https://facepunchcollaborative.bandcamp.com/album/facepunch-collaborative-album-vii
i guess it's more like a facepunch collaborative ep with that length
It's >25 minutes and more than four tracks, that's what is needed for something to be called Album actually :)
Well, at least it got released - long gone are the days of having our own section, after all
The removal of the subforum is definitely a major factor to why this latest collab has reduced contributions.
But the release is posted in General Discussion like always. I wonder why hasn't received much views and posts like the previous threads.

Yeah, some people have left the forum too, some really good musicians which I suppose has a huge part in it too.

My guess is that since the general forum is the way it is, you have these huge megathreads nobody ever leaves.

Facepunch Collaborative Album - A Review
Aight so lets kick this off, every other artists will also provide one of these so it'll be fun to see what everyone says about eachothers music :)
Skriket - Thank You For The Music
This is a track I made at first with only piano, I then felt that it would be fun to experiment with strings (I've always been a huge sucker for orchestral tracks, especially composing them) and here it is. I don't know if it is actually finished, I'm probably going to revisit it in the future if I ever get my hands on better samples. Or an actual orchestra who can play this stuff. And a real pianist, I would love to hear someone competent at piano play this even though I'm not sure if some of the parts are possible with just one pianist. The ending in particular, there's like three different melodic things going on.
The piano is TruePiano VST, I use Orchestral VST for the strings and percussion and some own sampled drums for the acoustic drum kit.
Rich209 - Smudged Lines
The intro just reminds me so much of the theme of Fringe, even though it isn't really that familiar. It is nowhere a bad thing though, the theme is solid and so is this track. It has a very flowing nature to itself and the chord progression is just so nice. I could imagine this track as a background song in a medieval strategy game.
The only thing I could think of is that it is such a shame that the last part comes only in the end, I would've loved to hear it come much earlier for sure. :)
Hakita - Every Star In The Sky Is My Enemy
I like the way this track builds up, there's something very charming about the way the strings are played, very robotic. It would be so cool to hear this track as an actual live recording and not the way it is now. It bothers me just a bit with how compressed it is, most of the instruments sound as if they're digitally clipping and it takes away a lot of the musicality for me.
Which is a shame because the track progresses pretty nicely, and if it had been actual instruments I could definietly imagine it getting a pretty big fan base since Hakita is a very very solid composer.
I'm not sure where one could find a track like this, it has a pretty unique feel to it that I love and the length doesn't really bother me.
Mr_N - Lap Feel
This track has just the chillest of feels, a very 80-90s guitar wankery sort of feel I dig so much. It saddens me so much it is so short because I could totally hear this one being around the 7-8 minute mark for sure with some minor progression. An intro/outro the same way the track is built now, with either an intensely heavy part in the middle, or something slow and sparse.
redBadger - Let's Go On A Journey!
As a whole the album has a really nice flow to it and this track is probably the only one that sticks out. Not in a bad way though, I dig how it really captures the "let's go on a journey!" attitude of the name. Very 90/00 in how smooth it sounds. I would love to hear some sort of progression of this track. Currently it reeks of "intro track" to a kicking album and I think you should explore this one more and build something along the lines of it.
killerteacup - Hopelessly Devoted to You
The first (and only) track with vocals, and the only one without any percussion. A very melancholic track and it really sounds like a great way to end this album. An album filled with some cool stuff, Rich209 in particular! Whoever sings on this track has a very nice voice and the guitar compliments her perfectly. Are there any plans on adding percussion to this?
I wonder if EDM is accepted in this, if so then I might make something, however I've no idea how this works
Very good album btw
Every genre is allowed, in fact EDM was probably the genre most represented ~back in the days~
Thanks for taking the time listening to the album, very glad you enjoyed it :)

So where should one send his tracks to? I'd like to make something for the next album if it's okay
Depends on who makes it, this time around it was I who did but generally anyone can make one :)

