Up to 49 Ukrainian military personnel have been killed after pro-Russian rebels shot down a cargo plane over the airport of the eastern city of Luhansk. The defence ministry says the separatists fired on the military transport aircraft IL-76, which was carrying troops and supplies, with a large-calibre machine gun. "On the night of June 13-14, the terrorists ... fired from an anti-aircraft weapon and a large calibre machine gun, shooting down military transport aircraft ... as it was about to land," the ministry said in a statement. Military spokesman Vladislav Seleznov said it appeared 49 troops had been killed. That's so many lives to lose at once... I'm dreading what the backlash will be, people are going to want vengeance for something like this.
How the fuck are the rebels so competent and the planes so terrible No really like the rebels just keep shooting those planes/helicopters down Do they even have proper countermeasures
How the fuck are the rebels so competent and the planes so terrible No really like the rebels just keep shooting those planes/helicopters down Do they even have proper countermeasures
taking off and landing are the two most dangerous times for a plane literally there is no defense or evasion you can do. i'm glad i'm not in any country where people shoot at me anymore since that part is what scares me shitless.
How the fuck are the rebels so competent and the planes so terrible No really like the rebels just keep shooting those planes/helicopters down Do they even have proper countermeasures
It's not that hard to operate a MANPAD and it's not that easy to avoid one when you are a fat plane going for landing/old fat helicopter.
Well, I think this will only make the situation worse.
I wonder how Putin sleeps at night.
I wonder how Putin sleeps at night.
Easily, knowing Ukraine is not in NATO.
Easily, knowing Ukraine is not in NATO.
Imo that should change, and soon.
Easily, knowing Ukraine is not in NATO.
Uh, and what changes if Ukraine is in NATO?
Uh, and what changes if Ukraine is in NATO?
putin starts wetting the bed
Imo that should change, and soon.
You can't just join NATO at your convenience because you just happen to be needing help at the time. That's like crashing your car then getting insurance expecting them to pay to fix it. If Ukraine really needed help, they'd be asking for it a lot more and I'm sure they'd get a lot of help from NATO countries without joining, just probably not any troops on the ground from NATO countries. This would be especially true if Russia explicitly helped the rebels or civilians were being murdered routinely. NATO can't help every country but Ukraine is pretty close to the home of NATO. [editline]14th June 2014[/editline] What is scary is that there are pro-russia rebels fighting and murdering in Ukraine and Russia/Putin is just turning a blind eye. The Russian rebels wouldn't be fighting if they didn't think Russia wouldn't take control over Crimea/Ukraine if they did manage to occupy and secure the country.
Uh, and what changes if Ukraine is in NATO?
they get much better equipment, international aid, and access to the NATO lounge at the U.N. (i hear it has a soft-serve machine with 3! flavors) [editline]14th June 2014[/editline] all russia has to do to really de-escalate this is stop sending them weapons, and denounce all intentions to join russia
How the fuck are the rebels so competent and the planes so terrible No really like the rebels just keep shooting those planes/helicopters down Do they even have proper countermeasures
The article states high caliber machine guns and AA weapons. Planes can't use countermeasures on bullets, only evasive maneuvers. When you're landing there is zero room for evasive maneuvers due which is due to the fact you're breaking and lowering speed, you're also low altitude. So you have zero room to do shit. Its a cargo plane, not a fucking jet fighter. Plus it is a old cargo plane too, so it isn't going to be able to do as much. It really isn't a hard concept.

Are you delusional? Rebels != Russia. Jeez here we go again. And I thought Russian propoganda was well done.
I've heard rumours that this keeps happening because (ethnic) Russian Officers in the Ukrainian Army are getting their troops killed on purpose to waste Ukraine's manpower and give the separatists an advantage. I don't want to say Ukraine should do a purge of their Military Ranks but...
shooting down a landing IL-76 isn't hard, it's the warpac equivalent of a C-130, aka extremely vulnerable.
And another instance of Ukrainian piece of shit generals sending people to die. Yeah those were DNR rebels who shot the plane down. Yeah it was most likely Russia who provided the manpads. But it was some fatass general who sent these guys to the place where quite heavy AA is known to be present. They've lost four helos around those parts in three months, one had high-ranking military officer on board. And they still do that. They're completely incompetent.
Wow, that's bad. It's a pretty safe assumption that it was Russian weaponry that did it, if not Russian soldiers operating it. Killing 49 soldiers is an act of war, if Ukraine wasn't in a state of mild civil war already.
