This console sold just 160,000 units during the quarter, or less than half the number of units shifted between January and March. The company's original sales projections for the device, and its hope of selling nine million units by March 2014, are now a distant dream -- we're looking at a lifetime total of just 3.61 million sales. On a more positive note, however, it still managed to sell a million Wii U games, and 1.4 million 3DS handhelds.
Source
Sad to see that a interesting concept is failing hard. I wish i had the money to buy one
No shit? The only thing the Wii U has is Nintendo's guaranteed-to-be-great first party titles and without those being released there's really only a niche market of gamers who would get one.
Just lower the price down around the holidays and if it sells well keep it that price. That's what they did with the Wii and it's sold millions of units, and still outsells the U. and I want one bad for Pikmin 3 and SSB :(
I'd get the 3DS and New Leaf but eh, no money.
Just so everyone knows, this is a Q2 Report:
Nintendo has just revealed its consolidated results for the April-June quarter, and they show a significant 3.8 percent decline in sales compared to the same quarter last year -- despite (or perhaps because of) the release of the semi-next-gen Wii U.
This is important because during the month of July, Pikmin 3 has been a System Seller in Japan, selling 163k systems in the month of July alone.
Getting some games out would probably help. I got one for my birthday and I have ZombiU, Game and Wario, and Nintendoland for it. The next game I can see on the horizon that has my interest is... I dunno, the year-off Smash Brothers?
I still want the Wii-U but I just don't want to get the first generation of it. I want the 2nd gen but there has been no hints that they are even considering it.
The big issue with Wii U is noone wants to support it 3rd party-wise. A real shame, honestly. Sure, it's slowly getting titles, but not enough to make it worth getting in the long-term. 3DS on the other hand started out slow, but now it's bloomed into a really good handheld to have. Hope they can give me a serious reason to consider a Wii U besides the new Smash (which'll have a 3DS version anyway) and Pikmin 3. Maybe a price drop?
Not only that, but it seems those who are supporting it are either taking advantage of the installed user base, or stripping away features last second, making it an inferior product to the other versions.

The Wii's motion control gimmick worked because there were things you could do with it that were not possible with any other interface device Touchscreens on the other hand, do not add any revolutionary new way to control the game. Pointing at objects on a menu with the Wii remote could have served the same purpose as the touchscreen does. The sensors in the gamepad currently worked just as fine in the Wii remote itself. The only shining aspect of the Wii U having the gamepad is that you can stream the Wii U's output to it to play without a TV. I don't know if I missed any proof of concept games that showed how much you could do with the gamepad that can't be done with any other input device, but the implications of having it aren't obvious enough to warrant it being needed for the Wii U at all.
With the small amount of developers actually supporting the WiiU, I wouldn't want to own it either, if I was a consumer. Repeat ad nauseum.
Nintendo should have worked harder to get third parties to develop for the Wii U before it came out. Or failing that they should have had a strong first party launch line up, they could have brought in a playerbase alone and third parties would come later.
i'm pretty impressed by the 3DS numbers, 32 mil is huge in the time that it's been out, especially given the incredibly slow start it had
i'm pretty impressed by the 3DS numbers, 32 mil is huge in the time that it's been out, especially given the incredibly slow start it had
And the same will happen with the Wii U. Even the PS3 struggled the first two years.
This will probably get better once smash bros and mario kart wii u are released.
Nintendo should of delayed the WiiU instead of releasing it knowing with no games coming.
We launched the Nintendo 3DS on February 2011 and sales were strong. Two weeks later we were hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake (2011 Tohoku Earthquake) and that stopped the momentum. In August of the same year we lowered the price from the initial 25,000 Yen to 15,000 Yen, and enhanced software development at the same time, to enrich the game line-up. That paid off and we regained momentum in Japan, but due to that we could not spare many developers for the Wii U (released in November 2012), and that led to the slow start of the console.
http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/07/nintendo_blames_2011_tohoku_earthquake_for_sluggish_wii_u_performance
Well who didn't see that one coming, the alternative controller was an optimistic gamble.
ughh jesus fuck just make a normal console so we can all play gamecube again.
Hopefully SSB will bring new light to the system as with other upcoming releases. Or else this may be Nintendo's last console.

This isn't even remotely surprising. Sales of the WiiU aren't going to pick up until they start releasing the games everyone is looking forward to. All releasing the console so early does is allow people like on of my irl friends to get one early then save some money for when the games release and help prevent demand shortage issues like the Wii had for a long time.
What Wii U needs is killer apps; exclusive games that make you wanna buy the system to play them. Maybe Zelda U could do that for some, or perhaps a new Metroid; either that or they'll need to make a brand-new IP.

Plus I think Smash Bros is as "killer app" as it gets, and thats coming too.
they need to bring a butt load of games to TGS 2013
Just wait, Wii U's will start selling like crack once all the Mario and Zelda games come out. Pikmin 3 is already doing a stellar job, just imagine what it'll be like when Smash Bros comes out.
i like many others will buy one when smash comes out also i agree with penny arcade, we need a DnD game where the GM uses the gamepad
I'm probably going to pick one up later this year, I don't have a console and I feel that the WiiU's exclusives look pretty good. Especially the ones shown at E3, like Smash Bros.
Buying a console for one game is pretty dumb IMO