Thanks but nope, doesn't need it
even though i didnt take part bc time constraints, im still going to leave some feedback, im writting this as i listen so some of what i say may be slightly contradictory
Skriket - Thank You For The Music
I really like the composition of this track, its more of a soundtrack than something that I'd just listen to, but soundtrack =/= not real music, it definately has a lot of character, and isnt the kind of thing that would just blend in and not be noticed. most of my complaints are quite minor, the snare seemed a bit iffy, it sounded kinda dnb-ish, and the drums werent prominant enough in the mix imo (although thats deffo more of a personal prefference). the piano was quite bright, but i liked the fact that it also managed to be rather subtlte at times, and the strings were gorgous. the outro made me smile as well
Rich209 - Smudged Lines
i liked the slight dischordance, and the boomy-ness(?) of the mixing in places was quite good, there were also quiter parts which really brought it together, it felt like it transformed as the song progressed, rather than having a static sound it was quite dynamic. I did start to find it slightly repetative after a while, however, if it was the soundtrack for a film or something, i doubt id pick up on that, and the ending was nice
Hakita - Every Star In The Sky Is My Enemy
yh this sounds nasty and i like that, has a very sampled feeling to it, kinda like somebody had massively beefed up a final fantasy theme or something, the bass is really good in terms of mixing, but i feel as though some of the instruments could have benefited from being a little more natural(?) as a lot of it sounded quite VST, although this does work to its favor sometimes, i tihnk its kind of a finding the balence thing. some of the guitar sounded great, but the accoustic stuff 4 and a bit mins in was ehh sounding imo. I've said this before about your stuff, its got a kinda DOOM-y vibe about it. it had a kind of pirate/adventure theme going on in the start which was cool. i much prefferd the non-sludgy parts of the bit that comes in after the 6:30 markish.
Mr_N - Lap Feel
not really my kind of thing, the effect on the guitar at the start which reocurs throughout sounds kinda cheesy, but not in a good way, and because it plays throughout, i couldnt really get behind the rest of the track :v the solo thing is cool though, if it wasnt for the backing guitar id have been more of a fan all in all, the drums were alright, both in timbre and composition
redBadger - Let's Go On A Journey!
another track with that kinda soundfont vibe going on with the strings, imo there needed to be a bit more sidechain on the kick, sounds very kinda cheesy 80's/amiga module, but it would have benefited from some better sounding instruments, they sounded like not good presets, rather than good presets if you get what i mean
killerteacup - Hopelessly Devoted to You
i like this track, im not sure how to word it, but the vocals are nice, the layering of the different vocal tracks is quite nice, and the guitar is really really chill, however despite waht you say, i feel as though some precussion, even if just some slow jazz style hats, or something subtle like that would have been good
Mine literally was as stock sound as you can get. thanks for noticing.
Skriket - Thank You For The Music
Good stuff man. I definitely can tell you've come along in your compositions from your stuff a year ago. I found the orchestration to be rather good, although the only thing I think it suffers from is how the instruments sound. Which that is just a financial thing getting better instrument samples. There are also a couple places where the piano pops out a little too much in its higher register. I got to tell you though I laughed my ass off when I heard the clapping. That was surprisingly charming.
Rich209 - Smudged Lines
Obviously I'm biased, so I'm not reviewing myself.
Hakita - Every Star In The Sky Is My Enemy
Hakita your stuff always gives me mix feelings. From a technical stand point you are a great composer. You have a good ear for what sounds good and almost always orchestrate it well. I know some people don't like your instrument samples, but I think that is part of your charm. My only real complaint with this piece is that its predictable. By the time I got halfway through I knew every trick you were going to pull. So I got to the point that I was no longer surprised. Things just started to drag for me. There is a few sections that I just felt like were filler for better things to come. Now with that said, and like other people have stated about soundtracks, if this was paired up with some metal RPG then that wouldn't be a complaint at all for me. But regardless of that complaint you should be proud of your work. Its good!
Mr_N - Lap Feel
You sir definitely have a Pink Floyd feel to your piece. I like it. I can actually see myself listening to this in a bar. I'm focusing on conversation, but subconsciously thinking about what I'm hearing. Or driving down the road late at night. I honestly don't have any criticism, its good.
redBadger - Let's Go On A Journey!
I thought the ending was cute! Not my favorite of your work, but it was nice. I did not like the fourth chord in your progression it sounded eh, meh, I don't know. It was weird, not bad, it just felt to me like the progression should of went somewhere else and I guess not back to the I chord? Anyways good job.
killerteacup - Hopelessly Devoted to You
This is sooooo good. I wish you weren't located in Australia as I totally go see your group play if you were playing near by. Like Mr. N I don't have any complaints, good stuff.

All the better! First of I'd like to thank you so much for not only listening but taking the time and writing down your thoughts, I know at least for me they're very much appreciated :)
I definietly agree with you on the snare, I had a really hard time deciding what I wanted to do with the drums or how to make them sound so I just went with what I know how to do well and that just happens to be dnb-ish drums.
I also can agree with you sort of on the drums, I found it so hard to properly balance all the instruments since the whole track is in a weird spot. It isn't quite soundtrack but not quite an "actual" track. Glad I made you smile with the outro, I've long thought about having people cheering on a track and this one was just too good to not have it on :)
Thank you so much for listening, I'm glad you seemed to enjoy the track!

