2014 and 2015 each set the record for hottest calendar year since we began measuring surface temperatures over 150 years ago, and 2016 is almost certain to break the record once again. It will be without precedent: the first time that we’ve seen three consecutive record-breaking hot years.
These record temperatures have been assisted by a very strong El Niño event, which brought warm water to the ocean surface, temporarily warming global surface temperatures. But today’s temperatures are only record-setting because the El Niño was superimposed on top of human-caused global warming.
For comparison, 1997–1998 saw a very similar monster El Niño event. That was likewise a case of El Niño and global warming teaming up to shatter previous temperature records.
The difference is that while September 1997–August 1998 was the hottest 12-month period on record at the time; it’s now in 60th place. It’s been surpassed by yearlong periods in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, and 2016.
With the Earth warming dangerously rapidly, at a rate 20–50 times faster than the fastest rate of natural global warming, one can’t help but wonder when the influence of the small minority of disproportionately powerful climate denial groups will wane.

Global surface temperatures are now more than 0.3°C hotter than they were in 1997–1998.

I have cut a lot of information out to thin the post - check the source for context and a comprehensive explanation of the story.
Needless to say, this sort of story has been and will continue to be posted annually.
humans will soon evolve to be able to actually swim in lava
i can't even tell the temperature was rising
I can't wait for the year that this trend is broken.

You probably won't live to see it.

It'll never happen.

swimming in lava would be rad :v:
Not in Manchester it hasn't, We skipped spring to have a couple of weeks of summer and autumn decided it was to hungover so winters taken back over.
Feels like it's been raining since this time last year.
I don't know about any of you, but I have definitely been noticing the hotter heats.
Don't gimme any of that boiling frog grubbleguk.

Makes sense, alongside higher global temperatures come more variations in climate, so you'll see more extremes.
the pic in the quoted article is what earth will actually look like in 10 years lol
Every summer on the news they talk about how its the hottest summer on record before telling you to slip, slop, slap and head to the beach without saying a word about global warming.
It has been hot as fuck recently, its exhausting and I'm ready for the 70F winter to hurry up and hit.

i still cant believe there are presidential candidates for the most powerful country in the world effectively killing off the human race/the world because they believe it's a hoax. and ofc a lot many more people with power other than trump thinks this too
but what if its a big hoax and we create a better world for nothing?

Climate Change because it's a more accurate representation of what's happening, and because idiots like Donald Trump look at two words and go "Hah it ain't gettin warmer here! What's all this global warming stuff about eh?"
Every new statement I see by him makes me even more mad. Hes the worlds biggest troll to me.
These changes are natural, but we are not supposed to notice these changes. This should be happening over thousands of years, not decades.
So whatever we are doing, we are agitating the fuck out of it.
Loving it here in UK
well when it hasn't been raining that is ..we usually get 4 days of glorious sun ..then a week or 2 of rain
I hate this country

The fact that this view is shared by a fair share of actual politicians, gives me an aneurysm.

Climate Change and Global Warming are not the same thing. One describes a change in global climate, one describes an increase in global average temperature. Global Warming is a climate change. Both terms have been used for decades. Climate change is used more often in scientific literature than global warming, and has been used longer, too.
The whole "they changed it" bullshit is perpetrated by Republican Pollster and Strategist Frank Luntz.
Republican political strategist Frank Luntz in a controversial memo advising conservative politicians on communicating about the environment:
It’s time for us to start talking about “climate change” instead of global warming and “conservation” instead of preservation.
“Climate change” is less frightening than “global warming”. As one focus group participant noted, climate change “sounds like you’re going from Pittsburgh to Fort Lauderdale.” While global warming has catastrophic connotations attached to it, climate change suggests a more controllable and less emotional challenge.
When that year comes:
SEE GUYS GLOBAL WARMING IS A MYTH AND SCAM FUCK YOU GUYS FOR MAKING ME GIVE UP MY HUMMER YEARS AGO

Obama gave a speech on why Trump really shouldn't be president and shit like this was why, he just disagrees with many things that are considered fact nowadays that it'll be hard to deal with foreign nations. It's pretty true too, even China, one of the largest contributors to global warning acknowledges that it's at least a problem that they need to work on.
Fun fact: Trump's also an anti-vaxxer

Guess I'm voting Hillary then. I hadn't planned on voting because I looked at the election and went
'I don't care anymore they're both terrible" but shit with this new evidence arising I have a reason to go now.

It's not even some old belief in 2014 that he gave up, I distinctly remember him arguing against vaccines in the second debate too. Just as well as against global warming. It's another position that means I pretty much can't vote republican for as long as they outright deny global warming.
Glenn Beck frog
Just want to mention he obviously doesn't throw a frog in the pot. I see people post this a lot and it was clearly a scripted joke.
Cumberland river in Tennessee used to freeze over every year and you could walk across it
Hasn't frozen at all in probably 25 years now
strange it feels like here in England its been cold and rainy more than ever. it snowed in may lmao

This is Glenn Beck we're talking about, the guy who got dropped from Fox News likely for being too crazy; its not a reach. That being said, on topic, there is a lot of rain hitting the US currently so hopefully it'll bring some much needed coolness.

Look who's talking.
