One thing we’re not expecting to see Tuesday? A new iPod classic.
“I don’t see Apple investing any more into the iPod classic, even just to upgrade the connector,” Forrester analyst Charles Golvin told Wired. Anthony Scarsella, chief gadget officer of Gazelle.com, shares a similar sentiment.
“It’s been a couple of years since the iPod classic has been updated. We can assume it will be phased out, unless we see it updated on September 10th,” Scarsella said.
:'(
imagine a 240gb SSD classic. mmm.

Yeah.
Imagine that huge dent in your bank account.
It hasn't had an update in 6 years, anyone who still thinks it's going to get one is just being overly optimistic.
if you can pick an older one up fairly cheap, they're great, juicy 160gb of storage
My '07 iPod Video still works and it's not laggy as shit like my 1st gen iPod tough. I still pump it full of music since it has enough room for half my library, and still works with a sound dock that only operates with it.
Good times... a motorola razr in one pocket and an ipod in the other.
It was going to happen eventually.
I can see this happening. Just sad that I bought mine last year because the ipod touch I have just didnt have enough space for all of my music.
Also for $50 less than a new ipod touch you get 5 times more storage. I wonder if it would bea viable option for them to release a flash version of the classic.
The article is saying that the mass storage need could be fulfilled by Apple releasing a 128GB iPod touch/iphone; wouldn't that kind of cost 5-6 times more than an ipod classic?
Aw well, there's always Rockbox support, folks!
I expected this but luckily, for those who need the space, these fuckers can be found pretty cheap and you can upgrade them with more space, or even use CF and SD cards!

And they're easy to fix, too.
Noo apple why? I need that storage, theres not many companys that do mp3 players with large storage capacities.
Sorry for being stupid here but I don't really get it.
Will it only drop support for it or just stop everything with it? I will still be able to add music and such to it thru iTunes right?

"Drop support" = Stop selling them

I think that's a pretty misleading title, they're probably gonna stop selling them but still supporting them for a while. And I don't even think there are any iPods you can't use anymore...
Bring back the mini.
B&W screen and all.
In a perfect world they'd drop support to introduce their better version of an iPod with that kind of storage capacity.
They could always thicken up an iPod Touch and cram in that storage but we all know Apple is never going to design a device that's thicker than the generation before it.
I'll keep dreaming.
Whenever I hear about the old ipods it reminds me of that floppy disk picture.
"Check this out. I've got 2GB of music on this bad boy."
I bought one just last year and at 120gb you can't really go wrong, especially because the ipod touch only goes up to 32gb.

like seriously 32gb is only half of my music library

iPod Touch comes in 64GB

Along with a massive price tag.
I have not seen the ipod do a whole lot of anything after the ipod touch came out. Once it and the iphone came out the ipod was......obsolete.

In what floppy disk could you store 2gb of anything :v:
I miss my iPod classic. I dropped it once and a ribbon inside tore and it didn't work anymore
I had gotten it for free though (friend for a new one, gave me the old one as it didn't work at all, I googled the problem a bit and apple replaced it for free)
But yeah I do not enjoy iTunes on my phone as much, just a lot less storage for overall music. I hope 32gb is standard on the new iPhone
I still have my 2nd gen iPod Nano within arm's reach, it's long dead though
I hated that damn thing, the case was metal so it always shocked me and was extremely cold to the touch even in summer, so cold it hurt, and the edges were too fucking sharp
But man did I take it everywhere.
Still use my 80 gig. It plays all my music and I haven't seen much reason to upgrade.
whoa okay i have a 160gb ipod classic and its the best thing ever go fuck yourself apple
You should all be storing your music on the Butt™ in 64kbps MP3!

Best Apple product I have ever bought, had my 160gb for 5 years and its still got 50gb space left, are there even any other mp3 players on the market with such large storage?
Still got my iPod mini somewhere, its damn massive.
