It's probably worth mentioning that the man was from another village and she was gang-raped because of that, not just because of being in a relationship.

It's more that they're idiots and they don't know any better.

These are the sort of idiots that live here. In a way, this also explains why rapes are now beginning to happen in cities on a larger scale. Dumb twits from these villages are migrating to metropolitan cities to search for jobs and it's like culture shock for them as well because they bring their outdated and ill informed notions about gender inequality with them.
It's not a problem that's going to go away any time soon, because our judicial system simply cannot handle the sheer backlog of cases, our laws are still based on the archaic framework set down during British rule (which, while fundamentally sound, still contain references to items that are largely exploited to undermine any laws made post independence) and a growing culture clash between western influence vs. conservative Indian culture.