I would love to hear you talk a bit about your own track, I always take the time to give some background to my own track and some thoughts about it on these collab albums and it would be really cool to hear what you have to say about your particular track.
I'm planning on getting better samples in the future, making orchestral tracks are just so goddamn fun since you can really work with melodies and counter-melodies, and the various instruments just sound so nice too so it is always a real treat to write pseudo-classical music :)
Alright, so we're waiting for Hakita, Mr_N, redBadger and killerteacup to write us a feedback

We're at 200 plays too by the way, no downloads though.

Join up to our gi. Room thread, post your stuff there and when we decide to do another collab album, you can submit :)
by the way, the bandcamp title for the album is wrong, it should be XII, not VII
Sorry I forgot that was a rule. Going to give them another listen and will post

Skriket - Piano is a bit bright for me, kick out the highs a bit more, but as a whole the composition and chords you're using are very nice. Drums are A+. Strings are a bit iffy though.
Rich209 - I'm always envious of your work, and this piece isn't any different. You've got most everything right here again. My only complaints would be that it's a bit bassey when the lower percussions voices come in. I would have liked a better climax and ending with more of an epic orchestral vibe but that's just me. GOod work.
Hakita - I like the idea of the song. The string sounds you're using don't quite match the quality of the rest of the song. Also it may be just me but it sounds like its clipping bad, or at least its the way you're compressing it. The song is a great composition, but you're sounds aren't entirely on point and it's way too loud. Everything is in your face and the mix isn't entirely balanced. This has the potential to be an amazing song and sorry if I sound rash in any of this, the mix just needs a lot of work.
Mr_N - Probably my favorite of this one simply because the guitar is so nice and soothing to listen to. No complaints here but it could have been a bit longer. Maybe incorporate more instruments. I could see you going into another verse with strings backing you up.
killerteacup - Fantasic. Singer sounds really raw though, did you do any processing? I really like it. It's nothing huge, nothing in your ear, nothing boastful. It's simple and nice. You may be the same guy, but I'd love to work with you and get some good mixes out there! My doors (pm box) is always open! Otherwise good job and best wishes!
Skriket - Thank You For The Music
Very cheesy, but that's not a bad thing. Sounds like the backing track to a pop song. I don't really like how the drums are mixed, they're really quiet but at the same time very hard hitting even though they have a soft sound, it's not working for me.
Piano gets way too loud at parts, completely overpowering the rest of the music and occasionally clipping and breaking the feel of the song because of that.
Other than wonky mixing, the song is very nice, nice dynamics even for a short song and the melodies are gripping and the whole track flows nicely, not counting the piano problems.
Rich209 - Smudged Lines
This'll be my second time reviewing this song, so I won't say much, but will update on my previous opinions.
On second listening, I'm getting more into the third chord which I complained about before. It's still not ideal in my opinion, but it's no longer pulling me out of the song.
The rests with the piano sound a bit wonky to me after the middle part before the other instruments come in, it feels very jagged without the other instruments supporting the rests.
Mixing is top-notch, production is fantastic and the melodies are very good. Like I've mentioned before, it's very soundtracky, sounds extremely professional.
Hakita - Every Star in the Sky Is My Enemy
the best of the best, this song is #1 and will never be surpassed
Seriously though, I guess I'll write some stuff about my song here, since I can't really review it.
It was based on 2 ideas, making a less repetition-based, faster song, and making a metal song with orchestral backing. From what I've read in your peoples' reviews, it seems most people are not a fan of the loud, noisey in-your-face production, which I've always personally been a fan of.
The title is based on a line from the intro of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, "Are all the lights in the heavens our enemy?", since I feel Gurren Lagann perfectly embodies the high-impact high octane action vibe I was going for.
The song was written in 1 day and I'm satisfied with it, though I feel some parts might've been even better with a little tweaking.
Mr_N - Lap Feel
Oh yeah, that's some great guitar work right there. I'm really feeling the solo jam. The support is very simple, but works as intended.
The only thing I don't like is the noisey backing guitar, I feel a softer, clean guitar would've fit this song better.
Really reminds me of the music Ogre You Asshole made for a very surreal episode of Space Dandy
redBadger - Let's Go on a Journey!
I have a hard time really writing anything about this track, it's just so short nothing about it really sticks with me.
If it were a bit less... "sharp" i guess, it'd fit nicely in a soundtrack for an anime or something.
I feel the section at 0.31 could've really used some backing, but outside of that and the length I don't really have any complaints about the song.
killerteacup - Hopelessly Devoted to You
Fantastic guitar work, very simple but catchy and groovy. I like the simplicity of the song, all you really need is the guitar and vocals.
My only complaint is that the vocals sound a bit out of place for some reason, it's something about the mixing or production, maybe if they were filtered to sound a bit more like the guitar they'd fit better.
Still very nice chill track. The vocalist has a great voice, can't say much about the lyrics since I rarely pay attention to those, but none of it stuck out to me as bad or silly at least.
About the album as a whole, I'm not really sure about some of the presentation from Skeeter.
I know I'm not really in the position to complain, but there's some stuff here that bothers me.
The first and most obvious thing being that the album title is wrong on both the album cover and the bandcamp page, where it is titled as VII instead of XII.
Also, the capitalisation rules are inconsistent, "in", "for", "the" and "to" are capitalised, but "on" and "a" are not.
Also not completely sure about the order of the tracks. I admit, it's probably hard to make a various artist and various genre album flow well, but redBadger's track is put in a really weird place, I feel it would've worked better if you switched it's place around with your own track's.
