CORVALLIS, Oregon (CBS Seattle) – Beer is better for the brain than you might believe. A new study finds the frothy beverage can improve memory.A researcher at Oregon State Universtity points to a compound found in hops, one of the main ingredients in beer, improved cognitive function in a group of mice. The mice were given large doses of xanthohumol, a flavinoid found in hops. Flavonoids are compounds found in plants that often give them their color. Then the mice were run through a special maze to determine whether they showed signs of improved spacial memory and cognitive flexibility. “Xanthohumol can speed the metabolism, reduce fatty acids in the liver and, at least with young mice, appeared to improve their cognitive flexibility, or higher level thinking,” reported Daniel Zamzow, with the University of Wisconsin. “Unfortunately it did not reducepalmitoylation in older mice, or improve their learning or cognitive performance, at least in the amounts of the compound we gave them.” Lead study author Kathy Magnassun, a professor in the OSU Department of Biomedical Sciences, concludes the results suggest the diets of children can have an impact throughout their lives. “This flavonoid and others may have a function in the optimal ability to form memories,” Magnusson suggested. “Part of what this study seems to be suggesting is that it’s important to begin early in life to gain the full benefits of healthy nutrition.” The researchers point out that they gave the mice huge quantities of xanthohumol as dietary supplements and caution people shouldn’t start drinking lots of beer to improve their memories.
http://seattle.cbslocal.com/2014/09/30/study-main-ingredient-found-in-beer-can-help-improve-memory/
cheers to that
[t]http://i.imgur.com/w4jzfc8.png[/t] Well hello there.
college is going to increase my memory a lot!
Apparently Gin is literally alcoholic health juice.
Does this mean drinking to forget would actually improve your memory? Oh the irony.
ethanol =/= xanthohumol It'd probably be better to eat straight hops than drink beer, considering ethanol is still harmful.
Very sensationalist title, the study actually found that hops had some good chemicals in it, not beer. All the good chemicals you are ingesting are being completely offset ten times more by the alcohol drugging your brain.
Thought it was generally known for some time that having one wine or beer a day is actually working positively on your body.
We germans knew this for a very long time, which is why we declared beer as a staple food for a long time.
Thought it was generally known for some time that having one wine or beer a day is actually working positively on your body.
That's a myth. The study which concluded that was paid by the alcohol lobby and it had manipulated/misrepresented statistics.
Unless you are ingesting hops directly, forget about any benefit coming from this.
Air is good for you, Air is 78% nitrogen, let's all inject nitrogen into our bloodstream
It's good for my tastebuds and makes them happy. That's good enough for me.
one of the main ingredients in beer, improved cognitive function in a group of mice.
Science confirmed everybody get drunk!
You could always just drink the non-alcoholic beers/malt drinks which won't be as unhealthy for you (same process as making beer I believe). I usually drink malta which tastes more like a soft drink than a beer. Nothing beats a good beer in taste but you don't have to stick with alcohol for the health benefit in this case.
Lately I have been preferring Two Hearted ale which is unfiltered and unpasteurized IPA. It has a strong hop taste so maybe I am getting a slight benefit off of it. I have also heard unpasteurized beers can provide useful enzymes that aide in digestion as well (In moderation of course).
Even though it's in beer, I feel like they're trying to make beer sound healthy when beer still has other affects on the brain.
Apparently Gin is literally alcoholic health juice.
Gin is essentially juniper flavoured Vodka.
By God, I'm the healthiest person alive!
To all you neigh sayers I say HAH! I will be immortal through the power and majesty of beer! :v:

News report: everything that is good for you is bad for you, and everything that is bad for you is good for you, and so on into infinity.
A glass of beer with bratwurst, or a glass of wine with some fish or beef per week shouldn't be too bad. I don't see how people can bring themselfes to drink just plain alcohol though, it just doesn't work for me.
Apparently Gin is literally alcoholic health juice.
Gin is supposed to be good for arthritis pain management, but then again, that's true for any alcoholic beverage if you drink enough of it.:v: I'm reminded suddenly of all those old medicines that were loaded either with alcohol or drugs. Or both. Used to be they'd give it with tonic water to treat malaria. The East India Trading Company figured out that tonic was great for that. And sometimes, they'd splash some fruit juice into the tonic and throw fresh sugar in with whole cocktail just to make it taste better.
In my experience, moderate drinking is a huge boost to my well-being. A beer or two at night isn't enough for a hangover, but it makes me feel better the next day and makes my productivity go through the roof. Maybe I'm just an alcoholic but it works for me
