[sp]It then comes back later in the film only to be destroyed again. And the thing gets blown up before the climax of Mad Max 2. The car is like Max, you can't ever truly kill them. Max survives literally every damn thing thrown at him no matter how bad it is. And the car is much the same, its an extension of him. I mean, after everything, you think he won't go get his car back after the end of Fury Road?[/sp]
Everything James Cameron touches turn into shit.
Alien, Terminator, and Titanic are all guilty of this.
Aliens, Terminator, and Terminator 2 are all good movies though?

I'd vote for you based on this alone. I hate how a lot of movie marketing is done these days with like 5 different long trailers showing far too much of the movie. If it's something well known (based on a book/comic, a reboot of an old movie or tv show, etc) give me that first initial teaser trailer that shows jack squat of the movie. That's all I need.
[editline]29th June 2015[/editline]
Heck, sometimes you can pull off showing nothing even if it isn't something well known. Remember the trailers for Cloverfield?!

[sp]There's also little details and references that put Fury Road after Road Warrior, which makes things even WEIRDER. Apparently Max rebuilt the Interceptor after the second movie, then Fury Road happens and it once again gets trashed.
Then we have the game but that's probably not even canon.[/sp]

Cloverfield's marketing campaign was better than the movie itself.
Funny how games and movies went different ways in terms of public previews.
Game demos went extinct while movie trailers now pretty much show the whole thing.

Titanic is a franchise? You know that Titanic II isn't an actual sequel right

I would totally watch the shit out of this if it wasn't a fake trailer.

Saw it yesterday, not everything is revealed in the trailer.

Wait...is this supposed to be a screenshot from Genisys? Please tell me it's not. Something about this image just seems so stupid...but I can't place my finger on it.
EDIT:
Proably the fact that it looks cheap as shit. Or there dumb as fuck facial expressions.
idk, i thought the general premise behind the movie was decent (timeline has been so fucked up that skynet and john are sending terminator's earlier than they're supposed to have been sent to one up each other)
but then john comes back to the past and is a robot himself??? wtf
I saw the movie last weekend and I thought it was alright. I mean it wasn't as mindblowing as the original Terminator, but it still felt like a Terminator movie. And I'm okay with that.

Not as dumb as Matt Smith's stupid screaming face.

This guy's face. I know I sound like an asshole, but this guy's face seriously bothers me.
Like, he's just so unpleasant looking. I rag on Jai Courtney a lot because he looks just like a muscly Dane Cook, but at least he's not ugly as fuck. Matt Smith just has this really weird shrunken monster face.

The only way this film will make money is the sweet testosterone milk of Arnold and people who are ignorant of its production background.
