NEW YORK -- A 25-year-old man has been crushed to death on New Year's Eve by a falling elevator in New York City. Police say the accident happened around midnight Thursday in an apartment building on Broome Street on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The victim was identified as Stephen Hewett-Brown, of the Bronx. Witnesses tell the Daily News that the victim died after heroically shoving a woman out of harm's way. Manuel Coronado tells the newspaper that Hewett-Brown "said 'Happy New Year' and pushed her out."
Toronto Sun For anyone wondering about the logistics about being crushed by an elevator, I think it happened when they were getting out of the door, not sure
So my fear of elevators is justified?
So my fear of elevators is justified?
You're more likely to trip and die on the stairs than in an elevator accident.
So my fear of elevators is justified?
To be fair this is NYC we're talking about, most of the elevators in NYC apartment buildings are 70+ years old.
Hewett-Brown "said 'Happy New Year' and pushed her out."
what
You're more likely to trip and die on the stairs than in an elevator accident.
But that's something you have 100% control over. It's a completely different deal.
what
The man shoved her out of harm's way and died in her stead. I doubt most people would be capable of thinking of some quirky one-liner in the heat of the moment, so he said the first thing that came to mind given that it was a holiday.
So my fear of elevators is justified?
one case out of thousands of elevators being used every second is probably not. hydraulic elevators though? stay the fuck away
Manuel Coronado tells the newspaper that Hewett-Brown "said 'Happy New Year' and pushed her out."
What a fucking hero.
Hewett-Brown "said 'Happy New Year' and pushed her out."
Saving someone's life and going out with a one-liner, the man died a hero and a badass.
Can someone please draw a diagram? I have no idea how somebody would have had the time to say 'Happy New Year'.
Can someone please draw a diagram? I have no idea how somebody would have had the time to say 'Happy New Year'.
When it reached the floor the woman wanted to get off at, the elevator started descending slowly as she was getting off, so Stephen gave her a helping push out so she wouldn't get caught and said 'Happy New Year' before it suddenly came down on him, pinning him between the top of elevator opening and the floor. It wasn't a quick death either, as he was screaming for help that he couldn't breathe.

Exactly what happened last time there was some death in an elevator, people tried to get out after it got stuck halfway between floors. Just fucking wait and people will come get you, the counter weight would have to completely snap off for it to suddenly drop and thats -really- unlikely
