An electrode connector and electrodes are then glued on to the insect's body and a needle is used to poke a hole in their thorax in order to insert a wire. Their antennae are then cut and electrodes are inserted. A circuit is attached to their backs, and signals are received through a mobile phone app allowing users to control the cockroaches' movements to the left and to the right.

Queen's University philosophy Professor Michael Allen warned that the device will "encourage amateurs to operate invasively on living organisms" and "encourage thinking of complex living organisms as mere machines or tools". The Michigan-based company has even received emails saying the the backpack - known as Roboroach - "teaches kids to be psychopaths".

Animal behaviour scientist Jonathan Balcombe has been quoted on US scientific websites as saying that the insects are harmed in the process. "If it was discovered that a teacher was having students use magnifying glasses to burn ants and then look at their tissue, how would people react?" he is quoted as saying.
**SOURCE**
the insects are harmed in the process.
Well you're going to have to go some serious fucking distance to persuade the public that it's inhumane to perform science on A FUCKING COCKROACH. I think the world will still turn if a few hundred are sacrificed.
It's kind of disconcerting, even if it's not real mind control.
I hate cockroaches as much as the next guy, but this seems....pretty cruel and unusual if you ask me.
Quite disgusting.
As far as I'm concerned, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and rats can all buzz off from the cycle of existence, because they're only capable of causing misery thanks to the diseases they spread.
Rats are adorable as fuck dude, I can't not love them.
point taken, strictly speaking the Norwegian Rat is the worse offender in those terms anyway.
Its cruel but you gotta admit that it's pretty cool that humans are able to do this
As far as I'm concerned, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and rats can all buzz off from the cycle of existence, because they're only capable of causing misery thanks to the diseases they spread.
You think humans do wonderful things for the planet and life on it?
So it works through the antennae, correct?
Wow this seems like really fun, but 99$? Bit of a rip off, but I wonder if i can get them in Australia
scientists regularly test drugs/tech on rats before it's deemed safe for testing on humans so I don't see how cockroaches are going that much further (fuck cockroaches)
Where's peta?
scientists regularly test drugs/tech on rats before it's deemed safe for testing on humans so I don't see how cockroaches are going that much further (fuck cockroaches)
because one is the advancement of science whereas this is for entertainment (and MAYBE education)
I don't think I could bring myself to subdue a cockroach then play amateur Deus Ex surgeon on them. Although if I didn't have to operate on it and could just attach it easily, I'd have no problems teaching myself to program it to control multiple cockroaches and use it for nefarious deeds
I'd say this is cruel if I didn't know that cockroaches were non-sentient insects that act much more like machines than any sort of organic being.
As far as I'm concerned, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and rats can all buzz off from the cycle of existence, because they're only capable of causing misery thanks to the diseases they spread.
This post demonstrates a complete ignorance of the function of ecosystems.
I saw this shit a while ago, and I thought it was cool as fuck I still think it's cool as fuck but you won't see me getting anywhere near one of these guys.
As far as I'm concerned, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and rats can all buzz off from the cycle of existence, because they're only capable of causing misery thanks to the diseases they spread.
Man, what do you have against rats? I have two pet rats and they're not only cute as hell but they're clever too. [editline]9th November 2013[/editline]
This post demonstrates a complete ignorance of the function of ecosystems.
To be fair, I did read somewhere that there's been a study that confirmed that mosquitoes aren't necessary for the ecosystem and they can fuck right off. I don't have the source though and I'm not sure how credible it is anyway.
This post demonstrates a complete ignorance of the function of ecosystems.
If we got rid of mosquitos, there actually wouldn't be any major repercussions. http://www.nature.com/news/2010/100721/full/466432a.html?s=news_rss
hey I love Jurassic Park and the books, but i don't know if this joke works out
Life'll find a way without them. It always does.
RoboRoach eh? Got anything to do with this?
Life'll find a way without them. It always does.
Yeah life will find a way to kill the fucking human race once the cockroaches and rats die off and everything starts breathing cyanide and we're lacking in frog gametes.
Is this made by Sparkfun? I've got a few components from them and some have they same cog-like symbol on it (and are also red)
cry more scientists. you dumbasses have never woken up with a cockroach on your fucking face.
Fantastic - You can use electrical impulses to tap into the primitive nervous system of an insect and make it respond to control inputs, and be a complete fucking asshole in the process. The whole premise is such bullshit.
They say its targeted towards children but it hardly seems easy enough for children to use not to mention needing a smart phone and the price for something thats kind of sadistic. What parent would buy this for there kid? :v:
