US Cyber Command chief Adm. Mike Rogers told lawmakers on Tuesday that he has not been granted the authority by President Donald Trump to disrupt Russian election hacking operations where they originate.
Asked by Democratic Sen. Jack Reed if he has been directed by the President, through the defense secretary, to confront Russian cyber operators, Rogers said "no I have not" but noted that he has tried to work within the authority he maintains as a commander.
While he did not agree with Reed's characterization that the US has been "sitting back and waiting," Rogers admitted that it is fair to say that "we have not opted to engage in some of the same behaviors we are seeing" with regards to Russia.
"It has not changed the calculus or the behavior on behalf of the Russians," Rogers said about the US response to Russia's cyber threat to date.
"They have not paid a price that is sufficient to change their behavior," he added.

Russian hackers are currently targeting the U.S. election system — and President Donald Trump hasn't formally asked the NSA how to stop it, agency head Adm. Mike Rogers told lawmakers on Tuesday.
"Nobody’s … directly asked me," Rogers said during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing. "I've certainly provided my opinion in ongoing discussions."
It's the second time this month that the government's leading intelligence officials have confirmed the White House has yet to specifically order them to combat the types of Russian cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns that rattled the 2016 elections.
Intelligence agencies have accused the Kremlin of targeting at least 21 states' election systems during the 2016 race, as well as hacking into the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton's campaign. And last week, special counsel Robert Mueller indicted over a dozen Russians for spreading disinformation in the U.S. during the election with the intent of helping Trump win the White House.
But, remember, just the threat of those sanctions is working, there's no need to actually apply them! :downs:
Also, huh, it looks like the deep state still needs presidential authority.
one wonders how this conversation will play out if the bots swig against the gop as they have demonstrated with their recent gun ban lobbying.

The CNN source has a video so I'm not sure the fact that it doesn't fit the rules really even matters in this instance.
Snip should have watched video

CNN, left? Who writes these stuff? Is at best center, or we already forgot their whole coverage during the two Desert Storm wars, Libya, Occupy movements and others?
By the way, "asking for permission"? "Gave out the order"? What is he implying there, that other operations like PRISM were well known by Obama and Bush and gave their consent?
Honest question: How would they prevent attacks at the Russian source? Many of the attacks didn't require anything more than an internet connection.

The Dutch intelligence agency AIVD penetrated the internal network of a Russian hacking group in 2014 and got access to everything right up to security cameras which allowed them to literally watch them at their computers. This allowed them to determine that the group was part of Russia's foreign intelligence service, and they were then able to tip off the US that Russia had obtained login credentials for the State Department, meaning the NSA could shut down the attack. Something like that would be pretty good

I think it's changed over the last few years.
Treason. That's really all there is to it. If the allegations about Trump's activities with Russia are ultimately proven true, as now seems exceedingly likely, Trump has committed Treason. Our country is under attack, and he is actively shielding the attackers. If Trump is, somehow, exonerated of the charges (which seems exceptionally unlikely) then he is, at best, simply guilty of perjuring his oath of office and endangering our national security. In either case: he deserves impeachment and imprisonment.

I think CNN's standing on that website was initially "high factual rating and center-left" but eventually updated a few months or so back. I don't know what updated that ranking, but yeah, it wasn't always like that.

CNN's rating was updated at some point, yes. It did used to be noted as "Center-Left," but I'm not sure when it actually changed. I made the same mistake a few weeks ago, posting a CNN source without realizing that its new rating disqualified it.

From what I recall it was due to their conduct during the election that got them downgraded. So whenever they went and reviewed old sources between the election and whenever people started noticing it changed I guess.