Unless, of course, you just put the songs in the order you got them in, in which case it's a lucky coincidence killerteacup's track ended up being the closer of the album.
[editline]13th August 2015[/editline]
i much prefferd the non-sludgy parts of the bit that comes in after the 6:30 markish.
the sludgey parts aren't really supposed to sound good, they're there to sound really jagged and cramped, which when juxtaposed with the light section makes it sound extra groovy and flowing
Everything is in your face and the mix isn't entirely balanced. This has the potential to be an amazing song and sorry if I sound rash in any of this, the mix just needs a lot of work.
the in-your-faceyness is very much on purpose, since it's a sound i'm a fan of
never really noticed the mix being unbalanced before actually listening to it on this album, since i always listen to my music loud, which is when i don't notice stuff like that, i need to pay more attention to that, so thanks for pointing that out
also dunno why you're being so careful about criticising the song, the only way i can get better is if you tell me what's wrong
My only real complaint with this piece is that its predictable. By the time I got halfway through I knew every trick you were going to pull. So I got to the point that I was no longer surprised. Things just started to drag for me. There is a few sections that I just felt like were filler for better things to come.
i've never even thought about predictability before, but now that i look back at my stuff it tends to follow certain patterns, so thanks for pointing that out, i'll have to pay more attention to that in the future
this track was an attempt at making a less repetition-based track (which is what i usually make), so it's a shame it ended up very predictable
could you expand more on the filler aspect of your criticism?
We should consider doing "collab" when needed for samples, for the next album. If someone has a physical instrument, vst, or sample pack they're willing to offer up for use someone who needs better sounds could send them the stems, midi, or composition and get it recorded maybe? Would be nice to help each other out. I'd love to help, but I don't have anything to offer at the moment. When I get my hands on a physical synth though I'll definitely be offering up my services to FP musicians, though.
HOLY CRAP! These are still going? I need to get on the next one!
HOLY CRAP! These are still going? I need to get on the next one!
our section is dead, but now we have a thread instead: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1446264
it's probably going to be quite a while before the next one again, especially since this one had such few people, but there'll probably be a 13th collab album eventually
Skriket - Thank You For The Music
Pretty melodramatic. It sounds like it could be the soundtrack to something. The drums were pretty low in the mix, and there seemed to be some dynamics issues with the piano at times.
Rich209 - Smudged Lines
Similar thoughts as "Thank You For The Music," but the drums were better mixed. Nice work!
Hakita - Every Star In The Sky Is My Enemy
I was a little worried upon seeing the length of this song, but after listing it did not feel like 11 minutes at all! there are some pretty epic moments in this!
Mr_N - Lap Feel
This is like, groovy, man! Nice guitar work! The drums could have been a little higher in the mix.
redBadger - Let's Go on a Journey!
This is so short, and I'll be honest, but it doesn't feel finished. It seems like a good idea.
killerteacup - Hopelessly Devoted To You
VOCALS?! I really enjoyed the simplicity of this one. Excellent work!
Skriket - Thank You For The Music
Pretty cinematic - I know it's your reliance on free VSTs probably which is a plague we all suffer but what you're using unfortunately sounds pretty cheap to my ears, and I can detect problems with the mixing as well. Your orchestration is perfect though - you definitely chose the right notes.
Rich209 - Smudged Lines
This suffers from less of a cheap sounding problem - you use East West right? It pays off massively. You've always been really good at orchestral music and this is no exception - although I think it could do with more range in dynamics - soft bits need to be softer, loud bits need to be louder.
Hakita - Every Star in the Sky is my Enemy
Good stuff, I'm not a big metal fan or sludge fan or whatever, but your composition is spot on. What I think it could benefit from is some slight humanisation - every instrument is so perfectly quantized that it comes off too robotic.
Mr_N - Lap Feel
I love this - your mixing is really on point, perfect Pink Floyd style, really good soloing. I'm impressed with the hammond organ. Drums are a bit low, but that's the only criticism I really have - they need to be snappier and more present.
RedBadger - Let's Go on a Journey!
I find it ironic that you called this song 'Let's go on a Journey' when it is only 48 seconds long - nonetheless, it sounds a bit like eurotrash eiffel 65 which I actually really like so well done.
killerteacup - Hopelessly Devoted to You
This is mine so yeah
Skriket - Thank You For The Music
The piano and strings are composed beautifully. The fact that they are synthetic sounding does detract a bit from the quality, but hey what can you do. Not a big fan of the drums, might have sounded better without them. The piano melody bringing the song to a climactic close was great.
Rich209 - Smudged Lines
Great chord progression, I'm glad it didn't go in the direction it sounded like it would go after the second chord. Could've used more of a build up (bringing in more instruments, increasing the dynamics, etc.) towards the end, but great track overall. Wouldn't be out of place in a film or a commercial or something.
Hakita - Every Star in the Sky is my Enemy
I have to admit that the MIDI-ness always takes some getting used to. But usually your tracks are like musical journeys in themselves so that makes me forget about that. I liked the interplay between the heavier parts and the non-metal guitar parts, always going back to the main theme introduced at the beginning.
Mr_N - Lap Feel
I like Major 7th chords a lot!
RedBadger - Let's Go on a Journey!
Usually short tracks throw people off and make them wonder why they aren't longer, but this one seems to be the right length. Its succinctness is its best quality. It's uplifting and to the point. Well done.
killerteacup - Hopelessly Devoted to You
Your vocalist has great control over her voice. It's soothing and lovely and the vibrato is perfect. The leslie(?) effect on the guitar fits the song perfectly. However, I think I'm in the camp that thinks some light percussion (maybe some drum brushing) would be great for this song.
Sorry I forgot that was a rule. Going to give them another listen and will post

