I'm pretty sure most of you know about when GLaDOS quoted "The device is now more valuable than the organs and combined incomes of everyone in *subject hometown here*", I'm gonna end this conundrum and tell you the actual value of the HPD. Since Chell is based on Alésia Glidewell who's hometown is Honolulu, Hawaii. Which has a population of 909,863, we can go from there to find the average wage, as well as the amount of people who have a job. Ok, lets break it down. 909,863 (Total population of Honolulu) X $50,000 (Average price for a whole human cadaver, thanks Meader!) = $45,493,150,000 (That's 45.49 BILLION dollars) 63% (The percentage of people between the age of 18 & 65) of 909,863 = 573,214 (Rounded to the nearest whole number), this is the amount of people who have a job. And since the average wage of a person in Honolulu is $56,311, 573,214 X $56,311 = $32,278,253,554 (32.27 billion dollars). Now for the final part, $32,278,253,554 + $45,493,150,000 = $77,771,403,554 So the final value of the Handheld Portal Device weighs in at 77.77 BILLION dollars. Good job Aperture Science, good job!:wotwot: I'm never gonna miss a tax rebate again. (P.S. This may qualify as a "Shit thread" in the eyes of some mods, if I have said anything incorrectly please don't post saying I'm wrong; gimme a PM and I'll send you one back.)
what
I was fucking bored, I remembered the quote and asked myself "How much is it really worth?"

I can buy it
Aperture science made a big success.
Interesting information you are giving us there, sir.
UCSF medical school spends about $1,700 on each one.
http://www.wired.com/medtech/health/news/2003/05/58733 Cadavers do not cost that much.
Now is that how much it costs to make, or how much it would sell for, or what it's worth in dollars when you take all of the variables that go into value (Such as, but no limited to: scientific worth, rarity, ability to be created again, it actually working, how much people will want it)
in before the cake is a lie
http://www.wired.com/medtech/health/news/2003/05/58733 Cadavers do not cost that much.
Ok, I'll do a rewrite. Shitty source was shitty.
yeah plug that into your handy wrist calculator.

you can get more than 10k for a kidney (depending on who is buying), let alone a whole body. I think you need to fix your maths. [editline]04:06PM[/editline] illegally, mind you. [editline]04:07PM[/editline] id say upwards of of half a trillion dollars, and if it was real would probably be the most expensive thing in existence.

[editline]04:06PM[/editline] illegally, mind you.
Based on the USCF/UCSF/whatever, this is how much they would pay for a cadaver. I just needed a nice rounded price.
most of their cadavers are donated to them, the cost is for embalming etc.

http://www.blurtit.com/q3297736.html more like 50k for a kidney ALONE.
Holy shit, I just get done finishing a playthrough of Portal and I see this thread.
I'd totally go with the first figure. Our two Spankwire are just bloggers. They have no accuracy.
http://www.blurtit.com/q3297736.html more like 50k for a kidney ALONE.
Hmmm... Seems my original 200k price was more correct then I thought.
Oh shit yeah, cadavers are on the rise! I better sell now!
Reminded me of Animal Crossing, when turnip prices were 568 bells, they were usually around 16 or so.
http://www.issuesinmedicalethics.org/151br40.html This is a book about buying and selling cadavers, and it says:
The demand for body parts far exceeds the supply and each body can be sold for anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the skill of the broker and the need of the moment.
I think you need to remember they could most likely get donated or at very least cheap bodies if they needed them, but that's not quite what you're looking for. I'd go right down the middle, with a cool $50,000.
Rewritten, with new cadaver price. (Hopefully this should be the last time I have to do this.)
Honolulu's population in 2001 was roughly 880,362. That's like 51,000,000,000 British Pounds. That'll pay off all of the worlds debts. [editline]05:53PM[/editline]
Honolulu's population in 2001 was roughly 880,362.
