Airsoft Paintjob: Making It look like real artificial wood.

[release] NOTICE: In this specific paint thread, I'm going to be using spray paint, becuase thats all I have. I'm not sure if other paints will yield different results (I'm sure they will) but thats for you to adventure on.
Also, I don't take responsibility for any accidents and messing ups of guns, this is all your choice and you are in complete control.
It's also expected you have basic knowledge of how to properly spray paint your guns.
This tutorial will not yield super duper amazing results, it will look real but, if you want wood GO BUY WOOD.
And last, I don't suggest doing this with really expensive guns or m4's, It looks bad on m4's and and who wants to paint over a super expensive gun right?
With that said, lets get started. [/release]
Hello! Today, We are going to be making a almost real fake looking wood effect on our plastic airsoft guns.
Your going to need a tan color, preferably, something like this:

(something of that type)
And a darker brown:

(once again, something of that type)
These are common colors and they shouldn't be hard to find at a place like wal-mart (paint section)
Now, You are going to want to prep it like you would any other paint job, strip it, tape it, and do whatever else you do to get started.
Then, get your stuff together. I strongly suggest doing it outside, and make sure it's good weather. (obvious)
WARNING BIG PICTURES ARE GOING TO COME UP EVENTUALLY.
Here's the supplies I used (minus the tape, I didn't need it)

I am using a extra piece of plastic from a broken gun for this particular tutorial.
Now, with the sandpaper, gently go back and forth to get a sanded down look: (I used 100 Grit)

Lets get started painting with out "pebble" color.

Paint it a solid light layer like you would any other gun, it dosen't have to be perfect, due to the fact we'll be scratching it up later anyway.

Once thats done, don't feel bad to sand a little. you can scuff it up a little, just not too much.
Now, Lets add some brown, do it in spots like so:

Lets keep repeating to add some tan and brown to get some awesome stuff going on, once getting something like that is done, it's time to scratch it up a little bit.
I forgot to mention this earlier, but you're going to need some sort of pebble type thing near bye, the size of the rocks dosen't really matter as long as it similar.

Now rub your gun around a little bit in there, get it nice and rough.
I couldn't get a great picture, but it should look something like this once you rough it up a bit:

Now, were going to sand paper the edges a bit to give it some black around the edges.

Now, You just have to do the finishing touches on your own, add some browns and tans, I would show you more of the touching up but I unfortunately ran out of tan :saddowns:
Make sure that you eventually start getting a orange type color when you start combining the brown and tan.

Congratulations, you're done to your liking.
[release] Afternotes:
Make sure you practice this before going at it, make sure you can confidently make something you like before attacking a rifle body or something of the sorts. The example I made dosen't really show exactly what the end result would look like, due to it being slightly rushed, but if you take your time and keep going at it, you'll get good end results.
It's a really easy process, just keep trying at it and it will look awesome.
Make sure you have about an hour to do this, it's going to take some time to do it right, unfortunately, I only had about 20 minutes.
The model in the tutorial is rushed, when you do it make sure you take your time and get some good browns in there with distinct colors. [/release]

End!
sexy

huh
Cool tutorial, the result looks pretty awesome. I wasn't all that convinced untill i saw the last picture of it, looks really convincing.

I painted it becuase It's all I had for spare parts that meet the type of plastic that I wanted to use.
Also, the painted shotgun dosen't look that good becuase I ran out of time and resources.
Looks like this'll come in handy, i'm getting an AK with wood foregrips, but a black full stock, I might as well try this out.
I have some experience with non-spray paint paintjobs. At one point, I was trying to get a kind of 'beaten up post apocalyptic' kind of look. Model paints worked extremely well for what I was trying. I painted the entire gun that style, but I lost the photos and don't have the gun anymore.
Image of the paint style on a magazine
I also tried out a arctic/urban camo type thing. Came out looking pretty good in my opinion.
Examples: 1 2
But yeah, model paints. Horrible for covering entire surfaces one color (comes out uneven looking), great for getting stuff like that. Also, if you don't like it, there's model paint remover that doesn't seem to hurt the plastic of a gun.

This is actually what I wanted originally, But I ended up somehow with my wood style.

Why would you EVER paint over an AK?!
Why would you EVER paint over a broken spring ak?!
For practice before I do it on other guns.
It's worth painting over it anyway, it looks awesome.
The stock on my Thompson is painted too

I found a guide for painting fake wood that works AMAZINGLY for AKs btw (http://www.red-alliance.net/articles/customization/furniture.html). While I like this guide alot, I feel its more applicable as a "general purpose" painting guide than for fake wood.
No offense Garb. I like you and you did an Awesome job on this guide! :)
While this is a neat technique, it doesnt really look like wood to me. It looks better for painting a light desert camo with a sexy looking amount of wear. The red-alliance guide that Felix posted looks MUCH better, no offense.
I'm going to be doing this to my black plastic AK stock.
I'm going to find Satin Pebble, and i'm buying some more "Brown Boots" paint tomorrow, all Rustoleum or Krylon, I can't remember.
Looks really fuckin' awesome! Hey, I also found some spraypaints that are made for use with doing paintjobs for weapons, real steel or not.
http://www.opsgear.com/index/page/product/product_id/1838/product_name/CAMO+Spray+Paint
Make sure to buy multiple colors of this stuff unless you're doing a one tone gun. This also prevents rusting so it may be good for that, too.
i've heard good things about aervoe paint for weapons
apparently it's got a low ir signature so it's fairly popular on real rifles
"Real steal"
Fffff
didn't notice that earlier

Man, the pricing of that spray paint is a real steal
