• Pillars of Eternity saved Obsidian from closure
Pillars of Eternity is a really important game for Obsidian Entertainment. In the preview for documentary Road to Eternity below, the developer explains precisely why. Turns out that back in 2012 Obsidian was working on a big game for new consoles, which was cancelled. The studio had to lay off staff, and was looking disaster in the face – it even had a set date for closure if it couldn’t get a new project. Enter Kickstarter, and the Double Fine Adventure campaign which convinced Obsidian crowdfunding was viable. Adam Brennecke, and later Josh Sawyer, put together a prototype and pitch and took it to the rest of the company. The Project Eternity campaign closed on $3.9 million. The rest is – or soon will be – history. It looks like this will be a great documentary; no release date as yet, alas. Enjoy the preview below.
This is insanity. To think that such a great developer could have closed because of a single cancelled game. What the hell. Here's the documentary too https://vimeo.com/121305519 http://www.vg247.com/2015/03/11/pillars-of-eternity-saved-obisidan-from-closure/

Which is why it's fortunate that having a good reputation counts with crowdfunding as long as you don't set your sights unreasonably high or get unlucky and get no attention.
Thank Christ. Interplay and all of it's offshoots after its death have been, for some reason, a part of my life for numerous years. Black Isle is kind of back but other than that Obsidian's the last one going, and they're one of my favorite game devs out there, especially after they made my childhood with KotOR 2. I have yet to play a game by them that isn't fantastic, and I would hate to hear that they got shut down.

Damn, I wish they could publish the games they create themselves. Perhaps later they will take UE4/Source 2 as an engine and publish games digitally? Just anything, so they wouldnt need to go back to Bethesda.

This game makes me so sad because of those two factors. [editline]11th March 2015[/editline] I'm glad he's making bank with wargaming now, things weren't the same after space siege :(

Now that the Wasteland IP has been revitalized, I'd like to see Obsidian have their take on it all.
