Three minutes till Midnight, The Doomsday Clock is now 23:57
Citing unchecked climate change and the ongoing threat of nuclear weapons, scientists Thursday moved the hands of the Doomsday Clock two minutes closer to midnight.
"It is now three minutes to midnight," said Kennette Benedict, the executive director and publisher of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at a news conference in Washington, D.C. "The probability of global catastrophe is very high. This is about the end of civilization as we know it."
Somebody Tell Elon Musk to get working on the Mars project soon.
Here is a link to what it really is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_Clock
It shows a timeline on how it has changed since 1947
The clock is showing how more likely a Nuclear war or Climate Change crisis can occur. Its not predicting that it will, but the higher it is, the more likely it can occur.
Doesn't the world end at midnight or something?
Doesn't the world end at midnight or something?
Well by the scientists terms, it means that Total Nuclear annihilation is inevitable, or some nuclear war will occur between some nations.
Or probably the threat of Climate Change or other human made cataclysms.
Is this some sort of new Watchmen promotion?
The ultimate tool of sensationalism continues to be sensationalist.
I can't be the only one that thinks this clock is total bullshit
I can't wait til it reaches 13 seconds to armageddon
will we end up with split seconds or something
I can't be the only one that thinks this clock is total bullshit
It is. There is no way of knowing this sort of stuff. The clock is moved by scientists. Like what the fuck? Sensationalist headlines at it's best. The world or the civilization is not going to suddenly end. Also it has been at 23:57 several times before, even at 23:58.
Also
The closest nuclear war threat, the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, reached crisis, climax, and resolution before the Clock could be set to reflect that possible doomsday.
Yeah, great "clock" you got there.
I had one thought on a nuclear war.
Realistically when it comes to a nuclear war, I'd expect India and Pakistan to go at it opposed to say the usual US vs. Russia scenario. But even then, they both have an amazing amount of restraint and I doubt this would even happen, but crazy shit has happened before.

"It's happening guys! We mean it this time! In 3... 2... 1... 0.5... 0.25... 0.125... 0.0625..."
So is this the new December 21 2012

Could also be Iran vs Israel or something.
NK vs US?
The probability of global catastrophe is very high. This is about the end of civilization as we know it."
Talk about hype. Russia won't use any nukes because of MAD, NK's nukes probably won't get used, USA won't use nukes until Russia uses nukes, and Israel will most likely not use the Samson Option. Only way for nuclear destruction is probably some terrorist group who grabbed onto some warheads looted from when the USSR collapsed. Climate change is another thing though.

Even worse. Instead of some old ass calendar it is a bunch of nerdy dudes moving time back and forth.
I can't be the only one that thinks this clock is total bullshit
heres a graph of its times on wikipedia

note how in the 50s its a minute to midnight, and it went waaaay back as time progressed.
yeah its bullshit
Could also be Iran vs Israel or something.
NK vs US?
I said realistically.
Interesting that it is now closer to midnight than it was during the most legitimate scenario we had for nuclear war, the Cuban missile crisis.
How are there people unaware of the Doomsday Clock?
we were taught about this in History class
I said realistically.
NK v. US would be the funniest goddamn thing in the world.
Machine guns v. Sponges.
Funny how the chart lists the fall of the soviet union as the farthest away from doomsday, when in reality it was probably fairly close. The fall of a major nuclear power is not something to be proud of, those weapons could've (and probably did) ended up everywhere.
The doomsday clock is something people can safely ignore because its bollocks.
What a shitty clock.
We've been close to doomsday during all the low periods on that chart, closer than now for sure. There were 20 some odd near nuclear disasters by the US alone during most of those low periods
This is probably a strong candidate for the most useless "thing" in the world.
What is even the point of having it as a clock if you are always going to measure it between 23:30 and 24:00. Even if every single nuke on the planet was removed I would not be surprised if it still said 23:30.
I said realistically.
Realistically, no sane nation would ever engage in nuclear warfare. The people involved would have to be entirely indoctrinated by whatever means. Russia would never do it because no matter how much the government may chestbeat, it's run by oligarchs who enjoy their ability to live cushy lives filled with the benefits of the global economy. North Korea similarly. America has military and logistical superiority and so would never do it.
It would come down to the real crazies who drink their own koolaid. Or a party who feels they have nothing to lose.
1 more minute and Id have an excuse to post a song

As useless, controversial and fake the doomsday clock is, it's hard to deny that its concept is fascinating.
