Portland Officer Hugs Cryin 12 Year Old Boy With "Free Hugs" Sign During Ferguson Rally

This is the side of America's cops that aren't shitwads.

The officer with Portland’s traffic division motioned Hart to the police barricade and introduced himself to the young boy holding a “free hugs” sign. Barnum asked if everything was okay because his tears suggested the opposite.
“He was sad about protests, national events. For a kid ... that’s a pretty big pill to swallow,” Barnum explained in the Oregonian’s interview. “I wanted to bring him back to kid level and just reassure him that everything was going to be OK.”
He apologized for police brutality as thousands of protesters raged against a grand jury’s decision to not indict former Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson for shooting black teen Michael Brown to death in August.
He pointed to Hart’s sign and “asked for one of those,” Barnum said.
“He just looked at me with those big wide eyes and just grabbed hold of me,” Barnum said. “I think that just captures the moment for what not only the community is asking for, what the nation is asking for, but what the world is asking for.”
After the encounter, Hart returned to his siblings and adopted parents, Sarah and Jennifer Hart, who later thanked Barnum for showing kindness to their son.
“It’s pretty emotional. I had no idea he was crying that hard on my shoulder because my head was on top of his with a big helmet,” Barnum added.

Will a mod fix "Crying" in the title for me?
I wonder how many of the officers agree with the protestors but have to handle the crowds anyway.
Wow, now Im crying. This whole shit needs to just stop. All of it.
I remember when this was posted on the Portland subreddit, there were people calling it propaganda from the PPB (portland police bureau), which - to my knowledge - has a bit of a mixed record with stuff like this.
See assholes, not all cops are fucking evil.

In my personal experience with the Portland police, they're generally pretty decent. When it comes to news stories, they seem to be more often positive ones like this as well. I know there have been a couple of negative ones but I can't actually recall any of them off the top of my head.
Well, that didn't take long.

can't deny I couldn't keep my laugh in, either.
Atleast the original picture is nice.

I've never had to interact with them, but everything I've heard about them is mixed. On one hand, we really don't have a lot of crime in town (comparatively speaking) and I've heard people interacting with them courteously, but on the other hand, I've heard stories of racial profiling and racism, their absolute unwillingness to do anything about the rampant homeless camps and "street kids" or "road warriors" as some call them, crippling bureaucracy, cronyism, and corruption. I have no idea if the negative claims are wildly exaggerated or not.

That could be possible, though I've heard nothing of it personally. The only bad experiences I've personally been witness to have always been the Gresham police actually. To the point where my family actually had a restraining order against one of them years ago because he kept harassing us.
propaganda or not, this is to show that not all cops are bad and should be judged based off one
Anyone who thinks abusive cops are the majority is ignorant. They're definitely in the minority. The trouble is that it's an extremely dangerous minority...

uh well, first of all he's a standup comic and second of all you don't need to be a cynic to see this as pretty superficial feelgood story when the same night was a black mark for the city's protest movements and police, who are under a federal review for their behavior over the last 3 years