Skriket - Piano is a bit bright for me, kick out the highs a bit more, but as a whole the composition and chords you're using are very nice. Drums are A+. Strings are a bit iffy though.

Good idea on letting the kick have some of that higher click to it, listening to my track again and I can definietly hear that it needs more of that.
Skriket - Thank You For The Music
Very cheesy, but that's not a bad thing. Sounds like the backing track to a pop song. I don't really like how the drums are mixed, they're really quiet but at the same time very hard hitting even though they have a soft sound, it's not working for me.

I never thought of it like that but I agree with you wholeheartedly on the mixing on the drums, I definietly want a more soft r'n'b/pop sound to the snare in particular :)

Pretty melodramatic. It sounds like it could be the soundtrack to something. The drums were pretty low in the mix, and there seemed to be some dynamics issues with the piano at times.

Thanks for listening :) I honestly don't know where I want the drums in the mix actually, the overall concensus seems to be that the drums needs more light shining on them though so thanks for the feedback mate :)

Pretty cinematic - I know it's your reliance on free VSTs probably which is a plague we all suffer but what you're using unfortunately sounds pretty cheap to my ears, and I can detect problems with the mixing as well. Your orchestration is perfect though - you definitely chose the right notes.

Yeah I hate having to rely on free VSTs for strings, it ~can work well if the instruments are just nuances and not the centerpiece. I really want something like Kontakt or East West so I'm saving up money for that so I can actually make this track something I can release and be 100% proud of.
Really glad you seemed to enjoy the track, I think this is one of my better tracks and it brings me so much joy hearing that other people seem to like it as well :)

The piano and strings are composed beautifully. The fact that they are synthetic sounding does detract a bit from the quality, but hey what can you do. Not a big fan of the drums, might have sounded better without them. The piano melody bringing the song to a climactic close was great.

Thank you so much! As mentioned I hope to make this track more 'realistic' with some high quality samples so it makes me so glad reading comments regarding the orchestration :)
