Microsoft has tweaked a bevy of features and specs since the release of Windows 8 to create a friendlier environment for smaller slates. The OS's hardware certification program recently dropped the minimum allowable screen resolution for Windows 8 tablets from 1366-by-768 down to 1024-by-768, while leaked builds of the impending Windows Blue update sported a Snap feature that works just fine on tiny tablets. (Previously, Snap only worked on displays with that 1366-by-768 resolution.)

As far as Acer's Iconia W3 goes, rumors of the 8-inch slate first surfaced in late April. It's still yet to make an official debut, but the Amazon page revealed that the tablet packs a dual-core Atom processor, along with numerous other technical details you can see in the image to the right.
A few key details stand out about the Iconia W3. First of all, it definitely takes advantage of the reduced screen resolution spec, with a Nexus 7-matching 1280-by-800 display.
Second, the inclusion of an x86 processor means the 1.1-pound slate will run the full-blown version of Windows 8, rather than the neutered Windows RT operating system. We still have some reservations about using the full-blown version of Windows 8 on such a small screen, but hey, 7-inch tablets are what people are buying. Microsoft needs to be there to be competitive.

Alright, I always wanted to see 8 inch windows 8 tablets
I wouldn't say it's garbage, it's still more usable than iOS imo
The resolution seems kinda weak seeing as we got phones that do 1080p now

iOS is a boring mobile OS but at least it has apps.
Shame its WinRT though, its garbage.
Did you read the OP?
Can't wait for people to tell me how they fact this has access to the desktop makes it valuable..

Honestly I think I would prefer if it ran RT, From looking over the specs it don't seem much more powerful then my old desktop which has issues running modern programs like VisualStudio 2012 or photoshop CS6 so unless you are using older programs on it I really don't see much of a need for it using a x86 cpu and a full version of windows.
If they price it reasonably it may be a contender against the new nexus 7
If they price it reasonably it may be a contender against the new nexus 7
The page showed $380
If they price it reasonably it may be a contender against the new nexus 7
It'll probably be expensive as fuck like most Windows 8 tablets
well i would want to buy it for school since i can do word and stuff but it itsnt as stupidly overpriced as the RT models
I wouldn't say it's garbage, it's still more usable than iOS imo
It is, but there is nothing available for it.

It's this mindset that isn't helping. Yeah, the App Store is a wasteland of nothing, but that's because people won't develop for it because it doesn't have a userbase, which is because there is nothing on it...and so on.
If developers did move over to it more, people would be more willing to use it, which would attract more developers. Google+ suffers the same issue, there are no users because there aren't enough users. One side has to budge at some point.

As easy as it is for developers to develop for RT (read: if it compiles for X86, it compiles for ARM) the anemic Tegra 3 was a poor choice for RT tablets. I've seen a few people on SA who tried developing apps that work great on X86 but RT was nigh unusable.

It does seem like they chose some strange things for the hardware, shame really, RT could have been a fairly nice middle ground between Android and iOS, fairly wide range of products with more refined performance on the products its on.
I bet they scored a deal with nVidia. Which sucks since the Tegra 4 still sounds lackluster.

isn't the nexus considered a 7.1 inch?
while I'll admit the Windows appstore isn't as good, and the experience isn't the same as iOS, I'd take a Windows 8 tablet over Android anyday

A Windows 8 tablet might actually manage to have less apps than an Android tablet
