You'll need to download the rest of Forza 5 at launch... otherwise you cant play it.
Basically, in order to have Forza 5 available at launch, Turn 10 will be pressing incomplete discs in such a way that it will have the extra month or so to keep working on the game, allowing users to immediately download the rest of the game at launch. Greenawalt likened it to a refrigerator, in that you'll have to fill it once to make it complete, at which point further updates become optional because the initial food is infinite and perpetually unspoiled. I'd like such a fridge. It's a rather clever workaround, especially because Turn 10 likely thought the always-online requirement would make the required day one DLC a non-issue.
The servers will be able to totally handle all this traffic right? ... right?
I give it a week.

No seriously, this is a fucking shitty idea.
Edit: Oh look, ZachPL disagrees with me....what a shocker.
Gran turismo is better anyways

A week before what?
They do realize what happens to steam every time a major game is released for preload right?

Sadly, a lot of places are sold out on preorders for the horrible console. I expect another Sim City Release.
This could be all right if it's only launch/early copies of the game that require the download, and later pressings have all of the content on the disc. It's better than rushing the game out the door and having a shitty, unfinished game that is claimed to be the complete game, and possibly having the rest of the content as paid DLC.
Yes, keep sinking your own boat, Microsoft.
I'd much rather they just delayed the game rather than releasing unfinished content...

GT5 has poor audio, extremely poor multiplayer, no engine swaps, poor customization and tuning, and only 20% of the cars are worth driving, however GT5's SP experience shits all over Forza.
Literally the only thing that keeps me playing GT5 is the fact that it's fucking gran turismo and that's what I grew up on for racing games.

No, no, no. This is different because it's a game/system/developer I don't like.
Forza is a really fun game but Turn 10 are a joke. Every release they add one or two poorly hacked in game types, more models and change the menu theme. They've had the same dodgy freezing piece of shit for 3 releases now and despite so many complaints made no attempt to even acknowledge the menus and loading are awfully made. I have something like 60 hours of driving and 30 hours of being in menus on that game because it constantly fucks up and I end up sitting in a menu waiting for the lobby to un-fuck itself.
Maybe they should use this extra month to completely overhaul their terrible programming instead of adding badges and medals.
Can I sue them for selling me an incomplete product?
I don't see a problem with this, it allows consumers to get the content quicker without having to wait around for content which comes at the end of the game anyway. Think of it like Half Life's episodes

No, you'll still get the content, plus they're being up front about it
Its shit like this that is making me switch from my 360 to a PS4
I think this isn't so bad. I'd rather have the game release a month early and have to wait an hour for it to update than to wait a whole month. Was there ever a Steamworks game that didn't have a day 0 patch?

Forza is hilarious with how unrealistic their modification and tuning system is. I think the best example is this car https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datsun_510
90 HP, one ton car that can be modified to over 1000 HP.

but isn't most stuff downloaded and have to be decrypted?
which is why it takes such long time

The thing is though, not everyone has super internet. A lot of places still have bandwidth caps and if the game is unfinished and you can't download it, you're fucked.

This isn't a fair comparison at all. When you bought HL2, you received all of HL2 at launch (either on disc or through Steam). The episodes are standalone games you paid for, and received, and played separately from HL2 itself.
This is a game being shipped incomplete so the developers can ship the rest when it's done. Rather than taking the sensible option of just delaying the launch of the game a few months more to actually get it working. Is the One really that desperate for launch titles than they think this is a good idea?
Gran turismo is better anyways
they're two very very different games going in two very different directions
Imagine when a retro game collector finds this and wants to play it 15-20 years from now, and they get told that they can't because the disc is missing a portion of the game data, and the servers that data's supposed to come from have been down for years.
Gran turismo is better anyways
I'll agree to make 13 agrees to 13 disagrees :v:
They are both flawed on their own things.
Gran turismo is better anyways
Depends. Forza 4 was vastly superior in almost every single way to Gran Turismo 5. The physics were much better, the costumization was better, the sound was better... Having played Gran Turismo 6's demo, the physics were massively improved so I think maybe the tables will be turned soon. And apparently GT6 will have a livery editor just like Forza's so... Fun, fun, fun.

How are they selling you an incomplete product?
they're two very very different games going in two very different directions
Not really. Forza Horizon was the one going the "casual" direction, Forza 4's tyre handling model was literally spot on. GT5's was rubbish. And let's not even get into the fact that body roll almost does not exist in GT5.
GT6, different story.
[editline]17th July 2013[/editline]
That being said, I am getting GT6 but I doubt I'll get an Xbone and Forza 5 for this simple reason: Forza will not have night racing and will not have weather effects. It's 2013.
No, no, no. This is different because it's a game/system/developer I don't like.
this is different because it's a fucking disc-based game that you also have to download not a solely digital one you fanboy

Disagree - I think GT5's car physics are infinitely superior to Forza's. Forza has always handled like crap - the steering wheel jerks and moves around in a straight line on a perfectly smooth track and the cars float over the road like the tyres are made of cardboard.
The sound is definitely better, though. GT5's cars all sounds like a chorus of middle-aged men humming.
