Work has begun on a new generation of USB that will break compatibility with existing connectors in order to improve ease of use and allow for thinner devices. The new connector, called Type-C, is an addition to the existing USB 3.1 specification and is expected to be finalized by the middle of 2014. There aren't any images available yet, but Type-C will be around the size of a Micro USB plug and, like Apple's Lightning connector, will finally be reversible — in other words, no more frustrated attempts to charge your phone with an upside-down cable.
Sounds nice I suppose, no more quantum frustration that occurs when plugging stuff in.
FINALLY
"This is the only connector one will need across all devices."
You're hilarious.
We've all been there, haven't we? Having it the wrong way up when you try to plug it in, although it's only really seconds of frustration until you turn the damn thing the right way up.
But at least this solves such a minor problem.
Finally it'll stop taking 3 tries to plug it in the spots you can't see.
So now it'll go in on the second try instead of the third!
So now it'll go in on the second try instead of the third!
What does that even mean?
Hopefully some future variant of the USB-A plug will be reversible.. it's just as, if not even more, annoying to insert the USB-A end of the cable into a computer as it is with the Mini-A/B and the Micro A/B.
By that time, all computers will become razor thin so they'll just use the Type C plug.

It means it never goes in the first time, even if you have it facing the right way. You know, you have it slightly off-center and it touches the edges of the port (the shielding or whatever) and it won't go in unless you wiggle it a bit, but you just assume it's the wrong way around.

Except it's reversible so there's no wrong way around.

Could have made it round and not had to fuss with it ever again.

Sideways ?
Except it's reversible so there's no wrong way around.
What he's saying is with the current plugs, on the first try it just doesn't go in for some reason (usually just not fully aligned correctly), you think it's turned wrong, so you turn and try again, only now it really is turned wrong so you turn it back and get it right on the third try. With this new setup you'll get it right on the second one because there is no wrong way, but you're still not going to get it in on the first try.

Oh I got the joke, it's just not funny because it makes absolutely no sense.
Sideways ?
What if they make it magnetically oriented ball plug?

I and plenty other think it's funny. Who designated you the funny police? :v:
On topic, this seems like a good idea but it won't become the standard, ever, people try and fail all the time even if it's the next best thing since sliced bread.
There's probably an XKCD comic about this.
People have problems putting USBs in the right way?

Please tell me this is a joke and that I'm not some kind of superhuman for never having problems with USBs.
I'll still miss the entry. Can't do anything to help that.

Should have it circular, be the end of all our problems.
Coax power/ground, circular ring of data connectors.

Bullshit, USB is the spawn of Satan for this kind of thing.
The only chances of it going in first time unobserved is when the stars have aligned.
You're hilarious.
I think they forget that way to many companies create proprietary software and hardware..

Would require some conical plug in order to avoid the connectors from conducting signals to the wrong destination when you plug-in and/or unplug it.

I don't normally have the problem on things like laptops or front USB ports. Its when your plugging things into back of your PC blindly or when its dark that you always miss it, because you don't know the orientation of the cable your holding. And not all follow the convention of USB symbol = up.
i want a usb cord with a built in flashlight

For a second I thought you were talking about mini-DIN connectors. It was the exact same shit with PS/2 and S-Video.
I still keep trying to stick USB's into ethernet ports

Apple pulled it off with one of the iPod shuffles.

Ugh I saw a teacher do that once. She had just been claiming that she had been a computer teacher just last year, but there she was... "It just feels too loose... something isn't right here..."

Plus, guessing the orientation of the target port is even harder when you can't see it and aren't constantly back there.
