A beautiful Friday afternoon became a nightmare for one local teen when he was chased by a fellow Cooperstown High School student and shot in the arm inside the village police station.
Village police Chief Diana Nicols said the incident involved two 16-year-old boys and occurred in the foyer of the village police department. The suspect shot the victim as he was seeking help from police, then turned the gun on himself when confronted by an officer.
Police had not yet spoken with the families of the teens Friday and would not release their identities. Several village teenagers, however, identified the victim as Wesley Lippitt, and the shooter as Anthony Pacherille.
Both victim and shooter were taken to Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown for treatment. The victim had been released by 9:30 p.m., but the shooter was more serious injured and remained hospitalized, Nicols said.
Sequence of events
The incident began at around 3 p.m. when the alleged shooter was seen driving around an oval in a small park outside the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s library, Nicols said.
“Witnesses said he drove around the circle four of five times,” she said. “He stopped the car and got out with a rifle.”
Witnesses saw him speaking with the victim and two other teens who had been walking nearby, then saw all three run away, Nicols said. Two headed toward the crowded park, and the victim ran toward the police station about half a block away.
The victim entered the station’s foyer and hid behind a partition, but the shooter wasn’t far behind, Nicols said. Two shots were fired, one hitting the victim in the arm and the other passing through a wall, narrowly missing the sole officer on duty, James Cox, the chief said.
Cox confronted the shooter and demanded he drop his weapon, but instead, the young man took one step backward and shot himself in the chin, Nicols said.
No officers fired guns during the incident, and no officers were injured.
While police were clear on the sequence of events Friday, they still were investigating several possible motives for the incident, including whether it was racially motivated — the shooter was white and the victim black.
Village and state police and the Otsego County Sheriff's Office responded to the incident and remained at the scene for several hours afterward. The police station is located to the rear of the village library, which is kitty-corner to the National Baseball Hall of Fame across the intersection of Fair and Main streets.
‘I can’t believe it’
A few hours after the incident, teenagers could be seen on Fair Street, looking at the police station and talking. Several said they were unaware of any problem between the two young men they believed were involved, and were shocked that such a thing had happened.
Ethan diLorenzo and Katelynn Kiuber were among them.
“I can’t believe it,” diLorenzo said. “This is the last thing I would have expected to hear.”
He said the victim is “one of my really good friends. He’s really athletic and really funny and loud.”
He said he knew the alleged shooter as well, and was surprised to hear he might have done such an act. He called him “a pretty cool kid” who “keeps to himself and is usually pretty laid back.”
Tourists in town for the holiday weekend also strolled past the crime scene wondering what was happening.
Linda Belstra of Belvidere, N.J., said this wasn’t what she had expected of Cooperstown.
“Everyone says this was the typical American town,” she said. But then she thought a moment and added: “This kind of thing can happen anywhere. I’m a teacher, and nothing kids do surprises me.”
Minnesota resident Mitch Hayle was in town visiting friends whose daughter knew the two teens. He said they were “very freaked out and upset” by what had happened.

Wow. I mean what else can you say?
Pretty ballsy to shoot someone in a police station though.

From what I gather, the cop was >this< close to squeezing the trigger on his Glock.

He gave the kid a chance though, which is usually not the case. If you walk into a police station with a rifle, cops won't usually hesitate to open fire first, then ask questions.

My podunk town's police station is in the basement of the library. Half the time, there isn't even an officer at the desk.

i'm almost positive that most law enforcement, especially police officers, don't use glocks.
scratch that, glocks are in some police officer's arsenal.

"The Glock 22: America's best-selling police pistol" was the first Google result.
Glocks are extremely popular among cops, including the 5 in my town.

actually police officers use many different handguns, which include glocks, 9mm's like the beretta, and 40/45cals

Yeah, except you're completely wrong.
"Glock pistols have become the company's most profitable line of products, commanding 65% of the market share of handguns for United States law enforcement agencies as well as supplying numerous national armed forces and security agencies worldwide."

congratulations on quoting my edit sir
My God, I love how a single reply can completely derail a thread on Facepunch.
16 year olds? Jesus Christ. You have to wonder why they do this.
congratulations on quoting my edit sir
Congratulations on pulling stuff out of your ass and trying to pass it off as a fact. The majority of law enforcement agencies in the US are issued Glocks.

I actually heard the gunshots from my house and saw people running.
He apparently pulled the gun in the middle of our town's biggest park and chased after the other guy.
Here's a picture of the guy who did it, stolen from FB:

All over. I used to post mostly in H&S, PC Building to be specific, but I got out of touch with hardware so... meh.
They should all still use Pythons, IMO.

They use old S&W .38 because they're trying to save money so they just pulled old old crap they already owned.

6 rounds really isn't enough for a lot of situations.

Yeah, true. It's intimidating as hell, though, and packs a punch. Not a whole lot of recoil either.
They're expensive though, as is .357 magnum.
When ever there's a shooting of some sort, there are always people saying "He was such a sweet guy and I never expected him to do this." It's pretty much real-life cliche now.
Also, he failed at killing himself. Not only will he be in jail for a long, long, time, but he also has to put up with a fucked up chin.
He shot a kid in the arm... with a rifle. Then shot himself in the chin. How could he fuck up more? Why would you even aim for the chin?

aiming at an angle through your chin will directly hit your brain stem, which means instant death.
but this worthless idiot couldn't even do that right
why would you even shoot someone in the arm

I guess you could say the victim should have been better armed.
