Logged on to my steam the other day and gokiyono had randomly gifted me this, woo!
This is his performance video.
i disagree on a lot of points. yeah, it feels a bit less like a dead rising game than 1 and 2, that's true. but i'd say this game in many areas is just as colourful as the previous. but urban cities in general just aren't so the game reflects that. also, the game is silly like the previous two, but it's not 'so silly it causes a disconnect' as tb says. all the wackiness is up to the player, just like the previous games. even the weirdest bosses are plaid totally straight, in a b-movie kinda way. all the silliness comes from player decisions like clothes and weapons. same as it's always been and should be. and yeah, nick's not as good a character as frank, but I don't see why everyone's calling him whiney. he's just supposed to be more of an everyman (who is also a master mechanic). the only whinging he does is muttering to himself 'keep it together, nick', which in a zombie apocalypse, is pretty darn reasonable. he's just the nicest dr protag there's been. chuck and frank are kind of pricks, nick's a bit of a sweetheart. it's a cool change of pace, even if i would prefer to be frank again. basically I think a lot of what makes DR1 so unique is the japanese developer. after 1, they palmed it off to american studios, and it lost something along the way. you could easily do most of the stuff in this game and have it be even more like the first tonally if you just give it back to the creator. it's all the little things put together.
Didn't Dead Rising 2 have that combo melee weapon that was basically EXTREMELY good like almost right at the start? I mean it all depends on the way you played, but Dead Rising 2 did have easily created OP combo weapons. I mean I remember this thing being the be-all and end all of melee weapons, once I had one of these I could pretty much kick all kinds of ass.
Man, I hate the timers in Dead Rising games. Especially since they're open world games. I'm actually happy they give you more time to fuck around in DR3. And Nick may not be as good as Frank West, but he's still better than Chuck Greene, who is the most bland and boring character I ever had to play with. You wreck psychopaths in seconds with them.
Off The Record is my favourite. I know why it feels like a different game. Yo udon't get the same feeling as in previous when you look at the map and 'go shopping'. There are other similar traits in the previous games that add up to a Dead rising experience but i'm using that one as the clearest example. Look at the map, see the ranching shop, get a cowboy hat. The humour is different. The psycho in the stripclub is great, but why the penis flamethrower? Nick isn't Frank or Chuck. He's nice enough, probably too nice. He finds everything a shock and is just too emotional of a playable character in a Dead Rising game. BUT, the game is more or less fun. No better than a previous game in the series, but that's because it's a launch title.
The boxing gloves + knives combo is by far the most poverful and durable item. You wreck psychopaths in seconds with them.
I remember the knife gloves as more of an all purpose weapon and while it could do those jobs it wasn't at good at taking out large crowds, the Defiler was far more prevalent in that respect when destroying large crowds of zombies.
The knife gloves stun-locked enemies if I recall correctly.
This video really makes me want to install DR2 again.
I really don't understand why everybody loves frank so much. Then again I haven't played DR1. Jesus with that many dumbs some people must really want babies with Frank West :v:
I really don't understand why everybody loves frank so much. Then again I haven't played DR1.
Well there you go. DR1 is arguably the best in the franchise, though it's obviously the most outdated. Incredibly clunky controls that DR3 fixes up a lot on. DR3 just feels so much smoother and more fun to play, but a lot of the charm is gone imo.
So what's great about DR1?
I really don't understand why everybody loves frank so much. Then again I haven't played DR1.
That's why.
So what's great about DR1?
Bit more solid story, gameplay is more set for its environment but the controls are fucking wonky at times, the protagonist has a bit more a better backing to him and is genuinely more likeable. You should play it or at least watch a silent play through (no commentary from some moron) to get the gist of things. Also DR2 built a lot on top of what DR1 had to offer and it worked well, I'm currently installing DR3 to see what I think of it but from what I've seen so far I get a feeling I'll enjoy it, even if it is a bit more wacky in places than the previous in the series.
Man, I hate the timers in Dead Rising games. Especially since they're open world games. I'm actually happy they give you more time to fuck around in DR3.
But there was nothing stopping you from fucking around, leveling up, getting the bad ending, doing new game plus and then just breeze through the story in the first two games. Hell, the second game gave you plenty of time to do all of the main and side missions on your first try and you still had plenty of time to just fuck around. To me the time and resource manegment was what made the first game so great. I had a ton of fun playing through the first game to find out where I could get all the best loot and which routes where the most effective to save time. To do a 100% run of the first game took a bit of planning and that's what I loved about the first game.
The knife gloves stun-locked enemies if I recall
Knifegloves clear a hole through crowds quickly and safely, the defilliler on the otherhand takes out the crowd but is slower and more likely to leave you open to damage, especially after the special attack. Different roles and worth having both equiped.

And the opening in every Dead Rising is pretty shit, just run past the zombies and watch the cutscenes for 20 minutes before you can get back to what you were doing.
Soooooo first thing he mentions is how the xbox one version ran like shit at launch. I mean he made a 30 minute video bitching about the performance and everything but even the console version ran like shit at first. This isn't the PC Port being abysmal as much as the devs not knowing how to optimize anything at all. If you wanna look at a god awful pc port look at Dark Souls.
My HD7770 cannot run this on minimum. I'll let that sink in.
I didn't say it was perfect I just said it wasn't abysmal like people are claiming.
Awful performance isn't due to the port it's due to the game itself
Titan doesn't do shit when there's a shitton of stuff happening on screen. This game isn't GPU heavy. It can render a zombie REALLY WELL but when there's 500 on screen with props and buildings the Titan doesn't change much
My HD7770 cannot run this on minimum. I'll let that sink in.
7770 is a pretty old card... honestly I'm not surprised.
I have to admit after two playthroughs (one normal one nightmare) that Dead Rising 3 lost its identity trying to be some sort of sprawling open world game. It's far too easy. There's far too much to do and it's possible to do everything in a single playthrough of the normal mode. Also it doesn't seem like there's any fail states beyond dying and being slightly inconvenienced. Also tonally the game is way too serious for what it is and it doesn't match the aesthetic. I know that the other games have some sort of sinister conspiracy plot but it really just doesn't fit here. I hope they scale the game back a bit next time and make a more likable character or return to Frank West or Chuck Green (as the default character, not a spin off).
So what's great about DR1?
best bosses in the series best map in the series best story in the series best main character in the series
best bosses in the series best map in the series best story in the series best main character in the series
Best mission/sidequest structure as well. The only thing the original DR was missing was a simple sandbox mode and better gunplay.
They should really make a proper PC version of the original. Imagine Dead Rising with Dead Rising 3's shooting mechanics. I'm pretty sure the assets would hold up too. It's a good looking game still.
As a long time fan of Dead Rising (it's in my top 5 favorite game franchises ever) I disagree with TB. Pretty much put everything Rusty said here. I really hope this game gets the Off The Record treatment. I need more Frank West.
7770 is a pretty old card... honestly I'm not surprised.
Yes but minimum settings? My old 550ti could run most AAA games on ultra, this game is just poorly optimized and in my opinion anyone who argues against that is just one of those guys who refuses to conform to a general consensus just because they don't like being in a majority.
