EXCLUSIVE: Legendary Pictures has set Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega for the lead role for the second installment of its Pacific Rim franchise. Steven S. DeKnight is directing the film, which will begin production in the fourth quarter of this year, based on the world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham. Boyega will play the son of the character played by Idris Elba in the del Toro-directed original film. Universal will release the film worldwide, everywhere but China. The 2013 original grossed $411 million.
He's also producing

Sweet, now to hope the film is still good without Del Toro helming
There's still hope! With Boyega as Pentecost's kid, wonder if this is going the Independance Day route and have it take place many years later with characters sons or daughters of past characters.
Well he'll be infinitely more enjoyable than Big McLargeHuge from the first one at least.
Oh and he's also producing it. Maybe he saved it from development hell?

If this does well in china then it shows it's not that racist as people claim, if it doesn't and it's a good film. *shrugs*
But yeah, if it's good then maybe he can break the star wars curse some people get.
maybe i'll remember at least one characters name in this one
He's producing too? Cool

[DEL]I don't recall Pacific Rim being racist. Cheesy stereotypes maybe, but from the international records from China, Russia, and Japan, they loved it![/DEL]
-Snip- It's just China that's being racist. Read that statement wrong.
I think there was a critic who loved it when Russia had their own Jaeger. Also I do hope they being back Rinko and Charlie's characters for the sequel with a bigger Jaeger.

He means that China is racist, not the film.
I can't wait to see more nameless Jaeger pilots die in the first minute of action.

That was one of my main complaints with the movie. While we manage to see how the obsolete-but-kickass russian Jaeger punchs a bit some Kaiju, the chinese one is literally K.O. a minute later of the reveal.
I really hope it doesn't happen again this time.

I think they were going for the 'mortality sucks' route (game of thrones really opened the floodgates on that one as of late) where no matter how interesting or loved a character might be, 'main character syndrome' isn't here to hand out miracles and it makes engagements with the enemies feel all the more dangerous

I can see that being their reasoning, but that only really works when the characters are developed before they die so it has more impact when they do. The other jaeger pilots weren't fleshed out at all.

So many people were pining for more info on the russians, their death seemed to hit the right note in lore-cockblocking the audience, which in itself is a great setup for some prequel/extended universe content

That's also because their death is brutal and a bit drawn out.
Poor Cherno, forever victim of the Worf effect.
Cherno and Crimson only existed to demonstrate the power of the villains.
I think if you're gonna hype some dudes up like that you need to at least demonstrate it before killing them off.

Especially since Cherno was said to have held Siberia safe for 6 years on his own.

they'd set up earlier how expensive the jaegers were and how they have very specific pilot requirements, that's where the dread of killing them off comes from. imo it makes the scene work even though we don't get a chance to connect with its characters

Still beats the French Jaeger

Retcon!
maybe i'll remember at least one characters name in this one
No one watched it for the story or characters.
Everyone watched it for the action and robots fighting kaiju.
If you watched it for the story then you did something wrong.
maybe i'll remember at least one characters name in this one
It's a movie about giant robots beating the shit out of giant monsters. Why would you want to remember the characters? :v:

Illegitimate or stayed with the mother maybe? I can see his whole arc being trying to step into his daddies shoes.

The issue is Rinko got this interesting backstory and ties to Idris but instead of dealing with her we get some generic "I lost my brother I can't ever do this again" guy who had fuck-all mystery to him.
Yeah it's a Kaiju film but there has to be something stringing you along. Even if you don't care about the characters they slipped up by showing all these awesome mechs and having them die the minute they get into a fight. Not to mention the big boss at the end had nothing to compare his size with so it didn't seem that big at all.
Fully agreed on the last bit. He was supposed to be the first Cat5 Kaiju, being HUGE, yet he never seemed to be much bigger than the earlier Kaijus.
