Apple buys indoor-mapping company Wifislam
Apple has bought indoor-mapping specialist Wifislam as it looks to expand its maps product to compete with Google.
The acquisition, confirmed to the BBC by Apple, could allow the company to offer maps within buildings with an accuracy of 8ft (2.5m).

I honestly hope people don't need to rely on an app to find the nearest restroom. What's so hard about looking at signs on the ceiling, or maybe (god forbid) asking someone?
Considering previous Apple Maps performance I predict lot of people who end up walking into industrial waste crusher when looking for Oreos or at the very least being guided into the restrooms of the wrong gender.

Do you know how confusing and how much of a mess places like supermarkets can get?

NO! No human contact! This is 2013, we only interact with people through our smortphones
What is the bathroom doing on the ceiling?

I got a feeling that apple is soon to be controlling everythin with there products, at this rate Apple might even make home secuity and camera monitoring security then soon will rule the world with there products. (I'm just saying)
you guys do realize this technology has been around for years
google maps provides indoor floor-by-floor maps of a lot of locations as it is, it seemed reasonable when I came across mall maps, but I was confused as hell when I first found out they had a local home depot laid out

it's pretty neat to see on your phone when you're at a location though
I honestly don't see them winning against Google Maps.

If your phone has a barometer sensor it knows which floor your on too

A smortphone? Is that the Swedish Chef's phone?
If your phone has a barometer sensor it knows which floor your on too
you can get height data from GPS as well, surely accurately enough that it can tell which floor you're on

GPS height data isn't particularly excellent when you're indoors, with a barometer you can simply compare / contrast with known pressure values

didnt think of that, that must be the point of the wifi positioning as well. Still, if AC was on wouldn't that mess with the pressure readings?

It would sure be nice if this worked where I live. Then again WA isn't important enough I guess.
