Women in the United States are dying from overdoses of prescription painkillers at an alarming rate, with five times more deaths in 2010 than 1999, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday. A total of 6,631 women died from taking pills like Vicodin and Oxycontin in 2010, four times as many as died from heroin and cocaine combined, said the CDC Vital Signs report. In 1999, 1,287 women died from prescription painkillers. Overdoses of these drugs killed almost 48,000 women between 1999 and 2010.
"These are really troubling numbers," CDC director Tom Frieden told reporters, noting that the deaths are "skyrocketing... at rates we have never seen before."
Gosh our pharmaceutical businesses are booming!
holy hell, just how?
Explains why military doctors have all but stopped prescribing red tape painkillers recently.
But are suicides in general rising? Doesn't matter so much if it's just a substitution for another method (not saying suicide's is a good thing here)
We definitely have a drug problem in this country, but the article fails to mention how many of these overdoses happened to people who were actually prescribed these drugs. They're both quite commonly abused illegally as well.
holy hell, just how?
People probably realised that killing yourself via multiple organ failure with Paracetamol/Ibuprofen/Aspirin is a shit way to die and that opiates are a much nicer way to go

Not sure if this is a case of rapidly increasing suicides. From the way the article is written I'd speculate this is more of a doctors-overprescribing-dangerously-dangerous medicine problem.
Ha shit im getting given heaps of oxycontin tomorrow for free :v:
Over-the-counter euthanasia.
I flushed an entire packet of oxycontin down the toilet last night. Friend can get packets and packets of the stuff from his mum's boyfriend because he broke his back a while ago and has chronic backpain (gets prescribed way more than he needs). Considered trying them to see what all the fuss is about, but I reckon opiates are way too much of a slippery slope so my friend and I decided it was best just to flush them.
Good choice I think.
Marijuana is still illegal, our country really is owned by lobbyist.

yay lets all become opiate addicts
It'll be impossible for me to get again anyway its super rare here
yay lets all become opiate addicts
Considering stormcharger (from what posts of his i've read) has quite a bit of general drug experience i wouldn't be too worried. However, it's silly to be worried about someone i've never met in NZ.

Interesting thing about NZ and the US though. They are the only two countries in the world to allow advertising for prescription medications.
16 posts in and no Judas Priest jokes? I'm almost disappointed.

Yuck
I don't think people understand how dangerous painkillers are, simply because they are so easily available.
But Max Payne takes painkillers every 2 seconds, he turned out fine.
I took painkillers when I had my wisdom teeth taken out. You'd think it's as simple as just "wow it stopped hurting" but it really isn't.

I just love that I got three dumbs for this. That's fucking hilarious.
Only on Facepunch are people going to think you're dumb for refusing to take opiates on the grounds that you don't want to risk an addiction.

You shouldn't have just flushed the pills down the toilet though, most of stuff like that is harmful for the environment etc.
Wouldn't it be possible for you to turn it in at a pharmacy or somewhere for proper disposal?
Oxycontin, codeine, and Xanax are epidemic in my area. I've tried Xanax and I wasn't a fan.
Pot for chilling, low-dose amphetamine salts for productivity, and psychedelics for tripping balls. Prescription drug abuse terrifies me.

It goes into the sewage system, not directly into the environment. It's also like 9 tablets diluted in HUNDREDS of thousands of litres of water. It's negligible.
yay lets all become opiate addicts
Haha wow you really think doing some pain killers one time will get you hooked?

No, actually it's a pretty big problem.
A vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows.
Sell them to someone who does take them, and make money in exchange for them, you essentially flushed easy money down the toilet, so yea, in a way, it was kinda dumb, also you're not supposed to flush ANY medication down the toilet, it's bad for the environment, you're supposed to properly dispose of it by giving it to, in my citie's case, the police station or somewhere where they take old perscriptions. Still though considering you're a little bit in the drug game IIRC you really shoulda just sold em and made some fast cash.

It's only scary and dangerous if you go into having no idea what you're doing, and no experience or knowledge on the subject, but that goes with anything, which some don't seem to understand.
It's probably risen higher since 2010.
