Namibia is a real country in southern African and on Wednesday it got its 15 minutes of fame in America after President Donald Trump mistakenly referred to it as “Nambia” at a United Nations summit in New York. And, you guess it, the moment went viral.
It happened at a gathering with African leaders when Trump made the unfortunate mispronunciation in this line: “In Guinea and Nigeria, you fought a horrifying Ebola outbreak. Nambia’s health system is increasingly self-sufficient.”
Of course, there is no African country called “Nambia” — there’s Zambia and Namibia, but not “Nambia.” But people on Twitter took off with it, promptly cracking jokes and taking shots at the president’s speaking skills. Soon after, the word “Nambia” became a trending topic on Twitter.
Of all things to hate on trump, this minor mistake? Look, he's a dumb fuck, but people really love to point out every minor mistake like he's not allowed to make any. Granted, all US presidents are scrutinized, but this is kinda ridiculous.
Truth be told, I have done this once or twice (having only ever spoken about Namibia once or twice in my entire life). This does not seem like a very terrible mistake.
Even though these mistakes are individually irrelevant, I think it's at least a little concerning that they happen repeatedly. That tends to bring it more from "slip of the tongue" to "actually doesn't give enough of a shit to learn the names of other countries or leaders" to me, which is not a desirable trait for someone dealing with international diplomacy.
Isn't Nambia a real place, I've heard people say Nambia before?
Nambia, they make the best covfefe in the world. Great country, tremendous covfefe.
Seems like a probable mistake, who knows, maybe the text he was reading was missing the extra letter.
While the small things like these on their own aren't that bad I think it just continues to show how bad Trump is with speech in general.
This was just reading from paper but the overall "level" of his speeches were always pretty low, repetitive and more like salesman slogans.
Great example was just recently when he went off script at his last UN speech.
I mean, yeah. Small gaffe that's pretty funny, but not really out of the usual for presidents.
That would be interesting to know if he makes these types of gaffes much more often than Obama did, Bush probably tops them both though.
Wow ok I read it as Nambia all my life. TIL

You can be the president!
To be fair this is an easy mistake, happens to everyone.
Fuck, even our Ex-PM did it but with Canada.

In an ordinary presidency this would be like "wow worrying sign, maybe they aren't as knowledgeable as we thought" With trump it's like yeah lol of course he doesn't know what Namibia is
I'm imagining that a lot of people that thought it was Nambia initially are confusing Namibia with The Gambia and Zambia.
Chances are, he probably could fuck up pronouncing one of the many 'stan' countries and get everyone going crazy as well.

Probably couldn't be worse that Herman "Ubekibekibekibekistanstan" Cain.
I legit didn't know there was another i in its name until now, I always thought it was Nambia and this was about him mixing 2 countries up.
Worse than dijon mustard or tan suits, but not even a blip on the Trump gaffe scale.

Aw hell, it's Tuscon / Tucson all over again. No Tuscon, no Nambia, what the fuck is this?

Okay for reals though what's the deal with Americans putting 'the' in front of random countries names? I've heard 'The Iraq' a few times before, and recently read a book where Sudan was also prefaced with 'the'. What is with this weird, seemingly random definite article in American English?

no it isn't
this is exactly the kind of fuck up that other world leaders would have been laughed at for
it's just that other world leaders don't normally have gaffes like this overshadowed by possibly colluding with foreign powers

It's not an American thing, it's a standard English thing. Many older Brits will still say things like "The Lebanon" and "The Ukraine". I could be wrong but I think it harkens back to the time of French being introduced into Britain - French has definite articles before country names.

i've never given it much thought but i always say "the ukraine" and just "ukraine" sounds kind of wrong to me. i don't think i've ever heard "the lebanon" though.
Reminds me of when my friend once was trying to say "Chinese" but in stead said "Chinesian"
I always thought it was Nambia :worried:
Lol wtf, right before he fucked up Namibia he managed to successfully pronounce Cote d'Ivoire
Wow he missed the 'i' better trend the fuck out of this on twitter
I don't get it?
It's really not a mistake worth worrying over.
Yeah, it's funny, but he missed a single letter. It wasn't even a crucial one, Nambia and Namibia sound almost the same.
Now, if he had called them Nambla, or mispronounced Niger, that would be a different story.
Nambia sounds like something I've heard so many times I've thought it was the actual name of a country, what shock when it isnt real :(

Well it's good to know that the President of the United States should be held to the standard of facepunch user Chonch

You're thinking Gambia
In a world where we've had Strategery and Misunderestimated, is this really that big a deal? I'd rather attack the man over his truly objectionable actions than this petty stuff.
I mean personally, if I were addressing the leaders of these countries I'd at least want to get the names of their countries correct. He should have prepared better, although this is far from the worst thing he's ever done.
