• Music for Supermarkets: An Album you'll never hear and can't buy anywhere

Listen to this while you read: I was listening to some of Jean Michel Jarre's music yesterday, and I remembered a little story I’ve heard of a one-off album he made for an art exhibition. Me being curious, I did a bit of research and found out some stuff about it; as Wikipedia says:
Music for Supermarkets (Musique pour Supermarché) is a 1983 album of instrumental electronic music by Jean-Michel Jarre. It is notable for having only a single copy pressed, and the subsequent, deliberate destruction of its master plates, effectively making the copy unique.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_for_Supermarkets So somewhere in the world, there is a single copy of this album. I’ve been doing a small bit of internet research, and found this interesting post on a forum called BlahBlahCafe by a user named GeeJee: http://216.70.103.199/forum/viewtopic.php?p=60885#60885
The first owner was Mister Gerard, back then he lived in Saint Tropez. I was able to track him down using a contact at Dreyfus music. I have had email contact with him, as I didn't have the guts to call him, and I was afraid he didn't speak english. His english was very good, but once the email contact was established, I didn't bother calling him. Anyway, he didn't tell me why he bought it, so I can't confirm this near-death-experience-story. He didn't tell me why and for how much he sold it, but he did tell me he sold it to a friend of his, going by the name of Ducroix. So I asked him for contact details, to which he replied he would try to establish a contact between us. It took a huge while before I got in contact again, Gerard told me that he was unable to establish a contact between Ducroix and me, simply because Ducroix wasn't interested: he had already sold the LP and although he did know the 3rd owner, he didn't want to give any contact details or details about the selling price or anything whatsoever. I tried a few times after that, and Gerard responded very kindly, saying he wanted to help me track down the original LP. I did ask a few times about progress, but he told me he hadn't been able to dig any further and that's where I stopped searching. I do have a very reliable source saying the original master tapes still excist, though. And I do know who the owner is.
In short, he/she made contact with the last known owner of the album, (only known as M. Gerard), who sold it to a friend going by the name of Ducroix, and couldn’t make contact with Ducroix, who had given the album away to a third owner, whose contact details are not given. So what I want to know is, who owns the album now? And what condition is it in? Apparently Jean Michel himself has encouraged anyone to try and “pirate” the album any way possible. I’ve also heard a story they some of the tapes used in the art exhibition have survived, but since I haven’t found anything else about it, I’ll assume it’s false for now. So Facepunch, any ideas where to look? I just want to know the location of the album and know if its still is in working order. I hope this little interesting peice of music history is still OK.
That's some badass supermarket music right there. [editline]29th November 2010[/editline] I imagine it as the credit song to some cheesy eighties police/detective show.
how can the artist encourage people to pirate it if only one copy exists and nobody known has it.

[editline]29th November 2010[/editline] I imagine it as the credit song to some cheesy eighties police/detective show.
I guess thats one way to put it, the music I put up is a recreation from a very low qualtiy sample recorded from a radio station, so the orignal may sound different. and it's rather crappy compared so some of his ofther stuff: [editline]29th November 2010[/editline]
how can the artist encourage people to pirate it if only one copy exists and nobody known has it.
I think he did that to just see if any one can find it.
Talk about artificial demand.
thought the thread was about that awful music you hear in supermarkets constantly grating on you as you do your shopping yet you can't make out the words so you'll never know what song it was
I almost always recognize music played in supermarkets for some reason
Jean Michel Jarre makes awesome music, like that Oxygéne one.
I think he did that to just see if any one can find it.
try "find my music ocean's 11 style damn" much better wording
Now that is a badass beat!
Aha, I love when people say ' I did a bit of research ' it's just a nicer way of saying ' I googled it' . Shame for Jarre fans that it was made in the early 80s, if it was more recent there would probably be a bunch of good quality copies on the internet
This music is very boring.
Aha, I love when people say ' I did a bit of research ' it's just a nicer way of saying ' I googled it' .
doing internet science with google
I bet hipsters love this shit, it's so indie
If it exists, it is somewhere on the internet, you just gotta go in deep.
I hate this kind of stuff, it's like All Lights Fucked On The Hairy Amp Drooling, or Catalogue 3. You know the album exists, you have information about it, but it's not publicly available.
it's doom music
I have it. [editline]30th November 2010[/editline] It's under my bed in a box

GTA4 Computer Cafe music?
GTA4 Computer Cafe music?
Yep, it's also on the one electronica radio station.
I have worked at multiple stores, the key to supermarket music are Alanis Morissette songs, wither her slightly strange accent and random voice cracks. You will recognize these supermarket hits if you work in one. It's like raaaaIIIIIaaaaiiiiinnnn, on your weediinngg dayay
I think this is rather creepy for some reason. Imagine being in a dark basement or something, when suddenly hearing this song in the distance. You think to yourself, "That song..." You go after the sound, you find it in a room. It's an old AM radio. The song stops. Now theres only static. Then you hear a voice, saying "You've found it". :ohdear:
Yep, it's also on the one electronica radio station.
The Journey. A lot of people only know of that song because it played on The Journey.
god fucking dammit i want to hear this now

I was expecting an album that only a supermarket can buy and use. Seems pretty stupid now that I think about it.
Bullshit.
Name a track and I'll pm a sample of it.
