• Chinese Soldiers Playing 'Hot Potato' with a Live Explosive

[release] In what might be the craziest thing you'll see this week (yes, it's only Tuesday), here's a video of Chinese soldiers playing hot potato with a live grenade. Apparently it's an official military exercise.Totally assuming that the grenade is real and that any bobble might mean the difference between life and death, the video hits on the "can't look away from the train wreck" sweet spot of internet videos. It may also be just an indication of just how serious (or seriously crazy) the Chinese military can be. There aren't any confirmations (and we'll be looking) for the video or the grenade's authenticity. From the insignia, it looks like the video was broadcast on China's CCTV, and a version hit YouTube on January 21 (this version we're looking at has close to 45,000 views at the moment). The Guardian picked up the video today, though their description (six soldiers...passing... jumping...) doesn't quite do this potentially explosive military exercise any justice. Update: We're working on getting a translation on this video from CCTV. It looks to be part of a military demonstration for dignitaries, and we're trying to find some of our Mandarin-speaking friends to help us out in determining if the explosive is live or simply a dud. If you have a translation, feel free to leave it in the comments below. Update 3:26 p.m. According a to a rough translation of the Chinese broadcast (in our previous update), it seems that the explosive in the video along with the the other stunts (jumping through rings of fire, etc.) are real. They are drills and military exercises but the CCTV broadcast seems to indicate that it is indeed a live explosive. We're working on getting a transcript translation for you. [/release] http://www.theatlanticwire.com/global/2012/01/watch-chinese-soldiers-playing-hot-potato-live-grenade/47789/ [release] Military training is an intense business, involving discipline, precision, and reserves of courage that can be called upon in the midst of battle. But for soldiers undergoing training in the People's Liberation Army of China that's taken to a whole different level -- as one of their exercises involves a life-and-death game of 'hot potato' with a live grenade. Incredible video footage shows Chinese troops stationed in Hong Kong passing around the live explosive from one soldier to the next until the last one finally throws it in the hole. The soldiers then leap out of the way before it explodes, covering their heads for protection. The clip shows them again doing the exercise, standing around a large hole. Each soldier deliberately takes the explosives in both hands and twists slightly at the torso before handing it off to the next soldier. The last soldier to hold the grenade must make sure it lands on the pond-side of the hole, a decidedly difficult task given the circumstances. All soldiers then leap to the ground as the C4 detonates, sending piles of dirt and dust into the air. The exercise is just one of many used by the PLA. As with militaries across the world, the PLA instil their soldiers with specialised skills and advanced training. The video shows the soldiers shooting flags that unfurl when shot, firing missiles and rifles, and leaping through flaming hoops. The PLA was founded in 1927 during the Nanchang Uprising as they fought against the Nationalist Party of China's anti-communist purges and has nearly three million members.[/release] Imagine If 1 of them drop it..... Fuck man, my palms will be filled with sweat
sucks to be the guy that has to get it last. Wait, the last part of that video looks strange. It looks like the last guy who touches it just drops it on the ground under him, yet it still blows up in the pit? I have a feeling this is just a show.
hate to mis-time that.
Last guy throws it straight down, then the middle of the mound explodes. Seems legit.
It probably rolled to the middle of the pit, like it hit the side wall and went downwards at an angle.

live smoke grenade more like or live flashbangs ignore fact that flashbangs have short fuses.

Fuck that mini-game.
Last guy throws it straight down, then the middle of the mound explodes. Seems legit.
Seems it went into a hole that goes into the main pit.
live smoke grenade more like or live flashbangs ignore fact that flashbangs have short fuses.
I still wouldn't want to be holding a live flashbang
I still wouldn't want to be holding a live flashbang
yeah they did start that fire still preferable to a life frag.
The way they jump seems a bit comical and unnatural, especially if you're trying to dodge an explosion and any shrapnel that might be coming your way.
Seems it went into a hole that goes into the main pit.
Rewatch the first time they tried it, they tossed it directly into the main pit.
you know, i'm not a military tactician, and even though i enjoy men of war i don't pretend to be one either. but uh i'm not quite sure this training is useful for anything.
Rough translation: These are specialized troops practicing satchel charge handling. The live bomb is passed between 6 soldiers to test their teamwork and discipline (or faith in eachother). I don't think this is much out of the ordinary for military training. I remember reading from somewhere that US Army Rangers in WWII had to crawl under live MG fire to pass certain exercises.
May I ask why exactly you posted this in videos and flash movies and... and Sensationalist Headlines?

i was pretty impressed until he dropped the "grenade" on his toes and the pit that was a foot away from him exploded i see china is still excellent at faking shit
i was pretty impressed until he dropped the "grenade" on his toes and the pit that was a foot away from him exploded i see china is still excellent at faking shit
Hey, North Korea is upped the propaganda stakes with it's photoshops of Kim Jong Il's funeral, China needs to get it's game on in preparation for the "Communist" states propaganda awards.
this is senseless even if it is real
Seems it went into a hole that goes into the main pit.
I have been looking at this video for a while now unsure of that but then it hit me. If that hole goes into the main pit then why doesn't any of the smoke jet through that hole?
also the way they jump, rofl. masters of wasting energy.
This is the same country that tried to pass off Top Gun footage as a training exercise. I'm calling bullshit.
Wait, in the first one they count to FIVE before dropping the grenade, but they count to SIX for the second one, while it has the same delay after being dropped in the mound before exploding?
This reminded me of one of the Darwin Awards when one guy was joggling with LIVE GRENADES. Yes, he died. P.S.: Not to act like an expert or something, but wouldn't simply lying down on the ground be more effective than jumping in the air and falling down?
P.S.: Not to act like an expert or something, but wouldn't simply lying down on the ground be more effective than jumping in the air and falling down?
The point of jumping is to get as far as possible as in a critical amount of time.
So, when do they start throwing footballs made of nitrogen triiodide?
I can't stop clicking the 17 second mark and imagining they're just getting blown up.
He didn't throw it on the ground he threw it in a little hole into the pit.
