British support for EU membership 'at highest level since 1991'

Despite Ukip's rise in popularity, new research by IpsosMori found 56 per cent of British adults want to stay within the EU - though they still do want the relationship to change
Ukip’s recent clean-up at the European Elections, the swipes it seems to be making on the foundations of the Conservative Party and its clear populist style has, it appears, not made a dent in the level of support Britons have for EU membership.
In fact, new research by IpsosMori suggests that support for the European Union (EU) has grown and is at its highest since 1991, shattering perceptions that the UK is edging closer towards a swift exit from the single market.
The sample group had been asked which way they would vote should a referendum on EU membership be offered to them now.
Fifty-six per cent said they would stay in the EU – up from 44 per cent in 2012.
Thirty-six per cent said they would ‘get out’ – down from 48 per cent in 2012, while eight per cent said they didn’t know which way they would sway.
Researchers had surveyed 1,002 adults in Britain between 11-14 October.

leaving europe is economic fucking suicide
I'm definitely up for a re-negotiation with the EU, leaving? not so much, it's dumb to get rid of what it gives us, like unrestricted travel throughout EU nations and such.

I know you meant the EU but Britain leaving Europe would be quite a sight

But we'd be able to properly rule the seas!
Plus we'd show Argentina that we really do own the Falklands by collecting it and taking it with us on our grand voyage.
Ireland can come too if they ask nicely, like a side car or something.
I'm not really an expert on this, but isn't the UK already exempt from a bunch of EU shit? How further away could they get without just pulling out from it altogether?
The support for EU is very high, but a lot of people still support UKIP.
I'm confused, Britain is a weird place
Stupid people that don't understand the EU want to leave because foreign people scare them.

there isn't that much support from ukip
it's pretty much a vocal minority.

There's 44% who doesn't. UKIP doesn't get near 44% of the vote.
foreigners
1,002 people dont represent the whole UK

What is statistics
The sample size might not be an exact representation of the UK, but it generally indicates a very good estimate of what people think.
They don't take ~1000 WASPs from Barrow-in-Furness for the survey, they generally take a huge variety of people from different walks of life, so it's balanced and usually very accurate.

there isn't that much support for ukip, it's just the news never shuts up about them which creates the narrative that they're constantly gaining traction

what about the by-elections, just the media's doing?
what about the by-elections, just the media's doing?
The by-election caused by a Conservative MP switching sides should be discounted IMO. Its entirely possible that an area was just happy with their MP and don't really care what party they stand for.
what about the by-elections, just the media's doing?
Low turnout, more "extreme" parties like UKIP pick up a disproportionate amount of votes there because their followers are more politically active. General elections have much higher turnouts.

The research was conducted by Ipsos Mori, the second largest market research company in the UK and was done via telephone interviews of a representative sample of adults 18+, weighted to match the population of the UK. For a population of about 64 million and a sample size of 1002, we can have a confidence level of 95% and a confidence interval of 3.07. That means that we can be 95% sure that the correct result for the population is between about 53% and 59% of people saying yes they want to stay in, assuming that it was properly representative.
As the population is representative it is sound. I would want to see more people, but you are able to get rough statistics from 1000 people. To be 95% sure of being within +/- 1% of the result, you'd need 10k people, but to be sure to +/- 3%, 1002 is fine.
If you did the same thing 20 times with representative samples of the UK, 19 times you should have a result between 53% and 59% of people saying they want to stay in. This is simple GCSE level stuff.
As for the way they were chosen, it was a telephone survey so I would imagine it is Ipsos Mori's standard method of random digit dialling, which is regional, includes ex-directory numbers and ensures they get a distribution that is representative of the entire UK. (yes it's legal, as it's research)

idk why but i got this picture in my head of britain floating off into the mid atlantic or something like that
how come we across the pond here all this about this UKIP party then?
is this like how we elected tons of tea-party people who vowed to do nothing unless they get everything they want, then regretted it?
The EU needs us a shitload more than we need them. London is the biggest financial centre in Europe, Britain's economy is the 3rd largest in Europe and it would massively undermine the legitimacy of the EU if we left and empower the Eurosceptics of other countries. Britain's economy will not collapse if we leave the EU, and quite frankly I'd still be willing to leave the EU even if there were a risk of it.
The unity of the EU will kill competition in Europe, not foster it. The thing that made Europe so dominant in the world was the competition of so many states in such a small area.
Silent majority, I highly doubt we will be leaving the EU, thankfully.

Nah mate, shitbirds support UKIP.
Wasn't there a poll a few months back saying most Britons would vote to leave the EU?
Then again I might be confusing it with another poll I saw for Austria.
